I wonder how you’d enforce that though. Sure, for companies that just discontinue a line of products you could force them to open up their code. But what about companies that go under and just fold? Unless someone takes the time to open it up as the company goes under, there is no forcing function that I could think of?

Maybe an escrow of sorts but that seems like a hackers wet dream for proprietary software.

‘Ecocide in Gaza’: does scale of environmental destruction amount to a war crime? (www.theguardian.com)

Exclusive: Satellite analysis revealed to the Guardian shows farms devastated and nearly half of the territory’s trees razed. Alongside mounting air and water pollution, experts says Israel’s onslaught on Gaza’s ecosystems has made the area unlivable

How should I do backups?

I have a server running Debian with 24 TB of storage. I would ideally like to back up all of it, though much of it is torrents, so only the ones with low seeders really need backed up. I know about the 321 rule but it sounds like it would be expensive. What do you do for backups? Also if anyone uses tape drives for backups I am...

cybersandwich , (edited )

I don’t have nearly that much worth backing up(5TB–and realistically only 2TB is probably critical), but I have a Synology Nas(12TB raid 1) and truenas (zfs striped/mirrored) that I back my stuff to (and they back up to each other).

Then I have a raspberry pi with a USB drive (8tb) at my parents house 4 hours away, that my Synology backs up to (over tailscale).

Oh, and I have a USB HDD(8tb) that I plug in and backup my Synology Nas to and throw in my fireproof safe. But thats a manual backup I do once every quarter or 6 months if I remember. That’s a very very last resort backup.

My offsite is at my parents.

And no, I have not tested it because I don’t know how I’m actually supposed to do that.

cybersandwich ,

I think unRAID does that. But I never looked into it much tbh.

cybersandwich ,

I heard a security researcher say something like that a couple decades ago I think. The solution isn’t to “safeguard SSN’s”, it’s to make them pointless to have. Make it so you can’t do anything with them.

Like you point out: this one breach alone could be 1/4 of the us population.

Youngkin vetoes Virginia bills mandating minimum wage increase, establishing marijuana retail sales (apnews.com)

Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed two top Democratic legislative priorities on Thursday: bills that would have allowed the recreational retail salesof marijuana to begin next year and measures mandating a minimum wage increase....

Let’s not forget his swing and miss at the capitals arena move into Alexandria.

He acted like he did a big thing for everyone, but most of the residents didn’t want it and DC just clowned him by offering a better deal.

cybersandwich ,

So it sounds like Vultr isn’t doing anything nefarious at all.

Someone apparently actually read the terms and services for the first time a few days ago and misunderstood them since they were saying it was in reference to the Vuktr website not your servers.

And either way, they removed the offended lang to clear it up.

This seems like a knee jerk mob reaction more than anything.

There is no evidence that they’ve done anything with anyone’s data.

There are a ton of negative comments on here, but i think the reality is: people value different things.

When you have certain values you will sacrifice certain things to practice those values/achieve those goals.

Some people value charity work because helping the community and people makes them feel good–even if it’s more work on their plate.

Some people sacrifice their personal lives to achieve a career goal. Sometimes that’s for financial reasons, sometimes that’s for ego reasons, sometimes it’s “meeting a challenge”.

Some people will sacrifice their career to have less stress or focus on their family. Some people value their hobbies, relationships, personal interests to the point where they’ll pick jobs that let them focus on those things–even if those jobs don’t pay as well, even if they aren’t “progressing” up the ladder.

And for what it’s worth, your values (may) shift over time. I never wanted kids for the longest time. Then I did.

I valued career progression for ego and financial reasons–and now, that’s shifted.

I sacrificed spending time with my friends when I had my kid, but now I am putting a lot of effort into those friendships because I value them and that requires work. That means I didn’t take a job offer that would have paid more, so I would have time for my family and friends.

I value those things more at this point.

I value my time playing computer games, so I sacrifice my sleep so I can do that. :)

Bloat = making your system usable

  • annoying people who whine about bloat
cybersandwich ,

You realize you don’t have to backup the actual “bloated” programs. Just maybe their configs and any files those programs generate that you’d like to keep, right?

cybersandwich ,

I actually wonder if we could ever agree on a definition?

Maybe:

Bloat: any unnecessary, superfluous software, software package, or feature that is unused or unnecessarily inefficient, and/or uses system resources to an unessasary or unreasonable degree.

What do you guys think? Because then we can still argue about bloat and what reasonable is! And that’s what it’s all about. Arguing for the sake of it!

cybersandwich ,

Is it unmaintained completely or just feature complete and not getting recent updates?

I’ve seen people say “this tool isn’t being maintained because there aren’t recent check ins” and those two things are very different.

Trial starts for Arizona border rancher charged with killing migrant on his property (apnews.com)

An Arizona rancher went on trial Friday in the fatal shooting of a migrant on his property near Mexico, with his defense attorney maintaining his innocence as the national debate over border security heats up ahead of this year’s presidential election....

cybersandwich ,

Agree, but the context does matter here. Nogales is known for cartel drug (and human) smuggling. The article says the crossers on his ranch had been getting more aggressive(allegedly) so he armed himself.

The article also mentions that he saw 5 guys with large “backpacks” and rifles. That description is very likely drug smugglers (whose “backpacks” were actually 50-75lb marijuana bundles) and not just your average migrant crossers.

They also report hearing a gun shot.

But the article is sparse on how we get from that to the rancher “shooting over (allegedly unarmed) migrants heads” with a an ak47.

Especially because the timeframe was presumably “late lunch” aka broad daylight.

I’m always wary of jumping to conclusions because these stories are usually much more involved than headlines or even articles like this tend to let on.

cybersandwich ,

People have an expectation problem.

University’s are about education not job training. If you need to understand the difference think sex education vs sex training.

Computer science, law school, and other degree fields aren’t (directly) about getting a job. It’s about giving you an education, context, and teaching you how to think and research.

It’s been distorted over the years, specifically by the last two generations whose parents basically said “you have to go to college to get a job”.

There is value to computer science education. That foundation is important to making better developers and better software.

Apex Legends streamers surprised to find aimbot and other hacks added to their PCs in the middle of major competition via anti-cheat software (www.pcgamer.com)

Wow it finally happened. So glad I switched to steam running on linux mint last week. I refused to install helldivers because it wanted to install some no holds barred god level permissions anti-cheat software. Windows 11 was the last straw for me. Good times…...

cybersandwich ,

Is there any actual evidence that this was done via an EAC exploit?

These could be two spear phished players with hacked PCs. (2 of the best and biggest audiences making them ideal targets). People have also mentioned r5 potentially being a culprit.

If this was eac related or even a bigger client side hack (RCE), you’d think it’d be more wide spread.

I wish the reporting on this was better all around. At this point I’ve seen no actual evidence of anything supporting RCE or that it was EAC to blame.

cybersandwich ,

Hal saying “I have aimbot I can’t shoot. I can’t shoot” because he’d basically mow down everyone, then when his teammates got knocked, he was like…okay nvm lemme one clip you guys.

Hilariously, there is a chance aimbot wasn’t on when he one clipped the caustic (and that it was just straight aim assist on controller).

Can you imagine if the hacker was more clever and didn’t make his cheats obvious for genburten?

Everyone was on the lookout for it the next game. But what if he just subtly did it to hal (one of the best if not the best players in the game) . It would be an even bigger fucking deal.

Accusations of cheating or aimboting already happen with pros because they are so good. Imagine having some clips of hal legit aimboting (unbeknownst to him) in a finals lobby.

cybersandwich ,

Lol wut. Why is a restaurant obligated to give you special treatment or free things? If you are allergic to peanuts are they obligated to fry their fries in a separate oil just for you??

cybersandwich ,

Lol why wouldn’t they. I would.

If I had to change my burgers and fries prices at my burger joint so they are the same price as vegan burgers and non-peanut oil, I’d just raise the prices of everything to the new floor.

Because the reality people are shitty and they are going to claim the accommodation whether they have the “disability” or not.

cybersandwich ,

The reasonable accommodation is offering non-dairy options at all even if it’s slightly more.

Pornhub shuts down in Texas... and predictably, VPNs benefit (mashable.com)

From the article: “Unsurprisingly, this skyrocketed searches for the best VPNs. According to a SlashGear report sent to Mashable, searches for “Texas VPN” jumped by 1,750 percent in the past day. It also spotted a 1,600 percent increase for the phrase “How to access Pornhub.””

cybersandwich ,

Isn’t Texas getting more and more purple? I think Biden only Lots by 5 percentage points. Lots of tech people, California emigrants, and “east coast” educated types moved to the cities there (like Austin).

Granted Texas is huge so the cities play less of a role in the overall state picture.

It might not be a swing state yet, by I don’t know that it’s as entrenched red as it used to be.

I honestly think that a lot of the bullshit about abortion is an attempt to force those blue voters out of their state because they are scared they are losing their grip.

Firefox saw an increase in users (~50% in Germany and ~30% in France) following Apple’s default browser changes in the EU, as did Brave. (www.theverge.com)

Firefox spokesperson Christopher Hilton tells The Verge that the browser has seen a more than 50 percent jump in users in Germany and a nearly 30 percent increase in France....

cybersandwich ,

I thought Firefox said that they were going to have to write two different browsers so they weren’t going to.

cybersandwich ,

Yes, because it’s a house/dwelling. Hotels that have suites aren’t allowed to have cameras in the kitchenette area or hallway of the suite. That’d be absurd. It’s still “inside” an area where you should expect privacy.

Just like it’s absurd that it’s taken this long for a policy like this.

I wonder how they’ll enforce it.

cybersandwich ,

I forgot you can Airbnb a room in someone’s house. That’s weird AF to me. Cameras in “non-room” areas, in that case, seem less privacy invasive. But that whole set up is weird.

cybersandwich ,

Breaking things is the best way to learn. Accidentally deleting your container data is one of the best ways to learn how to not do that AND learn about proper backups.

Breaking things and then trying to restore from a backup that…doesn’t work. Is a great way to learn about testing backups and/or properly configuring them.

The corrolary to this is: just do stuff. Analysis paralysis is real. You can look up a dozen “right ways” to do things and end up never starting.

My advice: just start. If you end up backing yourself into a corner where you can’t scale or easily migrate to another solution, oh well. You either learn that lesson or figure out a way to migrate. Learning all along the way.

Each failure or screw up is worth a hundred “best practice / how to articles”.

cybersandwich ,

Yep, that’s exactly what you need. It’s a right of docker passage to not have a volume set up and lose all of your settings/data.

What you are talking about is volumes. You can probably Google a dozen examples but I highly recommend trying chatgpt for questions like that.

It’s pretty good about telling you what you need to do or how to fix a issue with your compose file.

cybersandwich ,

This is probably a super sick burn in the opera community.

cybersandwich ,

This wasn’t the border patrol. It was new York police. This person was already in the country presumably released by USBP at the border.

Local police did this.

cybersandwich ,

Reallllly? Jimmy John’s is super fast and their bread tastes delicious. Jersey Mike’s tastes amazing and fresh. Subway doesn’t taste fresh. It tastes like prepackaged deli meat, old veggies, and their bread is mediocre. So as far as sandwiches go, its s pretty lackluster affair.

I’d probably say: jersey Mike’s, Jimmy John’s, then waaaaaay down I’d put subway.

Asking for a Linux (or non-Windows) laptop during a job interview?

I’m interviewing for a software dev job currently (it’s in the initial stages). If things work out, I’d absolutely prefer a work laptop with Linux installed (I personally use PopOS but any distro will do), a Mac will be second choice, but I absolutely cannot tolerate Windows, I abhor it, I hate it… (If all computers left...

cybersandwich ,

Why? Having used all three, currently using all three in some capacity…I’d put them in order of Linux, Mac, then windows. At least with Mac you have a *nix like system with things like zsh, coreutils, homebrew, and iterm2. You can even set up tiling window managers.

Not to mention they are fantastic pieces of hardware and if you are doing any dev work with AI/ml the metal cores are sweet.

cybersandwich ,

The mail is as reliable as ever. What are you talking about?

cybersandwich ,

They are trying to insure their company survival. Imagine if they didn’t put money into R&D for a car and something happened where, for example, Google produced one or EVs really took off in a big way. Or self-driving cars became a reality.

They’d be sol.

So you’ll see companies like apple, meta, etc try a lot of different things as they attempt to read the tea leaves. They are one big tech breakthrough away from being irrelevant.

I’ve been predicting for a while though that siri will be turned into an AI that runs locally using the metal cores.

I’m genuinely surprised they haven’t dropped that on us and are focused on VR.

cybersandwich ,

It has all the familiar symptoms of a big apple release in the works. Theyve been putting ML cores in chips for ages, all of their stuff now has them. They’ve been letting Siri languish for years. It’s become a running joke about how bad it’s been.

Remember when everyone was upset that they were letting the MacBook line languish and weren’t “putting effort into it anymore/don’t care about professionals”? Then they dropped the m series chip laptops, the Mac studio etc. and its balls fast with specialized Asics for video processing etc.

It feels like that pattern to me. Like that team is heads down and apples working on it. So they say very little about it in any of their briefings but the hardware is there ( which they also, weirdly haven’t been advertising as much). Seriously those ML cores outperform an old 1080ti I have in a server by orders of magnitude.

it seems like it’d go right along with their “privacy” focused branding too. And now that these other companies are doing the very public beta testing apple can tune it.

Oh and they have all of these hooks available to iOS and Mac users(Mac specifically) with their apple script stuff. Imagine Siri being able to automate a task you do by just asking her?

Anyway, could be wrong but I’d be excited to see it happen.

cybersandwich ,

Haha it took me 3 (almost 4) years to finally catch it :(

cybersandwich ,

I was proud too. I was starting to think either I was an asymptomatic carrier or I was immune unlike the rest of you peasants with weak immune systems. My wife had it and I took care of her the entire time she was sick, and I never got it.

I was in the ICU COVID wing for weeks when my dad got sick (immuno compromised lung transplant situation:( ). I still never got it.

But alas, I guess I had just been lucky. I got it after last thanksgiving. The only one in my family to. My wife and baby never got it from me either. It’s such a weird sickness in that sense.

For what it’s worth I was all vaccinated and up to date. As soon as I was able to get each round I did. I wore a mask for a little longer than most people but haven’t really worn one for a year or so? Honestly don’t remember when I stopped. I wore one again when my baby was born for a few months.
