That already exists with UTC, but the fact that people don’t use it day to day speaks to how much more convenient localized times are.

MinorLaceration ,

Have you actually been in one of those Kei trucks? It’s basically a tin can on skateboard wheels. It is extremely power limited due to engine size and handles poorly due to the wheel size. I’m not saying that they should or should not be banned, but they certainly are not safer than any US vehicle made in the last 35 years.

MinorLaceration ,

You’re telling me that they’re not literally a tin can on skateboard wheels? /s Yes, of course that was hyperbole.

There are no passenger vehicles produced in the states with wheels that size. Smaller wheel size means reduced traction, which we both know these trucks suffer from, leading yo poor handling. You can say that they handle better and are safer than some US vehicles and I can say they are not. Neither of us have a way to objectively prove it, but apparently Maine and Rhode Island are of the opinion that they are not up to standard. I don’t disagree that they have their uses. They make fine farm/utility vehicles. But don’t pretend that they are in the same class as other vehicles on the roads in the US. Again, I’m not saying they should be illegal. I’m saying that there are valid concerns about them, and apparently some DMVs are finding them not to be up to snuff.

Bauhaus - She's In Parties [03:48 | Rock, British Rock, Gothic Rock, Post-Punk] (youtu.be)

Shot in a disused warehouse in Wardour Street London, March 1983. Filmed by Howard Guard (who also directed the iconic Maxell tape advertisements), the end sequence of the band asleep in the back of the limousine was, according to Guard, very much for real. Finally wrapped up as dawn was breaking through. Poignant message with...

This is only supplying like 3.5 amps, so not going to trip any breakers.

MinorLaceration ,

They don’t follow the grid frequency because the EU or US regulations require it, they follow the grid frequency because physics demands it.

MinorLaceration ,

Unrelated to the incident, but I’m getting really fucking tired of articles using some unknown set of people posting online as justification for the conclusions of their articles. I don’t give half a shit what someone posted on the departments facebook page. I give a shit about the incident at hand. Don’t tell me how other people reacted online and expect me to do the same. Tell me what happened and let me come to my own conclusion.

Garbage article and garbage cop.

Or there could be poor signal due to terrain.

Mom of captured U.S. soldier Gordon Black says girlfriend 'lured' him to Russia (www.nbcnews.com)

The worried mother of a U.S. soldier in Russian custody said Wednesday that her son “was lured” there by a Russian woman he had been seeing in South Korea for over a year and that he’s being held on trumped-up charges of stealing roughly $100 from her....

MinorLaceration ,

It’s very common to have bars staffed by foreigners immediately outside of US bases in South Korea.

MinorLaceration ,

To your last point, the bill is targeted at any app owned by a foreign adversary, so whether or not kids move away from tiktok, it will accomplish the same objective.

Israeli Weapon Damaged Iranian Air Defenses Without Being Detected, Officials Say (www.nytimes.com)

“The two Iranian officials said the weapon had struck an S-300 antiaircraft system at a military base in the nearby province of Isfahan. The officials’ account is supported by satellite imagery analyzed by The New York Times, which showed damage to the radar of an S-300 system at the Eighth Shekari Air Base in Isfahan.”...

Because Jordan had an active role in shooting down Iranian drones and missiles while Iraq did not.

Is that hand braided or some mystical form of safety wire I’ve never seen?

MinorLaceration ,

I de-cased a samsung smart tag (basically an airtag) and stuck it in my deck so now I can ping it or track it if I ever lose it. Maybe consider something similar if you buy a new deck.

MinorLaceration ,

Sure the R1s are large, but R2 and R3 are much more reasonably sized and are planned to be lower priced. It seems that these new EV companies like to go with fewer of their higher end cars in the beginning to fund the production of the larger volume, more economic models later.

MinorLaceration ,

Seriously. Don’t cover your eyes and pretend you can’t see why the government treats US companies different than companies that are directly in the hands of adversaries. They might not care if Meta uses it to profit off of us, but they certainly do care if China will use it to achieve an advantage over us, militarily or otherwise.

MinorLaceration ,

Seriously. When did all these slammed/rebuked/savaged/destroyed headlines start showing up? I don’t give a fuck what 3 random people on Twitter said about anyone.

MinorLaceration ,

Interesting headline, but not exactly what I mean. I’ve just been really annoyed lately by headlines that use a very small group of people’s reactions and extrapolate them out to imply that the majority of a group or population think that way.

Things like “X politician railed for X.” There’s nothing substantive in that statement. I want news, not journalists telling me the reactions of nobody I care about.

MinorLaceration ,

I’m not familiar with any of these. Which ones are worth getting?

MinorLaceration ,

Well I am familiar with Sims and I did play one briefly as a kid, but not enough to have an impact. Maybe you’re not old, I just might not be cultured.

MinorLaceration , (edited )

I’m really excited for this. I’ve considered getting a licator beacon for emergencies while hiking and camping, but didn’t want to pay a monthly subscription for something I wouldn’t use every month.

MinorLaceration ,

I got into ham about a year and a half ago. Super interesting, I just didn’t have the time because I was in a pretty intense school. I’d love to tinker with meshtastic, but is that a solution for hiking? Would you need to rely on a node being within range of you in order to convert your message into sms or something?

MinorLaceration ,

Oh nice, the only ones I’ve heard of before are the Garmin inreach and similar. Good to know about this.

MinorLaceration ,

That method of use would not replace what the garmin inreach does. I’m more looking for something to notify authorities of my location in the event of an emergency, rather than to communicate between hikers.

MinorLaceration ,

Yeah that’s exactly what I’d want. Thanks for the link.

MinorLaceration ,

There’s no playing dumb about this from a retired COL. This is not some 3 year E-3 in the national guard. He knew what he was doing. Throw the book at him.

MinorLaceration ,

“Who cares what somebody’s skin colour is if they need help?”

Exactly. Helping people is helping people, regardless of who.

MinorLaceration ,

This comment didn’t age well.

MinorLaceration ,

It read more to me like mistranslations, except for the “border. Border.” part.

MinorLaceration ,

Army parachute riggers wear those red hats so they can be picked out of the crowd to assist paratroopers. It could be them or their equivalent in the Air Force, but I’m not sure if Air Force riggers wear the same hats or not.

The people in the photo are rigging the chutes on those pallets and are either Army or Air Force based on the camouflage pattern.

MinorLaceration ,

Independent of what I think about the Airman’s actions, there’s a legitimate risk that he came prepared to go down fighting. Can’t really blame the secret service for playing it safe.

MinorLaceration ,

It someone is committed enough to a cause to set themselves on fire, who the fuck knows what else they’re willing to do? Who in their right mind would not treat the situation with caution?

The guy was trying to make a point. Is it unreasonable to assume he might try to make the point another way if the original plan doesn’t work out?

Man who intentionally drove his truck into a Muslim family, killing 4, gets life sentence in Canada (apnews.com)

A man found guilty of using his pickup truck to kill four members of a Muslim family was sentenced Thursday to life in prison as a Canadian judge ruled that the actions of the admitted white nationalist amounted to terrorism....

MinorLaceration ,

And ruined the life of the 9 year old boy who survived the attack, despite being seriously injured and watching his family members die.

MinorLaceration ,

I get a 404 error with your link. Is it the same boy? OPs article says 9 years old.

MinorLaceration ,

Parents seriously need to be more aware of what kids are doing on their phones. Why the hell is a 12 year old on snapchat to begin with?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I doubt snapchat requires photo ID in order to make an account. Besides requiring ID, it’s not clear to me how else snapchat would be able to know that she is a minor and that the perpetrator is a sex offender.

MinorLaceration ,

Something tells me you didn’t read my comment.

Unless we want snapchat and other apps to require photo ID, how would snapchat actually know who is a child and who is an adult? Why did the parents not know or care that the kid had snapchat downloaded?

MinorLaceration ,

The first two minutes of this video are very on point with this meme.

MinorLaceration ,

Not to minimize this, but could have been much worse. 100’s of gallons instead of 1000’s. Train remained upright. Sounds like they got lucky.

MinorLaceration ,

Sometimes you’ve got to appreciate some good luck.

MinorLaceration ,

From the article and video, this seems to be one of those times it slightly came off the track. There doesn’t seem to have been collision and the train remained upright.

MinorLaceration ,

Sure, there’s damage, but the train didn’t crash into anything. If I drove into the shoulder of the road and ran over a piece of debris, I could easily damage my car, but I didn’t crash the car.

There’s not really anything subjective here, the train didn’t crash into anything. It derailed and suffered damage.

MinorLaceration ,

Driving over the lane lines does not involve hitting a curb. As I said, in this hypothetical scenario I drove into the shoulder and debris damaged my car. I did not crash.

There’s nothing subjective about this incident. The train derailed. The train remained upright. The train did not collide with an object. The train was damaged. Honestly, you’re really doing some mental gymnastics to rationalize your decision to call it a collision. If you’re just going to do whatever you need to do to convince yourself that it was a collision, nothing I’m going to say will change your mind.

MinorLaceration ,

What an unfortunate name for a journalist.

MinorLaceration ,

Reposting my comment from a duplicate thread:

This article mentions 330 vehicles and 13 containers. By US military terms, that is absolutely nothing. Nothing compared to the equipment we keep stored and maintained in other locations. I feel like the article makes this seem more significant than it is. This is not even a drop in the bucket, let alone enough to call stockpiling as the article does.
