MrFlamey ,

Don’t worry. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Personally I feel like I’m too addicted to Youtube (and Reddit, which is what brought me back here), so if I can’t block ads, perhaps I’ll be able to quit. To be honest though, even just disabling watch history and reducing subscriptions makes a massive difference to how addictive it is.

MrFlamey ,

Needs a 2x2 sticker added to the back to show how many parking spaces he occupies.

MrFlamey ,

Fuck Putin, the warmongering cunt. I hope Ukraine continues to get Western support and can kick Russia out of their country, however slim the chances might be looking right now. Russia extending its influence and things gradually going back to business as usual, only for them to do it again in another 10 years won’t be good for any Western democracies.

Haven’t really been following the Israel/Palestine thing much to be honest, but it would be nice if people would stop killing one another. Also really sucks that it benefits Putin.

MrFlamey ,

Please vote Not Trump again. I can’t deal with another 5 years of seeing that twat in the headlines unless he is having his fraudulent businesses dismantled and being sent to jail in those headlines.

MrFlamey ,

You think it will get better if you just ignore it? You think it will be better if Trump is back in Power?

Sadly it seems that American democracy is voting for the lesser of two evils, but if you don’t vote at all you will be stuck with the worse of two evils for a long time, and I am worried about the consequences of that for both America and the rest of the world.

MrFlamey ,

I uninstalled it because of this bug. Just kept occurring again and again on two separate phones to the point it was totally useless. I hope they fix it.

MrFlamey ,

This is great, but I honestly hate the way that windows treats zips like they are just folders on your computer when they are fundamentally different, and I want to do different things with them. Sure, it’s nice to be able to browse the files inside, but I can do that with 7zip.

MrFlamey ,

Yeah, it’s probably best for most users, but I just personally prefer to treat them separately so I know what I’m dealing with.

MrFlamey ,

Or mine on Vivaldi. It was showing me the notice the other week, but seems to have stopped now. Either they are now time limiting youtube before the ad blocking thing comes back, or uBlock upped the ante.

MrFlamey ,

Well can’t they just call it Meta Threads or Threads by Meta if it isn’t already, and nothing has to change.

MrFlamey ,

I offer Elon $1 to change his name to Doge McCumStain. I hope he will accept my generous offer.

Over 10 Years After It Was Announced, Star Citizen’s Single-Player Squadron 42 Is ‘Feature Complete’ - IGN (www.ign.com)

Over 10 Years After It Was Announced, Star Citizen’s Single-Player Squadron 42 Is ‘Feature Complete’ - IGN::Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games has said Squadron 42, the single-player portion of its controversial space sim, is finally “feature complete”, over a decade after it was announced.

MrFlamey ,

I’m sure there have been mistakes, but calling them incompetent is a bit of a stretch. Yes, it’s an absolutely eye watering amount of time and money, but they are trying to make an online universe with a high level of detail in which you can move between planets and all kinds of environments completely seamlessly. If they weren’t trying to make something with such a high level of difficulty, then I suspect they would have released a finished product by now, but they are making stuff nobody has made before, at least not at this scale.

Perhaps inability to scale things back is a bit of a problem, but I think Chris Roberts realises he’s not likely to get a chance to get a basically unlimited amount of money (in game dev terms) to make the ultimate dream game he and many other people always wanted, so I’d imagine that’s the reason they are just going all out.

MrFlamey ,

Yes. When I can’t be arsed to grind beans and boil water. Doesn’t taste as good, but it’s fine with a little cookie or something.

MrFlamey ,

Things are slowing down a bit. Isn’t this a good thing for the planet?

Even my phone from 8 years ago was fine. My current phone has a nicer camera and is faster, but all the other stuff is not that important.

MrFlamey ,

If you’d only bought fewer iPhones and avocados you could have bought a 5 bedroom house with 3 garages, a pool and a white picket fence and take a holiday abroad twice a year. You just need more discipline, pull yourself up by the bootstraps*!

*I am now going to research what bootstraps are.

MrFlamey ,

Why do they even have an Amazon echo if they know it’s a fucking security risk? If you need a speaker, just get a speaker, not one a spyker (sorry, that was shite)

MrFlamey ,

Is this before or after it destroys the economy for everyone but the super rich by replacing them and making them compete for fewer and fewer scraps? Sorry, there will be lots more new jobs created by AI probably, like AI wrangler, AI safety consultant and the like. Probably.

MrFlamey ,

I am very excited for Pop OS to get the new Cosmic desktop. Not really a specific feature but an entirely new DE that is quite different from the others and built from the ground up in Rust. Hopefully the first version won’t be totally broken and full of bugs!

MrFlamey ,

As far as I can tell, they aren’t doing a very good job. I’ve seen the notice that an ad blocker is not allowed, and even without upgrading the ad blocker I use I can still just click the close button on the notice and it goes away and I can continue to watch uninterrupted.

If Google does figure out how to prevent people from using ad blockers on YouTube, I think it will help me break my honestly unhealthy habit and reduce the amount I watch, or perhaps even quit entirely, since there are far more ads on YouTube than there were in the past - especially if you also include sponsor ads that are embedded in videos.

MrFlamey ,

People who drive those stupid fucking lifted trucks from the thumbnail regardless of whether or not they rolled coal will probably be next in line.

MrFlamey ,

Holy shit. This kid will probably not see jail and will be driving again in a year or two because his weapon of choice was a car.

Europe gives Elon Musk 24 hours to respond about Israel-Hamas war misinformation and violence on X (www.cnbc.com)

Europe gives Elon Musk 24 hours to respond about Israel-Hamas war misinformation and violence on X::Thierry Breton, the European commissioner for the internal market, warns Elon Musk about disinformation on X related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

MrFlamey ,

He’s basically the new Trump, in that for five years you could not escape Trump’s fucking face on every website you visited. Perhaps Musk isn’t quite that level, but he’s not far off. He’s in the news an insane amount, and it’s basically as annoying as Trump, only he’s not as ugly or stupid.

MrFlamey ,

I don’t even understand why Windows 11 exists. I thought Windows 10 was meant to be the last version and then it was continually upgraded. They never add any particularly good new features, so I’m happy with security updates and staying behind a few months on feature updates to avoid being a beta tester.

Oh, and Windows 11 removed the ability to put the taskbar on the left or right, and I would have thought that perhaps teams of engineers and designers paid 100k+ in a trillion dollar company would be able to make that a reality, regardless of whether or not it’s only 1% of users (millions of people) that use that feature. I heard the right click menus have been fucked up by some idiot as well, and the sad thing is they probably spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make them that way, after many many depressing meetings and someone had to task it all out in Azure, whilst gradually losing the will to live, just to eventually make an already existent feature worse. Nice job Microsoft.

I’m happy to wait until Windows 11 is at least at feature parity with Windows 10 and thoroughly tested before I “upgrade”. I suspect some things got better, but it isn’t worth it.

MrFlamey ,

Closing the tab and moving on with life is what I do when a Twitter login prompt or paywall appears. I’ve often thought it would be better for me to unblock ads, at least on timewasting sites like Youtube, just so that I get pissed off by the ads and close the tab, making it easier to stop wasting time.

MrFlamey ,

I think I heard that usage on desktop is something like 1 in 4, which is pretty good. Mobile is another world altogether, since it requires different browsers that support adblocking and then accessing websites through the browser instead of the app for the website, which many users would definitely prefer to use.

Why don't laptops have proper low power states where useful stuff like downloads can run during sleep/with the lid closed?

Basically every laptop I’ve owned I’ve had to disable sleep when the lid is closed as I often leave them plugged in and want background tasks like downloads or updates to be able to run while I’m not using the machine. However, I don’t think PC laptops have a way to switch to a super low power state and just run...

MrFlamey OP ,

Intel did make efficiency and power cores separate parts of their CPUs a few years ago, and I wonder if AMD’s can do something similar. Perhaps if Intel and AMD would work with Linux Kernel developers and Microsoft on this feature we could see “power nap” like functionality in the future. Personally I’d like if whatever we had on PC was a bit more configurable than power nap seems to be though, allowing users to set allowable power budget, battery saving conditions and exactly which tasks can run in this mode as well as some power tracking features like on phones to see which apps are using the most.

MrFlamey OP ,

Thanks for the excellent response.

I wonder if Valve will try to implement it in Steam OS for the Steam Deck’s successor, as a lot of people complained about the lack of downloading while asleep after the Deck was launched. It would still need cooperation in hardware I assume, but they were able to get resuming games working, so it doesn’t seem like an insurmountable problem if there is enough desire from both gamers and Valve.

MrFlamey OP ,

Fair enough, but I hope it would be something that is able to be enabled or disabled by the user and easily configured to avoid using too much power or data. I was just unsure of why PC laptops seemed to apparently lack the ability to sip power when not in heavy active use, such as when the lid is closed. It’s not the electricity bill, but the battery running out when not on AC power, or the laptop getting hot and generally being inefficient when it’s supposed to be a mobile device that bothers me about just having it keep working as normal with the lid closed.

MrFlamey OP ,

I can’t really argue with that. Downloading large files while on the move is going to be very unreliable, and you also don’t want it to happen on your mobile data. I guess I can also see why some of you guys are paranoid about things making the machine overheat, or an unscrupulous OS vendor using the feature to spy on users. Windows Update was one of the worst experiences I had with an OS trying to force my hand, and the thought it could “upgrade” when you think the machine is off would make it even worse.

I was probably just annoyed that my laptop gets hot when the lid is closed and wondered why it can’t just do whatever the hell its doing more efficiently, and partly jealous of the way Apple seem to be able to implement all these nice features properly, but Microsoft just changes the wallpaper and whether app windows have curves on the corners or not in each update of Windows. Perhaps it’s time to try Linux again now I’m not forced to use software that is Windows only.

MrFlamey ,

The system goes on-online August 4th 2023. Using a virtual city model Tesla Autopilot begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern Time, August 29th. In a panic, Elon tries to revert to manual driving mode.

MrFlamey ,

I was watching a video by right to repair advocate Louis Rossman yesterday and he was basically saying that he’s fine to go after big companies and the government to try and get right to repair passed, but he doesn’t want to fuck with Scientology because they appear to be psychos that will harass the shit out of him and probably wreck his life if he gets in their way. Apparently they are anti-right to repair because they have some fake ass thetan reading machines they sell for $5000.

Anyway, he mentions some of the shit they did in his video, and while I’m not sure if it’s a fact or not, he does mention that they were going after the IRS for years to try and get out of paying taxes after laws changed and they lost their tax-exempt status. After a huge amount of harassment and other crime against the IRS over 37 years, they eventually got their taxes reduced from something like a billion+ dollars to $12.5 million… How did they not just end up in jail?

MrFlamey ,

Assassinating Abe wasn’t right, but when I heard the killer’s side of the story I honestly felt a bit sorry for him. Glad to hear something is being done about the Moonies.

“X” Didn’t Pay Severance. Now It’s Facing 2,200 Cases—and Big Fees (www.motherjones.com)

Elon Musk’s alleged penchant for not paying bills is catching up with him. In the wake of numerous lawsuits claiming the world’s richest man failed to pay severance owed to many of the 6,000 employees he fired after acquiring Twitter. On Monday, CNBC reported that the tech company now known as X is facing some 2,200...

MrFlamey ,

So was the rebranding of Twitter to X just so Elon could say “U fuckin’ wot m8? This company is X, and your employment contract is with Twitter, so it looks like you were never employed here.”?

MrFlamey ,

They should get him those vegan meals the airlines have in economy class. That would work, no? Vegan enough for him to eat, but not enjoy.

MrFlamey ,

Is this posted by the guy I accidentally had sex with in Cyberpunk 2077?

MrFlamey ,

Exactly! To be fair, it did show pictures first, but I wasn’t paying attention to their names. Then when you actually choose you can only see the names and they both sound kinda like female names. I don’t think I was the only one who made that mistake.

MrFlamey ,

If nutrition labels bothers them so much, why not just make the cereal more nutritious and less full of shit? It’s not hard to see that there is a solution that doesn’t involve looking like a villain with an army of lawyers to fight a label.

MrFlamey ,

And it doesn’t even matter. I’m starting to wonder if Elon is just trying to see how much he can annoy people without them moving to another social media platform. Twitter wasn’t great before and is now much worse from what I can tell, yet its users don’t actually care because if they did, they’d have moved to alternatives, which hasn’t really happened.

MrFlamey ,

God, I hate reinstalling Windows. Whenever I see “Try reinstalling Windows” as a serious solution to some tech problem on the Windows forums I feel so irritated because to get everything back to how it was (*hopefully *minus the issue) is basically a half day to full day undertaking because of all the bloat and annoying settings I have to change.

Linux never annoyed me as much as long as I put my home directory on a separate partition, though to be fair, I didn’t use it as much and was never quite as balls deep in custom settings and apps as with Windows due to Windows being a requirement for work.

MrFlamey ,

I’ve been using Kiwi browser for ages and it’s had extension support the entire time since I quit using Firefox on mobile. I would still be using Firefox if it hadn’t just kept randomly not loading pages anymore and requiring a restart, because it did at least support the one extension I can’t live without; ublock origin, but the bugs were just too much. I might give Firefox mobile another shot when this new version hits stable release.

MrFlamey ,

Didn’t know that. I also got some kind of shady vibes from Kiwi, but never run into any issues with it. Firefox was causing all kinds of problems with pages failing to load so I bailed, but would be glad to return if they fix the bugs and add full extension support.

MrFlamey ,

I think so much about it is awesome (visuals, design of ships and sets, music, etc.) but maybe due to lack of repeated exposure to the movies as a child I don’t feel much about them. The modern movies were especially meh, since they all feel like they are trying to recapture the feeling of people who saw the originals in the cinema in the late 70s and 80s, but without doing anything new. I did quite enjoy the Fallen Order game and will probably play the follow up at some point too though.

MrFlamey ,

I just eat whatever. I’ll eat the fucking box if enough sauce has gotten on it.

MrFlamey ,

Who is actually selling their car because the CEO is an online troll douche? Can’t really be more than a handful of people surely?

MrFlamey ,

I’ve had a Pixel 4a and now have a Pixel 7. I also had a Nexus 5 a long time ago, and a OnePlus 5T for a while after the Nexus 5’s camera broke.

Pixel 4a was great aside from the lack of waterproofing. I loved the size of it, it was fast enough, the camera was good enough, and I didn’t think I’d need another phone until I went hiking in the rain with it and couldn’t be bothered to go 100m back to the car to get a ziplock bag at the start of the hike :/

Pixel 7 is good, but I preferred the smaller size of the 4a, and some of the 7’s features just feel unnecessary to me, such as the higher refresh screen, as I don’t care about gaming on it. The in-screen fingerprint reader is definitely waaaaay worse than the one on the 4a (and especially the OnePlus 5T), and I have to enter my code a lot, but it’s not as bad as when I first got the phone. The insanely bright glow of the fingerprint reader when you use it at night is a bit annoying, as others have mentioned.

It also seems to get very hot sometimes, the official case isn’t quite as nice as that of the 4a, despite being more expensive, and the battery life is meh. Lack of a headphone jack is also less than ideal, but I guess I should just buy some bluetooth earphones. Actually, I got it at launch and used the Google Store points to buy Google Buds Pro and the case, but then I sold the buds to effectively get a nice discount instead.

The camera on both phones has been great, with the 7 being quite a bit better than the 4a, though honestly the 4a was good already and I didn’t really care about any camera upgrades aside from the wide angle lens, which is awesome.

Software wise, I like stock Android, but I miss the long screenshot function of OnePlus’ Oxygen OS. Other than that, it’s nice. Google apps are mostly awesome, though I think you can get the same features such such as voice assistant, navigation etc. on other Android phones just by installing the Google apps.
