The article says it works by messaging systemd to run the process as the given user, rather than being a SUID binary. So it wouldn’t work without systemd.

The legitimate reason is for crossplay. Sony said in the announcement it was for player “protection”, so they could ban people. Plus there is no doubt some data tracking going on.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Did it? I stand corrected, then.

@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I did this ages ago now. Was a non-issue.

Edit: To clarify, I’m not endorsing MS on not fixing this. Just saying I did it and had no issues.

Heavybell OP ,

I tried, kept getting errors. :/

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like you’ve missed the point, which is only to point out how it is somehow not controversial to suggest a game needs a hard mode while the opposite will get you angry responses.

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks :)

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Agree on the bullet sponge thing, god I hate that. Helldivers 2 does it best, IMO. Not deadlier or more resilient enemies, just more of them and deadlier types.

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I kinda agree with you, tbh. Tho I’d apply that logic to more than just difficulty.

That said tho, I’d also be okay with the devs putting the most work into normal mode but also tossing in barely tested, unbalanced easy and hard modes with a “this is not the intended experience, use at your own peril” warning. I know no AAA dev would do that but I’d honestly be okay with it.

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

It’s only controversial if you want the game to have easier options. ;)

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think it’s fair to point at Mario’s challenging bonus levels as examples of adding to the experience by adding challenge, because they are part of the original experience. They are part of the developer’s intended product.

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

This is a fair point. I have seen violent reactions to casual statements, but I have not seen hyperbolic calls for hard modes nearly as much as for easy modes, it`s true.

Heavybell OP ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Right? :P

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Probably a dumb suggestion but… I know you can get cat feeders that will detect your cat’s microchip and only let them in. I wonder if you could get a litterbox that uses similar tech to only open for Kika?

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

“Buying American” would be exporting money for me, and there’s no domestic car manufacturing anymore. So I’m sending money overseas no matter what I buy, and it’s probably all made in China anyway… :P

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I’m okay with most of this, but don’t want to see this logic universally applied. For example, I think art should be preserved, and that includes games. Consigning years of work from dozens to hundreds of people to the void because the publisher got tired of it absolutely should be considered a monumental failure.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

How many anti-drone drones for the same money?

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

The best part is, unless that function name is misleading, it doesn’t matter how the data is passed; a copy is being sent out over TCP/IP to another device regardless.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

It’s true tho… for some new users. If the new user wants to learn linux fundamentals, there’s no better way than hand installing Gentoo or Arch. Ideally on a second PC and using it as a home server.

Now if they just want an alternative OS for their main PC, yeah, go for something else.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Unironically yes. Gravity is the weakest of the 4 main forces.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Addictive is right. I’m in the process of building myself a smart mailbox with a couple proximity sensors and an ESP32. It’s been quite the undertaking, and quite expensive if you count the tools I bought for the project.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

The “app” is just a frontend, a thin venier over a cloud-hosted service that doesn’t even know anon “deleted” it. Functionally, the same result could be achieved by not opening the app for a few days.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Dude truly one sees these two options, huh?

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I am not tempted by my intrusive thoughts, personally. Never understood the “intrusive thoughts won” meme. :P

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I have to assume so. Mine are very much not welcome or tempting in the slightest.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. All the time, and worse options besides. But there’s no temptation to do those things. It`s more like I’m being reminded that those are options, that nothing besides my own will – and the fact that I am in control of my body – prevents me from doing them. It’s scary. I hate it.

The part I don’t get is the idea that other people claim to have voices urging them to do these things.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah we`re both getting downvoted for this, it seems.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

The act in the picture isn’t a thought at all. It’s the result of someone deciding to do something destructive to see the result. I can’t imagine the thought “what if I stuck my soldering iron in the side of my solder spool” was that unwanted, distressing or upsetting, either. After all, OP decided to do it.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I have inner monologue. And yes I know what I am describing is intrusive thoughts.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I am not hearing voices urging me to do things, don’t worry :P

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

In my understanding, intrusive thoughts is something like this: you`re walking along the street and pass a woman pushing a pram, and a thought pops up reminding you that you could kick it into the traffic if you wanted, and here’s all the consequences. And because you’re not a psycho you reel at the idea, wanting to smack your head for even imagining it. But there is no temptation, no urging. The thought cannot “win” because it is not trying to get you to do it, it’s just an imagined possible scenario.

This is something different from having an impulse, which is something you could act upon as you describe. Or, I suppose, it is indeed to just decide to do something from your intrusive thoughts, but that seems unlikely because a key part of the definition of “intrusive thought” is that the thought must be unwelcome and/or distressing.

I still love Sonic 1. I hate that so many fans of the series look down on it, despite the ring mechanic making the most sense in this game of all of them. Such a great example of optional difficulty.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

All fair points. I just wish they hadn’t slowly stripped away all the reasons to try to hold onto a decent quantity of rings. In Sonic 1 it was the biggest optional challenge; either shit your way to the end getting hit and grabbing at least one as it bounces out of you, or try to finish the level with 50 in order to have a chance at the “true ending”.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

This happened to me, except it was primary school bully. I asked them if they remembered why, they said they think they thought I was weird, and I nodded while they pumped petrol into my car. Then I paid and left, and I have not seen them since.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

GOG doesn’t contribute to Proton AFAIK, and doesn’t offer amazing QOL stuff like Steam Input. But what you buy from them is yours forever, assuming you sensibly back it up yourself. So “best we got” is debatable depending on what you value.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I see. That’s a fair point, and yeah I do worry about GOG’s potential for enshitification. But knowing at least my past purchases will not become shit is some small comfort.

Heavybell ,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

The problem with blazor as I understand it, is that no, it does not compile your C# into WASM. Instead, it compiles into a standard .net module – with as much excising of unused code as possible – and distributes it with a CLR that is compiled to WASM. So effectively you’re running the .net VM inside the WASM VM. If you do client-side blazor, which is not even MS’s push anymore because they stand to make more money if you write server-side blazor and deploy it to Azure.

Do look it up yourself tho. I could have a totally wrong understanding. I haven’t looked into it in some time because I’ve not been in a position to start a new frontend project from scratch. I would love to do my frontend stuff in C# though, don’t get me wrong.

I know vlans is the answer, but I don’t know how to set it up. I really need to do this with my own network some day. There must be an OPNsense guide for this, I know it…
