Society failed this boy. More spending on medical research, and care could have prevented this event. But instead we spend way more money on killing more people in other countries. And the medical research could help those who serve in the military as well. But no, must cut those costs as much as posdible.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

I think everyone else had that covered.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Your description of US embassies sounds more based on movies than anything else. In Benghazi the ambassador was killed by supposedly an angry mob. Nothing much was ever done about it. Those places are not heavily stocked with weapons and ammo. They are meant to be evacuated, not defended. And in the case of Haiti, what are they going to do after the fact. These are gangs, they would have to take over and occupy the whole country to do much.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Benghazi was not in a safe country. They were likely armed roughly the same. But the point is the US didn’t do anything after the fact either. So these gangs have no reason to steer clear.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

This is a super good point. When my daughter went to 6th grade the girls towered over the boys by more than a foot in many cases. The boys looked so little.

The job applicants shut out by AI: ‘The interviewer sounded like Siri’ (www.theguardian.com)

When Ty landed an introductory phone interview with a finance and banking company last month, they assumed it would be a quick chat with a recruiter. And when they got on the phone, Ty assumed the recruiter, who introduced herself as Jaime, was human. But things got robotic....

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Until the applicants use AI to handle that part… lol.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Like others are saying, it is a new york thing. But in general, upstate means further from the city than where the speaker lives. Until you crouse some imaginary line, then downstate means closer to the city. Comonly, but not always, it is used in a derogatory sense. They city people think the upstaters are rural hicks. And the upstaters think the city people couldn’t survive outside a city. Source, I grew up in an area that didn’t consider itself upstate, but all the city people sure did.

If you were asked that on family fued, the top answer would be satan for sure. Though I like the other persons answer of humanity too.

You forget, the lawyers get $999,999,997. So the passengers actually each get a dollar.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Yeah, connecting to open networks seems questionable. If it gets infected and you later connect it to your network, they are clearly at fault. So I doubt they do this.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

They already make money on the ads, and of course you have to make an account, so they sell your info… and then they fire the journalists… I would pay for a good source of real new that didn’t have ads and didn’t sell my info. But they don’t exist.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

The person probably didn’t read the article, and you did. You can enlighten them politely.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

The problem is multiplied by the fact that the people who are supposed to figure out how to be efficient with the money are either elected or paid way below market rate. So either way, they don’t have the skills for it.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

If more countries treated obesity as the disease it is, we might learn the real causes, and maybe have some effective treatments. All the noninvasive treatments don’t work long term for the vast majority from what I have read.

On the less proven track, there are hypotheses that obesity may be driven by bacteria that colinize the gut and impact brain function to train a person to be addicted to certain foods. Still far from proven, but if the funding was there we might know one way or the other.

What if a meteor hit us now? What happens after that?

Not one big enough to cause another great extinction, but small enough to just turn a whole small country and parts of neighboring ones into a huge crater. Will the people who was evacuated out after NASA stated a warning try to rebuild the country after everything has settled down or do they’d become citizens of another...

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

There is a country expected to be submerged in the near future. They are trying to aquire some new space for thier country to exist. I imagine similar if there were enough survivors.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

A pool table. Kept it for a few years, then replaced it with kids. The table was way cheaper.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

It’s not really about the coding, it’s about the process of solving the problem. And ai is very far away from being able to do that. The language you learn to code in is probably not the one you will use much of you life. It will just get replaced by which ai you will use to code.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Do you even read, he agreed with you that the US doesn’t give a shit about the environment when it attacks. He just said your example sucked, pick a better one.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

I think they carry that drug that can save people from an overdose. Otherwise, really, why would he be in a hurry. An OD is just lots of paperwork. If you told me he was speeding away… I would believe it.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Bad news for ya, straterra was having shortages as well.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

And we wonder why people stick to their guns even when wrong. Thanks for helping with that.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Intentionally set up… well sort of in my opinion. All in all it is about money. Testing and what not cost a ton of money. And that would reduce what can be funneled to “other” places. It would also cost money to the people selling the crap. So that makes it politically unpopular. They don’t need a nefarious agenda to do the wrong thing, they do that naturally.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

I gotta ask, how does 1 or 2% equal genocide. If you left that word out, your points would be more meaningful. I skipped all of what you said the first time I read that word. Not really sure what caused me to give it a second look. But most people won’t. And the rest of your points are good ones.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

I wouldn’t be too concerned. 300k is not really that many compared to the size of the industry. And there is a ton of aging software that is falling apart due to a lack of investment. Like the airlines. And all the utilities that keep getting hacked. And hospitals. With governments starting to hold companies responsible for getting hacked, there will be jobs to rebuild hold software a plenty.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Yeah, or 3. Lol.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Why would you bother with a nuke? Satellites are easy pickings if you can actually hit them.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

The article clearly says the intelligence is that it is not for attacks on humans

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Gotta be cheaper ways to generate an emp than nukes.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

I dunno, what you are talking about doesn’t sound new. Just put a nuke on a regular satellite. They already fly in that space. Would it even give off enough radiation to be detected?

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Space is big though, you need to be comparatively close to the point that the diff in distance you need between a nuke and an emp device is negligible

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Not disagreeing with you there. Just saying the difference of area between an emp device and a nuke is probably negligable in space. There was a great write up on the science of this i think on wikipedia, but my search results are now flooded with all the news about russia, so I can’t find it. But I believe it basically said nukes didn’t make sense. But it could have been “traditional” nukes that didn’t make sense.

How does employing a rapist not constitute an unsafe work environment for female employees?

So I just discovered that I have been working next to the waste of oxygen that raped my best friend several years ago. I work in a manufacturing environment and I know that you can’t fire someone just for being a sex offender unless it directly interferes with work duties (in the US). But despite it being a primarily male...

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Prisons are supposed to be for rehabilitation. What you are talking about is penal colonies. If we had a working justice system, those who can’t be rehabilitated could get the death penalty. But right now it is cheaper to keep them in prison for life than fix the system. Since this guy is out, he served his sentence and is deemed rehabilitated.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Smart locks are fine. Your door isn’t particularly secure with a regular lock. If they want in enough to bring tech, they are coming in anyway.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

And the cameras don’t do much for catching either now that most criminals hide thier face. And even when you do catch a face, doesn’t do any good unless you recognize them.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Technically, some criminals will see it and pass on the house assuming there is an alarm system. The failure modes is a good point though.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

A possibly interesting read would be about aliens who bring a cure for all illness, but unknown to use it also cures people of the need to get ahead of thier fellow human at all costs. Thus they stabilize the human race which then stabilizes the planet…

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Right? Gosh forbid we stop them from tricking people into spending money they don’t have. That would be un-American.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Oooor. We already pay taxes for the roads, why is there a fuel tax at all. It’s like airline fees. They charge you up front for the flight, then have fees for all sorts of things. Only with taxes, each tax cost a significant amount to collect. One central tax for everything would save a lot of money. But of course somewhere there is a director of fuel taxes bringing home a couple hundred k a year…

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

How do you define makes more sense. Less types of tax mean less overhead. So the people get more for thier dollar. Who uses what doesn’t matter. I don’t use welfare, so should I not have to pay for it? I may not use the roads much, but the people who do are usually doing it for work, and one way or another that benefits me. So we should all just pay for everything that makes society work, and stop wasting so much on overhead.

Ticketek ‘glitch’ appears to re-sell fan’s $659 ticket for Taylor Swift concert — “They said, ‘someone else has it, we don’t know who, we can’t check or track who has your ticket’”::A Taylor Swift fan believed her VIP ticket was ‘stolen’ from her account by Ticketek after an apparent system ‘glitch’.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

You would think right? But look at airlines, they can overbook a flight, and tough luck. Rental car places can say they don’t have the car you reserved… the law is not there to protect you, it is there to protect business.

I worked at a big company, after 16 years they let me and many of my coworkers go. I ended up at a late stage start up. They were starting to become more “corporate”. Now I work at an early stage start up. They actually care. I am not sure I will ever take a job with a company that is publicly traded again.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

My main argument against this is ROI. These people provide no real value to the government. They choose to be on an extreme side in order to get elected. No one wants to harass the moderates. So let them hire thier own security to fly with them.
Also since the airport is a secured setting, their presence is unpredictable and everyone else needs a ticket, it is safe from targeted interactions with psychos. And mostly safe from unplanned as well.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

It doesn’t have to be that hard for normal paycheck people. Just set the deductions so you owe money trial by error style. As long as you get enough of a raise each year you won’t owe a penalty.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Guess they are using the alternate definition of trapped. They of course could rent the house and use the rent money to rent/buy thier new place and probably have a little profit at the same time.
