Saying what can't be said: Israel has been defeated – a total defeat (www.haaretz.com)

We’ve lost. Truth must be told. The inability to admit it encapsulates everything you need to know about Israel’s individual and mass psychology. There’s a clear, sharp, predictable reality that we should begin to fathom, to process, to understand and to draw conclusions from for the future. It’s no fun to admit that...

Rentlar ,

The more the mouthpieces shout that “we’re winning,” the clearer it is that we’re losing. Lying is their craft. We need to get used to that. Life is less secure than before October 7. The beating we took will sting for years to come. The international ostracism won’t go away. And, of course, the dead won’t be coming back. Nor will many of the hostages.

We have to make it clearer than ever that this rightwing fantasy of subjugation of a population to genocidal conditions doesn’t fulfill any aims to stop terrorism whatsoever.

Absolutely funny move… if only Musk hadn’t cut large swaths of the team that could forsee these issues and patch them preemptively.

It doesn’t make sense to push for anyone smart but it’s the equivalent mistake as forgetting to check “Whole Word Only” on your Find and Replace function.

He Faces Execution. His Lawyers May Have Earned Less Than $4 an Hour. (www.themarshallproject.org)

After [Brian] Dorsey confessed to killing his cousins Sarah and Ben Bonnie with a shotgun in 2006, Missouri paid two lawyers $12,000 each to defend him. If they had worked 3,557 hours — the average time spent by defense lawyers in death penalty cases, according to a 2010 report commissioned by the federal courts — they would...

Most Canadian carriers do a “use your plan like you would at home” but the price for it is about USD 10 per day, which is a huge cost compared to many travel eSIMs or a local SIM/eSiM.

Rentlar ,

Yeah the EU is just awesome for being able to just hop from country to country, it’s the same with the wireless roaming as it is with your person.

Rentlar ,

In Canada the way to work around 2FA SMS is to have mobile data roaming off with roaming on, (then switch your sim card to your home number). The incoming text messages and leaving incoming calls ignored won’t charge you. It will only charge if you use any mobile data at all, send a text, SMS, MMS message, make any call (including to voicemail) or accept any call (some charge for rejecting a call but won’t if you let it timeout on its own).

I think Ontario pushed Sunday’s weather onto Quebec. In Southwest Ontario it was partly cloudy but you could see the eclipse and totality for the whole time just fine:

My mind is blown! So if I have it right, they pay to put up ads to some useless bullshit site on theirs so that they can have copious amounts of additional ads for unsuspecting visitors to view?

I feel like I’m getting something wrong here.

Rentlar ,

With a focus on flatpaks,

!linux would be fawning all over this one :]

This sounds like the first legitimate competitor to Valve’s Steam Deck that is taking the Linux software side of it seriously rather than as an afterthought.

The hall effect joysticks are a nice plus.

I’d consider buying it if I hadn’t pre-ordered the original Steam deck the first day it was offered! I’d also wait for reviews to come out on how the physical shape and control layout feels since that’s important.

Rentlar ,

Remember I’m talking about the first competitor to the Steam Deck. So I mean by this the first company other than Valve to care for Linux.

Rentlar ,

As useful as Mozilla/5.0; AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/537.3

Rentlar ,

Trick is I took out the actually useful parts like Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc. And the OS. All the agents these days have AppleWebKit and Mozilla just so old websites that look for it don’t downgrade the experience.

Rentlar ,

Yeah this isn’t my UA but I’m just saying these parts are what’s considered the supported featureset rather than information about what software the device is running.

Rentlar ,

Yeah. Ask anyone if they know the difference between the real vs. the nominal value of money. If they don’t they probably don’t realize how much they’re being screwed.

Rentlar ,

“Stop Killing Games” is precisely the action campaign that is meant to get this type of conversation into the halls of governments everywhere.

Rentlar ,

Your argument is interesting. I get that it’s upsetting that Mac isn’t well supported.

Valve isn’t obligated to continue supporting all its games and software features on Mac, especially when Apple’s reluctance to natively support Vulkan and other cross-platform technologies makes game development more complex. There’s no excuse for Steam on Mac…

You wrote the excuse/reasoning for Steam not to support Mac before saying there’s no excuse. If Apple enforces their control over their software and hardware by making everyone developing sign restrictive EULAs and dictating what technologies can run on their hardware, why does Valve have to play ball with that? Apple has had no interest in courting gamers to their platform for several years, so it is their problem why Steam has become unsupported. It seems like they even tried by converting their app to 64-bit just for Apple, then they get shut out because the architecture changes to Apple Silicon. How many hoops is Valve expected to jump through?

Epic is the company trying to be the Amazon, Walmart, etc. of the gaming industry by “disrupting” the existing ecosystem with free games every week, paying devs off for exclusivity with their fortnite cash. It’s clear as day when they take over is when they are sure to enshittify themselves.

GOG games I do support, but I’m just sad that they haven’t done much for Linux.

You didn’t mention itch.io, which has a well-functioning app (at least on Linux), and a revenue sharing model set by the developer, and a pay what you want scheme for buyers.

Israel sacks two officers after finding grave errors in strike on aid workers (www.reuters.com)

An Israeli inquiry into the killing of seven aid workers in an air strike in Gaza this week found serious errors and breaches of procedure by the military, with the result that two officers have been dismissed and senior commanders formally reprimanded....

Rentlar ,

They can say it was at night so they couldn’t read the logo or whatever. Regardless, the command structure that allowed this blindfolded and earplugged strike, where command authorities aren’t informed of the coordination between aid groups and the IDF contacts extends beyond just the people fired and reprimanded.

Their excuses for these types of mistakes indicate a structured campaign of indiscriminate murder.

Rentlar ,

spotpassarchive.github.io has instructions for 3ds and wiiu if you scroll down.

The instructions are different based on your software version and if you have CFW/softmodded your console.

Rentlar ,

He’s right, but I don’t like the framing of TV companies are going to spy on you anyway so we’re the best option since you get a free TV. I would like the option to not be spied on. In fact I’m choosing that by not having a TV to begin with.

Rentlar ,

Washington could not support the text, which she said contained “many problematic elements”, including its failure to specifically condemn Hamas and its October 7 attacks.

Damn, this is the non satirical version of this satire:

Rentlar ,

For now, yes. The patent discussed in the article suggests that the Roku TV reads the input HDMI signal even if you aren’t using a Roku App to determine whether you are idle and show ads when the screen doesn’t change much.

‘Lavender’: The AI machine directing Israel’s bombing spree in Gaza (www.972mag.com)

In 2021, a book titled “The Human-Machine Team: How to Create Synergy Between Human and Artificial Intelligence That Will Revolutionize Our World” was released in English under the pen name “Brigadier General Y.S.” In it, the author — a man who we confirmed to be the current commander of the elite Israeli intelligence...

Rentlar ,

There appear to be a number of systems here.

The previously reported AI system “The Gospel” tracked buildings that presumably had targets. “Lavender” is a newly discovered AI system that tracked people who had displayed similar characteristics as targets. This system tended to mark non-combatant civil workers for the Hamas government among other mistakes, but was understood to have a 90% accuracy rate from a manually acquired sample. The threshold for valid targets changed from day to day depending on how many targets the higher command wanted. A third system called “Where’s Daddy?” followed input targets so that they could efficiently find and kill them, along with their family, children and the other uninvolved families that happened to be there. This appears to be a matter of convenience for the IDF.

Intelligence personnel tended to just copy and paste (the 90% accurate) Lavender system output directly into the Where’s Data System. Typically the only check prior to strike authorization was whether the target was male, but this didn’t consider that the rest of the people in the target building would be mostly women and children, and in some instances the intended target had fled or avoided the area by the time the strike occurred.

The Nazi Party kept better records and had more oversight of their systematic genocide campaign 80 years ago.

US says Israel has not violated international law during Gaza war (www.aljazeera.com)

After Israel killed seven aid workers in Gaza, the US says it has not found any incidents of Israel violating international humanitarian law in the past six months. An Al Jazeera probe concluded the World Central Kitchen vehicles were deliberately hit.

Rentlar ,

You can not find evidence reliably by covering your eyes and ears.

I got a thing that said “Lootboxes!” On the bottom right. I tried ignoring it for a day but that didn’t seem to work. So, I clicked the “Didn’t ask” button. We’ll see how much Discord tries to test me before I jump ship to Matrix or Revolt.

Rentlar ,

Yeah… to me it was just another one of those UI elements (like the Nitro Menu, games, etc.) that I just don’t touch.

Sure it’s an April fools joke, but the prospect of introducing ads seem just as much an April fools as what they did.

Rentlar ,

World Central Kitchen pausing operations in Gaza was Israel’s desired outcome of this homicide.

Rentlar ,

Lol the professors should talk to all the Taro, Ichiro, Jiro and Saburos in Japan about this.

Rentlar ,

Except when the perpetrator is light skinned - then they are more careful with throwing that word around.

Rentlar ,

So tell me then, when is that ‘fine art’ sub coming to Yiffit?

Rentlar ,

Heck yeah! Keep it up Ukraine. Destroying oil facilities is in style, even if in the name of war rather than the environment.

Russia wouldn’t hesitate to take out Ukranian infrastructure used mostly by civilians anyway.

Trump is such a stand-up guy, he just needs a small loan of 175 million dollars every now and then.

Vermont advances bill requiring fossil fuel companies pay for damage caused by climate change (apnews.com)

The Vermont Legislature is advancing legislation requiring big fossil fuel companies pay a share of the damage caused by climate change after the state suffered catastrophic summer flooding and damage from other extreme weather....

Rentlar ,

We have economic and environmental models for that.

In economics these extra effects are called externalities because the price we pay for a good doesn’t reflect the true cost to society that other people have to pay due to the production of that good (healthcare, disaster insurance and management, etc.)

Here’s one report that lists methodologies of calculating true costs of pollution

Another method is assign an equivalent monetary value to what averting one death would cost, so if pollution, floods are killing X people then the monetary costs to human life are that which can be levied collectively on to oil firms.

This paper tries to calculate the global costs of extreme weather that are attributable to climate change. This is what you were asking for.

Just split up this unpaid cost to the state caused by fossil fuel firms by their annual global revenue on emissions causing products.

Rentlar OP ,

Hahaha, if you remove the stereotype and reference to China, it makes for a reasonable approximation of the visuals and sound, imagining a torrent of rice being blasted at you.

Rentlar OP ,

Makes it sound cute. Instead of watching the news, I’ll look at a little snow.

Rentlar OP ,

Essentially the TV just plays whatever data is there on that frequency band. When there is nothing on the channel, it picks up background radiation from space; cosmic gamma rays that just happened to have lengthened to the wavelengths that the TV happens to be playing on.
