That is like, trying to convince a meat lover to eat veggies (only) but seriously? Just download an iso @ linuxmint.com, give it a spin. It’s free. Be aware that “It’s not Windows” so expect some things to not behave “by the Windows logic”. “Duckduckgo is your friend”, even if it means asking the most trivial things “How do I install $thing on Linux mint?”, and you’ll be just fine.

Custom shell prompt tips and tricks?

Recently I stumbled over an article, about how to customize your shell prompt. What really surprised me, is that it lacked one of the most basic tips I learned nearly 20 years back: Always display a timestamp in the prompt, to be able to check how long a process is running or when it ended. (Don’t need it daily, but every so...

Use PS1=“▌t▐nw→” to display your local time each time you press enter. And make aliases of lengthy commands such as alias internettest=“curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest.py | python -” (You need to install python to run this.)

I might get some folk throwing rocks at me for saying this, but Gentoo. It’s literally “the placebo distro”. As in, “compile pretty much every command your distro has in exchange for a measly half a second faster boot times!”. Even if you’d say, “Oh, but it does make a difference when running it on my potato!”… just… buy something better already.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Mint if you are a newbie.

ZorinOS if you have no idea what you are doing.

Gentoo if you hate yourself.

Debian for that false sense of security (Its motto is “outdated packages = more security”).

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Eh…just trying to learn some new things regarding common “dockerization”-related things, and improving its security.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

If the end-goal is not learning but having an as secure container as possible

It’s actually both – there is always something new to learn, after all. And thanks for these tips, I’ll read em right now.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

copying in key elements from the host machine

Not from the host machine, but from the official nginx image ( nginx:mainline-alpine3.18-slim ). And what it (basically) does is separate the essential commands/files inside a scratch image and gives every command a custom username tag.

Still, I appreciate your input.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Now you’ve confused me a little bit – is there any difference between a scratch and a distroless image? Aren’t they (technically) the same thing?

That aside, thank you for your input and compliment.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying. And I’ve got to admit that “dockerizing” everything is a fun process indeed. :P

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

DE? What is that?

  • Me, an “minimal install” user

Jokes aside, I don’t fiddle with shortcuts unless its something that involves other command(s) instead of the one(s) I currently have on my /usr/local/bin directory.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed – why switching to a distro that tries to “reinvent the wheel”? Or even less so, one that makes (basic) things worse for the sake of “pros only”?

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

No, but I’d gladly do so if it shows a considerable performance improvement compared to their “standard” counterparts.

What's the difference between package manager and why are there so many?

Are they so different that it’s justified to have so many different distributions? So far I guess that different package manager are the reason that divides the linux community. One may be on KDE and one on GNOME but they can use each other’s packages but usually you are bound to one manager

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Convenience/ease of use; There’s a little caveat that only “true linux users” are able to notice, tho –

… compiling is, and always will be, the best option.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think theres anything else that might happen with Linux – it’s already “The free Windows” as is.

Nvidia SUCKS!

I am trying to repeat my 10 Benchmarks video on my 3080M laptop, which I haven’t really used for a while apart from testing NVK. I had forgotten just HOW much Nvidia sucks. I had to reinstall the OS cause OpenSUSE stopped booting after I installed the drivers the first time. X11 is ALSO buggy on Nvidia and crashes randomly....

@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Reject AMD/NVidia

Embrace RISC-V.

(No, really. I’m unironically considering using an risc-v sbc as my next “main desktop pc” for the next few years, and relying (only) on cloud gaming for my dopamine needs.)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

…are you sure about that? 10 Gibps is about to be standardized all around the globe.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Huh? Third world countries are 100% capable to deal with streaming servers with flawless performance – where are you getting those ideas from?

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

No, but we are talking about a STREAMING service. Which means, an ISP would have to be beyond terrible if it couldn’t provide decent streaming performance under an 10 Gibps connection. Which thankfully, is not the case even for Africans, Nigarians or any other “sub third-world country.”

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve no idea. But yeah, it does work wonders.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Are you talking about remapping your mouse buttons to keyboard buttons?

Exactly.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. Like left shift instead of left mouse click.

And I honestly don’t know.

Well, I tried this idea with Planetside 2 (Which is a very “messy” game where it can easily use more than 10 hotkeys at a time) and it started to feel “natural” after 30 minutes - 1 hour of gaming. And can’t really give you a key mapping that will work for you “just like that” but try placing your “non-aiming” hand at the keyboard (right over your commonly used movement keys) and pay attention to where your finger(s) are and change your shooting hotkey to where one of your “non-occupied” fingers are. Then test it for a while, and see if it “feels right”. If it doesn’t, then switch to something else.

As for me, left shift felt more “natural” since I use WASD and my left hand (when relaxed) lands exactly to where the left shift key is.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Heh, I’m also a old fart – 40 years old. Still, anxiety can also be a problem since it makes you anticipate your shots or freak out easily.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

That is an interesting take, which (also) makes sense – each millimeter matters when you are using a weapon that demands the most precision in order to hit your targets. And multitasking with your “aiming hand” can mean the difference between being able to hit your target or not. Even so while burst firing.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed. Theres also burst firing, which can get significantly easier/more “natural”. Or when you are an old chap like me who panicks all the time, lessening the effect quite significantly as well.

GustavoM OP ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. And I still play from time to time, despise getting my arse served by most players. And I’ve got to admit that hand tension is exactly -THE- “main” problem for me, despise trying to be as relaxed as possible with drinks and the like. I do have lots of “Why my crosshair isn’t moving to where I want it to go?” moments due to it.

…and I… (kind of) given up, honestly. I’m about to be a 40 year old geezer, so eh.

GustavoM ,

Who on earth would click on this post and go like “Ooga booga me wanta wooma” like all it takes to “get” girls is to have magical powers and snap your fingers or unleash a magic fart and suddenly all your problems go away or some random babble.

For all the doubters that Linux gaming is smoother and faster. (video.hardlimit.com)

A video for any doubters that Linux gaming is better than Windows in which it DESTROYS Windows by 25% in AC Odyssey. To put it in perspective, 25% improvement is like getting a new GPU. You can save $600 and instead use something like OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for free....

Do you use any web ui’s for your Linux server?
