If you look around the world at the Orbans, the Bolsanaros, the Le Penns, the AfD, etc., you will find that polarization and the rising far right is global. First past the post is not a good thing, but the causes are far deeper.

A past global trend was how the center left parties (Democrats in the US, 2nd International Socialist parties in most of the rest of the world) discredited themselves, abandoning their core constituencies and pushing neoliberal economic policies (in the US, free trade, dismantling welfare, the banking deregulation behind 2008). I think that’s the proximate cause in the rise of the global far right.

The cause of that trend is the inability of regulated capitalism to both provide for everyone AND provide the necessary ever increasing rate of profit.

While there have been stirrings of possible left reformist parties (Sanders, Corbyn, Lula, etc) even those that make it into state power are ineffective at creating a new, stable, political economy.

Meanwhile climate change is haunting the globe and the clock is ticking.

My impression of the Russian communist party is that they’ve become more a nationalist party than anything promoting class struggle.

I avoid them if I can. If the store wants me to work for them, they can pay me. If they don’t have any available human checkers, I will pay myself by accidentally not charging some of the items. I have left stores and attempt to tell store managers why.

If we had a sane economic system where jobless folks still got their needs met, I’d be all for automation. But we don’t. So every time we allow the corporations to profit with less human workers, we are fucking over our fellow humans.

“One of the employees at Spirit AeroSystems, which reportedly manufactured the door plug that blew out of an Alaska Airlines flight over Portland, Oregon, allegedly told company officials about an “excessive amount of defects,” according to the federal complaint and corresponding internal corporate documents reviewed by us.

According to the court documents, the employee told a colleague that “he believed it was just a matter of time until a major defect escaped to a customer.”

You paid money for something and then you find you can’t use it again. You seriously think that isn’t fucked up?

Jonna ,

There have been many spans of time when Democrats had enough control of government to push through what they profress. They don’t use those opportunities.

Not arguing that the two parties are the same. They are better than the Republicans by far, but the Democrats are still not our friends. They either need to be destroyed or changed.

Since Eugene McCarthy, to the Rainbow Coalition, and then the campaigns of Kuccinch and then Bernie working inside has not worked. Of course, neither has working outside.

Jonna ,

I doubt you’ve even seen them. Even the protests organized by Palestinians welcome Jewish Voices for Peace who have signs that say, “Never Again Means for Everyone”. And Jewish Voices for Peace organize a lot of protest themselves. Antifa peeps show up to make sure Nazis don’t infiltrate.

Jonna ,

Yeah, it’s a problem. A threatened country integrated a fascist militia into its army. Yes, and that’s bad.

But the country as a whole does not like Nazis at all, and doesn’t vote for them.

“In the 2019 Ukrainian elections, the far-right nationalist electoral alliance, including Svoboda, National Corps, Right Sector, Azov Battalion, OUN, and Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists, under-performed expectations. In the presidential election, its candidate Ruslan Koshulynskyi received 1.6% of the vote, and in the parliamentary election, it was reduced to a single seat and saw its national vote fall to 2.15%, half of its result from 2014 and one-quarter of its result from 2012.”

…m.wikipedia.org/…/Far-right_politics_in_Ukraine

The country has a Jewish president and a Muslim cabinet minister. Sound like a Nazi country to you?

Jonna , (edited )

While voting is a necessary but insufficient way to combat fascism, 96% of voting Ukrainians choosing to not support fascism is a good indicator that fascism is NOT on the agenda in Ukraine. A fascist coup by that 2% supporting fascism would be opposed by the vast majority of Ukraine.

You completely ignore that fact with your hardon for attacking the identity of persons chosen by the Ukrainians.

Edit to explain: I made no argument on what Zelinsky as a Jew or the Muslim cabinet member would be politically, which would be identity politics. This statement of fact (Zelinsky is Jewish) was relevant to the political preferences of the Ukrainian people. Fascists don’t choose Jews and Muslims to represent them.

Zelinsky is a pretty terrible neoliberal, and I’m not actually a fan. But I am a fan a national self determination. So was Lenin.

There are covenants all through Israel that forbid travel and residency by “full citizens” Palestinians of Israeli citizenship. There are separate schools. Do we not remember “separate is not equal”?

Before the Zionist movement, Palestine was ruled first by the Ottomans and then the British. Prior to Zionism, the land held Christians (the latest bombardment destroyed the 3rd oldest Christian Church in the world), Muslims, and Jews. In fact the early Palestinian national movement considered Jewish Palestinians to be Palestinian and their demands them full rights in a secular state of Palestine.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_Jews

Genetics, if that matters, shows that the pre-zionist natives of Palestine are closely related to European (Sepahrdic and Ashkenazi) Jews. Basically some people left centuries ago, but some people stayed.

Now since 1948 those that left want to kick out those that stayed, or kill them if they don’t leave.

Oregon's first-in-the-nation drug decriminalization law faces growing pushback amid fentanyl crisis (apnews.com)

Oregon’s first-in-the-nation law that decriminalized the possession of small amounts of heroin, cocaine and other illicit drugs in favor of an emphasis on addiction treatment is facing strong headwinds in the progressive state after an explosion of public drug use fueled by the proliferation of fentanyl and a surge in deaths...

Are you saying “housing first” works or not?

Because just labeling something “housing first” without actually providing housing of course doesn’t work and that may be what you’re say. But a proper “housing first” DOES WORK to significantly improve people’s lives and reduce their engagement with emergency services (ie, cops and hospitals), which is quality of life for the rest of us.

It’s terrible I can only upvote you once.

Except that is not what the poster you’re replying to said. The poster said, ‘negotiate with Palestinians to hand over Hamas responsible for 10/7’. That’s not ‘negotiating with Hamas’.

There was an ongoing peace process between Israel and the secular PLO with the Oslo Accords and then Israel stopped the process. Israel accelerated land grabs and illegal settlements, and actually PROMOTED Hamas. The PLO organizations had either pledged to not harm civilians or given up armed struggle altogether. But Israel said NO to land for peace and so why should Palestinians choose peaceful negotiations?

Jonna ,

I would have said, “settler colonial state”. What that state is doing to the Palestinians will, in the lense of history, be seen as equivalent to what the United States did to the indigenous peoples.

“Infestation” is too close to fascist antisemitic tropes and while criticism of Israel is NOT automatically antisemitic, it can be.

Maybe calling the entire population of a country Nazis is going a bit too far.

Quoting from the song, “LGBTQ, Let God Burn Them Quickly” Is that not hate speech?

Quoting from the song, “LGBTQ, Let God Burn Them Quickly” Does that qualify?

There’s homophobic remarks and there are songs that are nothing but homophobia from start to end.

Jonna ,

There’s the Egyptian state, which is pretty much the army, and the Egyptian people. Very different sympathies and motives.

Hamas won the last PA elections back in 2006. Fatah tried to prevent Hamas from taking power, and since then they’ve had Fatah in the West Bank (‘protected’ by Israel) and Hamas in Gaza. Because of the conflict between Fatah and Hamas, they’ve not had fully democratic elections since, as neither allows the other to campaign.

My understanding of Palestinian politics is that Fatah lost legitimacy by supporting negotiations with Israel, which Israel undermined. Corruption was also a part.

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” JFK.

Jonna ,

FWIW, Hamas won the last election that the Palestinian Authority held in 2006 (!) Fatah pretty much kept the West Bank, denying Hamas the victory, but couldn’t stop Hamas from taking over in Gaza. My understanding of PA politics was that negotiation with Israel was seen as a dead end and that any party with negotiations as a primary tactic was going to lose. And Israel is responsible for that perception.

Jonna ,

No, until the rise of the modern Zionist movement, there wasn’t a lot of sectarian conflict. (Well, since the Crusades.) There are Palestinian Jews(and Christians) that were living in British Palestine. 1927 coin in English, Arabic, and Hebrew etsy.com/…/1927-and-1942-palestine-2-mils-israel?…

It’s important to note that our sexuality is socially constructed, our desires are not solely based on biology but culture.

Ups and fedex still frequently use USPS for last mile in many areas. USPS has a mandate to serve and maintain infrastructure in the whole US, and the corporations use that. So does Amazon of course.

Jonna ,

My experience says that they’d point at non union competition as an excuse to say no to union demands in negotiations.

Jonna ,

It depends on the kind of strike. Workers that strike over a company’s unfair labor practice are protected from permanent replacements. This is not that tho. While they are far apart, I don’t think they can accuse the companies of refusing to negotiate.

Of course if the union wins the strike then no replacement.

Jonna ,

You are comparing the work of a mass of people to fight back against hate with the actions of authorities and institutions.

Can you see how the work of masses of people is more democratic?

Jonna ,

I use those events in the US (and many more) to condem capitalism. I also use Tianamen (and others) to condem state capitalism.

You mean the women whose degrees and careers were working on AI and who published informed critiques and who were fired for not retracting their criticism?

Please show me where I made any accusations to you. I think you doth protest too much.

Being color blind (or which ever) won’t fight racism. If we don’t acknowledge the difference we end up ignoring the problem. And yes, who they are matters because their experience isn’t something you or I could provide. It isn’t necessarily a fault of ours that we can never know thier experience; we just aren’t treated like they are.

Yes, fuck the rich. But the working class that must fight the rich is a diverse working class.

RFK Jr staff block Israel-Palestine dialogue after the candidate agreed (thegrayzone.com)

“One day after Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. agreed to comedian and podcaster Jimmy Dore’s proposal that he engage with The Grayzone’s editor-in-chief, Max Blumenthal, in a public dialogue on Israel-Palestine, Kennedy’s campaign nixed the discussion.”

Jonna ,

RFK doesn’t have a reputation (or at least, not a good one to anyone not a conspiracist nutter) to destroy.

Cornell West, in 2004 criticized Ralph Nader for running but with held praise from Kerry saying, “I disagree with brother Ralph, he is our brother and friend, but vote for Kerry even tho he is the enemy”. And now he’s doing the same thing. West remembers too well the frustrations of trying to pressure the Obama presidency into a progressive direction.

We do need to escape the lesser evil trap. Every election the Democrats threatened us with Hitler and held us hostage. And every year that moved the Overton window further right until their threats became real.

So I recognize West as an ally even tho I recommend voting for Biden in any state with a contested election.

But simply voting for West won’t create an alternative. More must be done, and far more than just more down ballot left candidates. Organizing, strikes, protests, campaigns, alternative institutions, the gamut of a new culture and system.

Your thoughts on The Orville? (lemmy.world)

When I first started this show I found it to be a really awkward mix of comedy and seriousness. It had some jokes thrown it at the most inopportune times as some kind of comic relief from a really serious situation. Perhaps the first half of the first season was actually a bit rough or maybe the show just grew on me, but by...

I don’t disagree but states like Washington that have long mandated de-escalation training still have this same shit happening. The nature of policing in a capitalist state leads police to view the public as the enemy. Their job is to uphold the status quo, which is structural inequality. Individual cops are still individuals, of course. They just have to swim against the tide of how their job and the culture within departments shapes them.

Given a long enough time on the right hormones, and most (not all) of that advantage disappears. “While absolute lean mass remains higher in trans women, relative percentage lean mass and fat mass (and muscle strength corrected for lean mass), hemoglobin, and VO2 peak corrected for weight was no different to cisgender women. After 2 years of GAHT, no advantage was observed for physical performance measured by running time or in trans women. By 4 years, there was no advantage in sit-ups. While push-up performance declined in trans women, a statistical advantage remained relative to cisgender women.”

There’s also a large band of ability within people. Michael Phelps has a genetic advantage, but his accomplishments are still celebrated.

Fuck generational politics. There are class, gender, and racial divisions within each generation. We have more in common with working class and oppressed boomers than with ruling class members of our own generation.

Jonna ,

As yet, social security is still a SELF-FUNDING program that lends money to the general fund. I’m gen-x, not a boomer. Stop buying into generational warfare. We have more in common with working class boomers than with gen Z tech bros.

Social security is SELF-FUNDING, and even still lends money to the general fund. Yes, this a list of all government spending, but it isn’t what your FICA payment goes towards. Military spending is #1 for that.
