I think that’s called a raspberry pie, essentially.

NotJustForMe ,

Dreh die Antenne nach links, ich krieg nur rauschen hier unten.

It would be white noise, “weißes rauschen”, but nobody ever said the “white” part.

NotJustForMe ,

It is not really an alternative. So many people here complaining about quality, and the constant desire for this not to become the new Reddit.

But that’s exactly what it needs to become. A place where mindless users can post the same silly crap every day, without getting shit for it. And without being rattled by entitled mods that feel they should be compensated for doing what they want to do.

Let communities talk and mods just be mods, not critics.

NotJustForMe ,

Possibly because many users coming to Lemmy are pissed off by something. It’s not a platform for fun users, but for grumpy old cats wanting their unachievable utopian discussion forum, where all behave the same as they do. ;)

Criticise lemmy and prepare for downvotes deluxe.

NotJustForMe ,

Are they? Do they even have a linux client yet? I’d say they are second class citizens at best.

NotJustForMe ,

Some would say that most of the spending is based on greed. Individual salaries doubled to tripled in the last decade, with their head earning three quarters of a million now.

It was a tenth 15 years ago.

They started out right, like they all do. Then personal money catches up.

NotJustForMe ,

Come on. He got 200+ vaccine shots. That in itself says he was never fine to begin with.

NotJustForMe ,

But you haven’t, have you?

NotJustForMe ,

You tell me? Why bring it up if it wouldn’t work?

NotJustForMe ,

So, not really GtaVC not really running on a router. amazingly useless, too.

NotJustForMe ,

Well, that’s why you guys are allowed to bear arms, right? In case the cops and government get all crazy? Isn’t that the whole reason for the gun thing? So, go strike. Wait for cops. If they open fire, take them down. Mobilize more people, because the military is next. See what happens. Defend your rights. Don’t just pose around with a shotgun in your truck.

NotJustForMe ,

Probably language barrier. That figure of speech is not the easiest for Germans to grasp.

The first thing coming to mind is “we tried to add a checkbox, but failed, it just wouldn’t work”

To my German mind, failing means “trying and not managing it, giving up in the end.”

Failing to so somehing by forgetting doesn’t really make sense. :) How can you fail something you’ve never attempted.

It’s just a figure of speech, I know.

Is it possible that the girls wanted to get rid of the father of their friend, spiked their own smoothies, and now an honest man is being pitchforked?

Did that man do anything else than being present? Playing with the girls? Taking part in the sleepover? Did he have the drugs on hand? Did any of the girls have access to that drug at all? Was there a grudge?

How single-sided can this reporting be?

But after reading the initial article, yeah, probably a predator. Still. A thorough investigation should take place. There are well-meaning and involved people who don’t have an interest in abuse. It’s still possible the daughter was sick of her hyper-involved dad, and planned the whole thing. :')

NotJustForMe ,

I’m not gravitating to that first at all. The other side of the story has been already told. I’m just saying what if. And things like that have happened. Why woulda nyone jump to the conclusion that it might be my first thought? It’s my last one. But one that has to be completely discussed and dismissed. Innocent until proven guilty. That article didn’t even hint at the possibility, it is an atrocity of journalism.

NotJustForMe ,

Who would downvote this? It’s true. It’s helpful. It’s free advice.

NotJustForMe ,

That would be spelling it out. For me, just saying it’s wrong, and letting someone find out why, that’s hugely more helpful than spoon-feeding Information.

NotJustForMe ,

You are right in principle. New words can pop up. Them being accepted however is not just a matter of a few people using them and saying that it is so.

It’s about usage and being accepted in larger groups or areas. Language is defined by what’s surviving a generation or two. Everything else is slang.

After twenty years on Steam, I’ve been asked three times to participate in the survey on my gaming setup, and on three occasions I played on Windows. No survey in the last five years while using Linux. :)

I’ve got it twice on my work laptop, where I used it just for the messenger, back when I ran an active community for a game.

Not sure if I want to trust that data.

NotJustForMe ,

So what, give the CEO half and pay the rest to the mods? Like 1300 bucks per year without tax and fees. What would be left? 50 bucks per month? Reddit has like 75000 moderators. Some for huge Subreddits, some for small ones. Equal pay? Or what?

Someone has to organize all that paying, many are in different countries, different tax laws. In the end, there would be like 20 bucks per month for each. You then would also require extra heavy checks for moderation quality to ensure they are worth their pay. You’d need systems to prevent abuse. If there’s money involved, people become extra greedy. Just pay some of them? Only the ones working a few hours per day? Pay per moderating action? What?

Or you just do double pay for the CEO. Seems like a no-brainer.

NotJustForMe ,

I guess I would also answer that with controversial opinion.

They don’t want a better platform. Reddit does exactly what they want it to do. To generate tons of discussions about the same things, over and over again. To generate loads of different feelings and situations. To create a very diverse pool of data.

They might have started out with a good ideology, but then success came.

I like to compare it with Quora. It could have been the best site of its kind. But it served its purpose, being a feed-bucket for an AI, and now it’s not even moderated anymore. And they did pay their users and mods, but it didn’t work out, too many tiny transactions, only like a handful of people got anything, and those abused it like crazy.

Just my take on it. Such payment models won’t work. A few giants will earn the majority, and they will cheat and fight for it, the rest will still get nothing. They could have taken three thirds of that CEO money to create a few resident jobs. But why bother, Reddit is exactly how they want it to be. Most users just don’t realize the pseudo-scam, believing it’s their favorite discussion platform that they can influence, while the creators have a content-generator with free labor in mind.

It’s okay when Disney does it. What a world. Poor AI, how are they supposed to learn if all its data is created by mentally ill and crazy people. ٩(。•́‿•̀。)۶

NotJustForMe ,

Have you read the article? It was about misrepresenting historical figures, racism was just a small part.

It was about favoring diversity, even if it’s historically inaccurate or even impossible. Something Disney is very good at.

I quit alcohol, carbohydrates, weed, porn and tobacco two and a half years ago at age 42, a few weeks after breaking my clavicle in complicated ways, and while checking for additional damage, a fatty liver was identified.

I never picked up alcohol, weed, porn and tobacco and reintegrated sugar in reasonable amounts, like at social events.

I did it cold turkey. One day to the next. It was absolute hell for three days. I was sick, had a fever and malaria like sweats. Then it was a psychological shitshow for two weeks.

I was overweight, so I fasted completely for six days to withstand any temptations. Only had salt and water / electrolytes. After six days I had eggs and sardines for two weeks or so. Didn’t poop for almost a month, even had a colonoscopy to check. Everything was fine. Just adapting.

Then I did keto for a few months, found that to be too complicated, and then went carnivore with social-event exceptions, and never looked back. Keto was fine, but being a carnivore changed everything. All my little ailments went away. Skin issues, scalp issues, rashes, moodiness, sleepiness, urges and cravings, all of it.

Lost 12 kg in those first two weeks, barely slept, but was energetic like hell, only skipped work when having the fever and sweats.

Two weeks of hell, half a year of experiments and two years of a new life. It is like being 20 years younger. I haven’t been sick or ill since, either.

Good luck to you.

NotJustForMe ,

For me, it was the plants and the fiber. They made me groggy, sleepy, and constipated. The word antinutrients is slowly becoming an item; And for me, it’s true. Without them, I instantly felt better, stronger. And I had a much bigger will to live.

Keto to carnivore was as big a difference as standard diet to keto.

I would call it keto on easy mode.

NotJustForMe ,

Vaping is mostly illegal because tobacco companies have to switch. They have a lot of production facilities. Those need to be tuned down, closed or converted. That would cost them a lot of money. So it’s best to slow that down with laws.

Tobacco companies make the laws. If anything related to them is outlawed or regulated or taxed, it is because they want it that way.

Things that are outlawed become regulated. Things that are regulated can be made expensive. It takes money to compete in a regulated market. It’s a long-game. And tobacco knows how to play a long-game.

My guess: They’ll wait until more small companies pop up, then buy them all, and then kill tobacco, which is much less profitable than producing vape stuff. And then they’ll triple the price.

NotJustForMe ,

They are educated more. The opposite of enlightenment.

NotJustForMe ,

Why the downvoting?

People of today know a lot about everything. Yet we still have wars, pointless diseases born out of ignorance, discrimination beyond belief, causing people to even want to undergo surgery to escape, so much hate.

We know so many things, and we ignore it all. The opposite of enlightenment. We live in ignorance. And we celebrate ignorance.

Healthy at any weight, right? Fuck evidence to the contrary.

NotJustForMe ,

What do you mean, the same group of people? You take the vaccine once, usually when you are a child. So if you got it for your kid, and they decided you are an archaic, brainwashed fool and didn’t get it for theirs, there you go.

'Disenfranchised' millennials feel 'locked out' of the housing market and it taints every part of economic life, top economist Mark Zandi says (fortune.com)

Few milestones in life mean as much to the American Dream as owning a home. And millennials have encountered the kind of trouble totally befitting their generation, which largely graduated into the teeth of the disastrous post-2008 job market. Just as they entered peak homebuying and household formation age, housing...

NotJustForMe ,

Heh, my wife makes more working for big tech one day per week from home, than i do working full time for service work at a hospital. It’s a shitshow.

NotJustForMe ,

Kinda like an immediate moron-indicator. Whenever a new neighbor moves in, or an existing one buys an SUV, we know not to interact with them. Saves time. Same with looking for work. If the boss drives an SUV, just move on. I love moron-indicators, but I prefer smaller ones.

What do people like about them? I get Americans. They have big roads and lots of space. Here in Europe, you have trouble parking a SMART.

NotJustForMe ,

And having it being used by one person without any gear or load at all for 98% of the time.

NotJustForMe ,

It’s the “they don’t even think about it” part that makes me feel this way.

With cars, it just leads to wasted space and resources.

Working in a hospital, that same thinking leads to Dialysis, Metabolic Disease and amputations. I see it multiple times per day.

Often intelligent people, but acting moronic. Not using their intelligence. That’s quite apparent in SUVs. They cost a fortune, so it’s usually not stupidity. It’s just them being mindless. And without a second thought about others.

I stand by my choice of words.

Sometimes, yeah, an SUV makes sense. Then again, driving it into a congested city, that doesn’t make sense.

If I saw someone driving it through a mountainous region, I wouldn’t say anything. That’s fine. :)

Do you all have any tips on activities to do yourself, instead of consuming content all the time?

I’m pretty sick of my content addiction, like watching youtube or netflix all the time. I would rather be spending my time otherwise so figured fun things are the best to start. Do you have tips for fun things to do? Or how I could search for them?...

NotJustForMe ,

One could argue that a boring life is the best one could wish for. Perfect time to make some kids. That’s natures way to cope with that situation. :)

NotJustForMe ,

Making new humans is the worst advice in the history of mankind?

Having a life with a level of security that enables you to be bored, Having actual time to care for your kid.

Yeah, sounds like a terrible plan. You might end up being a responsible parent.

Are you confusing being bored with having no life? Is learning how to knit better for mankind than learning how to raise a kid?

How is it the worst advice in the history of mankind?

NotJustForMe ,

I’m pretty sure humanity would die out that way. Inspired to raise one? For most people, it just happens. I’d go so far and say that half of all pregnancies are unplanned. Inspired. What world are you living in? Sounds like a very entitled one.

If you have the means to raise a kid, you should. That’s the whole purpose of your body. Seriously. The meaning of life.

You’ve been brainwashed for too long if you think that a kid could be a burden. Especially if you have time to be bored. That’s the reason you are bored in the first place: you are not fulfilling your only true purpose.

What has society done to you that you believe reaching level 140 on mage or knitting a hat is worth more than raising a kid?

NotJustForMe ,

Fair enough.

Not smoking though. Working in a Hospital, child care, amongst other areas. Bored parents are the best.;)

NotJustForMe ,

In the end, how is that different from not praising all the library coders and open source parts?

Praise goes to the marketing guys. And rightly so. Without them, nobody of consequence would buy or use the code. ;)

NotJustForMe ,

I have never heard of alt+left, and I’ve been using the Internet since Mosaic was all the rage. Shame on me, it seems to be implemented in all browsers. How could I have missed it?

NotJustForMe ,

You do get searchable auto-transcripts of videos now, so that’s a good thing. Some people work better with videos and find them more accessible. Best of both worlds. As long as they are not auto-playing and pre-caching, I’m fine with them existing.

NotJustForMe ,

“Put that fork down. You can do it. The urge will go away in 30 minutes. Be strong. Wait a while. Eat an egg. Wait a while longer. Be strong. You are doing it. Love yourself being strong.”

NotJustForMe ,

The poor should be the standard metric.

How to make the world work with the least amount of employment imaginable.

NotJustForMe ,

Seems like I’ve responded to the wrong comment. It was about the musk one.

NotJustForMe ,

He’s got weight problems. Despite being intelligent and having every single option available to him, he’s too stupid to eat. There simply is no excuse for that. And instead of learning how to properly feed himself, he’s trying drugs to suppress appetite. Which, again, wouldn’t be an issue with proper feeding. I wouldn’t follow that man anywhere. He’s got some grand ideas, but can’t even manage the absolute basics. A trend these days.

Why would I trust anyone who can’t even manage their own body?

NotJustForMe ,

It’s the most elemental one for me. Shows that he’s short-sighted, prone to take shortcuts and willing to ignore consequences. Doesn’t even care about himself. A genuius, perhaps. But a feeble-minded one.

NotJustForMe ,

Not what I said at all. Knowing about the basis of our attitudes doesn’t change them. Hence, getting rid of the discipline would change nothing.

Of course, it’s interesting. Ancient humans are fascinating. So are pyramids. Finding out how they were built would change nothing though. Egyptology is in the same ballpark. Interesting, yes.

Fundamentally changing? Not at all. We could find out that it was ancient aliens, and it wouldn’t change a single thing today. Another discipline that could just vanish, and nothing would change for anyone except the people currently involved with them. Deep space sciences is another field.

There are many deeply interesting and fascinating fields of research and science that are completely irrelevant. At least in any practical sense.

NotJustForMe ,

What you are saying sounds romantic and all. I’d love to hear a single instance of any such example of earth-shattering discoveries that actually changed something in our daily lives.

I actually don’t believe that ancient Mars aliens would change a single thing. The big players want to go there in hopes of finding weapons. After not finding them, we’ll stop going there. No bases or colonies. We could have been on the moon, but there’s no profit to be made. So we aren’t.

I have no soul. That’s great. That’s why I ditched my work as a developer to work in a hospital to help people reduce their suffering. I thought for a long time that progress and science will save humanity. It has the potential. But romanticizing potential won’t save anyone. Most menial jobs create suffering elsewhere, all to elevate one’s personal status. Fantastic.

I am now convinced that it will be done by actually helping humans, saving the world, that is. Not having a soul feels great.

And I don’t even have to degrade others to make a point. So enjoy your hobbies, enjoy your life. And continue to accept suffering and pain while seeking answers in the past, or by playing online games from the safety of your couch. That’s fine. Just be aware that you do.

Morals are made up things, so are ethics and standards. It keeps most people from killing each other, at least. I’m texting and chatting online. Also, a waste of time and effort. We all need some distractions.

We could also use some more dullness and focus. At least until we don’t have a billion people starving for food and water, half a billion waging war, and two billion facing obesity and metabolic disease resulting from not so dull lives. But that’s my standard. That’s just the ones that are immediately suffering. Right now.

If soul is responsible for all that ignorant bliss and suffering, you can keep it. But feel free to enjoy it. I can’t. But that’s just me.

You might be confusing soul and ego though.
