A bit controversial, but Hyprland has one of the most user-friendly manual I ever seen. And its very usable as is.

I’m not using Linux/GNU because of numbers tho, so who cares.

@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Arch, Debian, Ubuntu and its derivatives, Manjaro, a bit of NixOS, Tails. I don’t need to explain “Why?” since I don’t use em for personal preference, but more like “when I’m forced to.”.

Nice timing – been trying to figure out a way to enable gpu support on the Orange pi zero 3 those last few days and this guide might help me w/ it.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Why not? It’s a (free) tool, just like Windows and Steam. Then again, I “use” Linux/GNU because of one thing: User. Control.

Afaik, emoticons…er…sorry, emojis are (mostly) dictionary words. And using most (if not all) as passwords is a one-way ticket to “wtf happened to my work PC and why my boss wants to kill me”-land.

Edit: I thought this was an obvious enough joke towards your obvious enough joke – just “outjoking” your joke. :^)

Even a decade old 486 is decent for “daily driving” if you have really low standards.

t. I’m planning on going “hermit mode” for a bit and enjoy some text-only, old school internet.

Awesome if you consider systemd to be a curse for whatever reason.

“The same thing” if otherwise.

What do we learned today, kids?

No user control = more malicious possibilities of infecting/screwing up your PC.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

That is a really solid tip! Don’t mind me if I yoink it.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

“That guy” here. I don’t go “further” than setting everything up with firejail and then creating a mavclan port/connection pointing my main ip through it and then removing whatever is in my eth0 port/connection. All that with netctl.

“Does it work”? Well, whoever tries to scan my ip for open ports with nmap gets a nice and sweet “All ports are closed” message back. So eh… I’ll be fine. :^)

Finally had enough of Windows. I'm packing up. I'm nervous!

Edit2: Writing this from Pop_Os! I had experience with Mint for my Self hosting rig and wanted to see other pastures. Decided to rearrange my three drives, two of them are still Windows, another I emptied and dedicated to Pop OS. That way I still have easy fallback to Windows if I need to do something fast and then I’ll know...

The only thing that is stopping a Windows user from becoming an average Linux user is the package manager. Just ask Duckduckgo about “(Your distro name here) package manager cheat sheet”, memorize it, and thats it.

The next step would be installing a minimal installation of your distro – which is (also) really easy as well. All you have to do is to install (either Xorg or sway or Hyprland) with the --install-recommends flag (or similar), edit a specific file (.bash_profile) inside your home directory (cd ~), add the binary file of your chosen package (same name as its package name – sway or Hyprland, etc.) and thats it.

Friendly reminder that this is a “very short resumée” of what you have to do. But it will (definitely) get you sorted.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

That’d be true if Windows users were a some sort of “excluded humans from society” kinda thing where the English language was entirely new to em. Or like Linux users used some “exclusive-never-heard-anywhere-else” terms. Which thankfully, both are a fallacy.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

A bit unrelated, but you could go for (gentle) water splash sounds or rain.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

It’s called “The package manager”. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

No nvme support? Oh come on. Still using microhdmi? OH COME ON

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Should have went with stock support from the get-go, tho. Why? Because nvme lasts ““forever”” and is ideal for servers.

Could use a "tl;dr guide" of sorts on how to use Android.

In other words… a “Use this to do that” guide. Or more specifically, how to customize it (Get rid of the wallpaper, use lower resolutions, set up apps to run on boot, permanently change scaling_min_freq, etc without the usage of third party apps) and where to find a decent/optimized version of it (Something like LineageOS?...

Moving to Arch/EndeavorOS from PopOS?

I’ve been using PopOS for a few months now, and I’m interested in Arch, but I’m worried about whether or not I have enough experience to do that successfully. Also, I have an Nvidia GPU until I start a new build in the next year or so. I don’t know if that’ll be a problem in Arch. It was a major issue with Fedora for...

  • How to do the most basic things

How to search for a package: sudo pacman -Ss packagename

How to install a package: sudo pacman -S packagename

How to update: sudo pacman -Syu

How to remove a package: sudo pacman -Rcns packagename

How to clean old packages: sudo pacman -Sc --noconfirm

Arch linux installer (official): archinstall

…and that is (pretty much) all you need to learn to use Arch linux in an acceptable fashion. Now go ahead and give it a spin – you’ll love it.

Nowadays, a “freedom-respecting” and/or a “privacy-respecting” browser became a myth. Even so, a buzzword. If you believe theres such browser, you are delusional.

In a nutshell:

  • Have (real) user control.
GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Heres a tl;dr of some “must learn” things in order to use GNU/Linux in an acceptable fashion;

  • Package manager (how to install, remove, clean old packages)
  • The “know-hows” (Which package goes for audio, video card, webcam, etc)
  • How to make a minimal/baremetal installation (Which is a very simple process nowadays – it takes only one package to do this)

Thats it.

Linux can be used at your workplaces (lemmy.ml)

I’m just tired. On the last post about having Linux at our work, many people that seems to be an IT worker said there have been several issues with Linux that was not easy to manipulate or control like they do with Windows, but I think they just are lazy to find out ways to provide this support. Because Google forces all their...

Should I give Arch a shot?

I’ve been using Linux as my main OS for a couple of years now, first on a slightly older Dell Inspiron 15. Last year I upgraded to an Inspiron 15 7510 with i7-11800H and RTX3050. Since purchasing this laptop I’ve used Manjaro, Debian 11, Pop OS, Void Linux, Fedora Silverblue (37 & 38) and now Debian 12. I need to reinstall...

You make it sound like its a paid distro – just go ahead and give it a shot. Worst case scenario – you’ll learn lots of new things and will give your brain a few extra, healthy braincells. :')

Yeah, Linux breaks sometimes, we're here for you.

Four days ago, I woke up, as I usually expect to after going to sleep and I turned on my really fucking awesome Archlinux gaming rig, hit the desktop and decide, hmmmm… I haven’t updated in a while(a week), let’s pacman -Syyuu and get up to speed. All games (theoretically) run on Linux – cloud gaming is a thing. Even if you may say “B-but muh input lag” its extremely doable and reliable as of now.

I can`t give you any technical details, but real-world ones – it (drastically) decreased my cpu temps and cpu usage, while providing a slightly better performance overall.

Cheap and good mini-PCs for gaming?

Hello, everybody! I want to have a little mini-PC for gaming that operates like a console. I don’t want to have a big, clunky case in the back or front of the TV. Furthermore, I don’t play many AAA titles from recent years, so the hardware doesn’t need to be high-end. It would be nice if I could run Scarlet Nexus, Nier:...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Orange pi zero 3 is good enough for gaming if you lower your expectations and don’t mind switching between retrogaming and cloud gaming 24/7.

t. got a 1GiB one and its excellent for my use case.

Secure distro for daily use

Hi, Im searching for a secure distro for normal daily use for my laptop. Currently Im running arch linux with full disk encryption, secure boot, linux hardened, firewalld and most apps as flatpaks (with some disabled permissions using flatseal). I think its pretty secure laptop but it could be more secure....

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

a secure distro for normal daily use

Any distro, really. Tails and Tor may have some extra features but aren’t mandatory by any means. Just make sure Common Sense Antivirus ™ is g2g and you should be good.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Since when a rule change to (any site whatsoever) related to technology in any way? Yeah, we get it, you HATE “Xtwitter” and want it to burn but please… you are beating a dead horse at this rate. Just let it go.

That, or the mods around here need a reality check and start dropping some chill pills (i.e temp. bans) on users like OP…

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

1- Switch to Arch Linux (no, really.)

2- Do a minimal installation

3- Search for “arch linux improving performance”. There should be a guide in the arch linux wiki regarding some system-wide tweaks via sysctl.conf – follow it.

4- Also search for “how to enable zram arch linux”. Basically, it clogs your cpu a bit to squeeze a bit more of ram out of your system. Follow it as well.

Don’t expect any “miracles” out of this… but it should make things more doable/tolerable.

If everything goes wrong, then you can always resort to either geforcenow or xcloud. Or both.
