Your favorite web UI for your linux server?

Do you use any web ui’s for your Linux server? I’m comfortable managing my server using the command line, but I also want a graphical interface that shows an overview of what is running on the server, the way the resources are being used what containers are running and so on. Also file download uploads would be great to...

A bit off-topic, but why do many self hosting-related stuff tries to “reinvent the wheel” so to speak with things that exists even on smart tvs nowadays? Even then, who is gonna edit videos (for example) on a smart tv? “Oopsie, time to get my mouse and keyboard and do some heavy video editing on my TV!”

@ontopic, eh. btop is enough for me as well. Maybe glances if I’m feeling “haxxor” enough. :^)

Eh, I see your point.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Just “man up” and do a minimal install of (any distro you want), and (manually) install the things you want via the package manager.

…no really. All it takes is two commands (one to search for the package you want, and the another one to install it).

“b-buh its my first ti–”

Recommendations for OS on a rpi 4B (outside of RaspPiOS)

Quickly wondering what people recommend as OS for a rpi model 4b, outside of the RaspPiOS ofc. I want to use the RPI for all networking related stuff (dont worry its not using an sd-card). So PiHole, and I’ll also want to use it as my exit-node out of my Tailnet. I will also run ProtonVPN on it so that all my devices...

It comes ready for daily usage “out of the box”.

Yey! I can’t wait to meet my perfect match from this completely random and totally suspicious bot from an completely unknown location!

“Dad! How do I find a perfect girlfriend?”

“You just have to wait for a random bot from an unknown, doubtful place/location to do that for you my son.”

Eh, I don’t do anything illicit on the internet neither work at NASA or any other high-security-related job… so I’m in the “Lol” side of this whole story.

Compile your commands, kids.

You make it sound like all distros are paid, not free. With that said… all distros can deliver the same quality as you’d expect out of a “stable OS”. Still, theres Nobara, Linux Mint, ZorinOS and Garuda for your “noob-friendly” needs.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

HoloISO if you -REALLY- want to have a “steamdeck-like” experience. Unless if you mean “steam focused” as in “gaming focused”…? Then (pretty much) any distro you want – as long as its a minimal install. Tweak it to your needs, make steam run when you log in. And thats it.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

cp -r to an external drive. And cp -r back in case something goes wrong.

I know, it’s boring and no way “modern”. But hey, it works and it does not require internet access!

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

I remember the first time I managed to run Doom outside of the usual “point-and-click mentality” on ZorinOS. It felt like I went back to the DOS era where I had to do the good ol’ SETUP.EXE to setup the soundcard, etc. But yeah – you’ve got to let go your “do it for me” mentality and start to get used to do the stuff yourself. But it gets easier when you get used to it.

THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP, LADS! ITS FINALLY HA-

Which version of a distro to install?

Hi Linux- how important is it to install, say Debian, the version that is specifically made for your hardware? For example, if I have a Rock64 SBC, do I have to install Debian-rock64.img or can I just go with Debian-arm64.img? Will I lose performance/features if using generic arm64 image, or conversely, will I gain...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

It seems that Debian-rock64.img is an armhf image (i.e 32 bits) and Debian-arm64.img is (obviously) an 64 bit image… so go for the latter if your board has 8 GiB ram and up and the former if 4 GiB ram and under.

Buy a rpi 4 and use it to do a livestream of (pretty much anything you want).

Like I said, anything you want. Just get creative.

tl;dw: “If it does not deliver the exact same experience as Windows = don’t bother.”

Yeah…no.

t. Have 0 issues with the mentioned “issues” in the video. I use arch btw. :^)

There might be a chance for false-positives. Or to just clog your dns responses with repetitive queries.

Then again, you don’t need more than a HaGeZi blocklist anyway.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Neither. Nextdns can block ads plus much more.

Distro for experienced Linux user

Hi, I’m looking for a distro for my laptop. My first distro was Pop!_OS, then I switched to Fedora, then Arch for a year and 2 months ago I switched to Fedora Silverblue, because I wanted to try immutable distro that relies on containers and flatpaks to be usefull. Silverblue is great but not so much for me, its not flexible...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

All distros are exactly the same. Theres no such thing as a “distro for experienced users”. With that said, just do a minimal install of (pretty much anything you want).

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

There is being careful, and there is “The sky is emitting a weird tone of blue. Am I going to die?” kind of “being careful”.

Chrono Trigger for the “trippy” story.

Pretty much any NES game for the “gamer” soundtrack (beep bops.)

Give browser and wine ownership to user "nobody" = "foolproof" against viruses?

Title. Just had this baseless yet possible idea on my head and I’d like to know how wrong it is? Since afaik, “nobody” has absolutely zero permissions… other than the ones given by the user. Pretty sure I’m missing something vital or important, but… I’m completely fine being called dumb every now and then....

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

For a second I really thought there was “something else” behind the “nobody” user – considering its a “typically suggested” user to be used within docker containers (even in some “known” commands/Dockerfiles). So all I need to do then to create a user with the least amount of privileges is to not give it a home directory and a shell? Eh.

Thanks a lot nonetheless.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

That was masterfully explained. Once again, thanks a lot.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

It was a “hidden feature”, pretty much.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

It used to be a lot back then. Right now? Not really.

t. Got a Orange pi zero 3 w/ 1 GiB of ram and the performance is really great.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Not going to happen. Money is good, but we are too addicted to freedom already.

Even if it happened for whatever reason, that’d make most users fall back to “vanilla” versions of Linux.

GustavoM , (edited )
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Eh… for home servers, when you want to take a quick glance at the files (maybe you are running a script that copies files around after some time…?). Then again, I don’t really find em useful when I have ls -al shoved inside my brain. It’s (kind of) “second nature” at this point.

Best Desktop Distro for Gaming?

I currently run windows 10 on my main desktop PC, and also have a steam deck that I sometimes use in desktop mode instead of my desktop. With the way Windows is going, and the way Linux Gaming is dramatically improving, I might consider ditching Windows, at least for the most part, on my next PC build. What would be the best...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Nobara if you want to “install-and-forget”.

Any non-Ubuntu-based distro, minimal install if you don’t mind tweaking.

but why not Ubuntu

For some reason it likes to slip some unsolicited bloatware in – no idea why.

Theres a free to play MMORPG called FFXIV with a free and unlimited trial that can get you sorted. But if you really, REALLY want to meet new folks (only)… then your best bet is to hit a nearby bar, grab a seat, drink and do some small talk with random folk.

GustavoM , (edited )
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Really good stuff.

-EDIT- I went ahead and “dockerized” it. :^)

GustavoM , (edited )
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Pretty sure it won’t leak (I used gcc under musl to compile it with a few safeguard flags).Still, its a fun little experience to (at least try to) dockerize everything. :p

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve got a very simple rule for this.

If it doesn’t affect my mood in any way and/or affects it negatively (before/while playing)? Then I stop playing and go for the next one.

And yes, this also goes for “muh childhood” games.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Why not? It’s comically easy to set up one.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

…or you could opt for other ways to improve your PC performance. For instance, using equal values for both scaling_max_freq and scaling_min_freq gives you a quite considerable performance boost at the expense of (almost) nothing.

Eh…I see your point.
