You are in for a hell of a ride when you figure out that folks STILL downvote randoms for self-validation purposes, even if theres no “punishment” for the other user.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

So you are proposing we “fight back” by bringing more users, including the ones who are denigrating the internet.

Something something “pot called the kettle black”.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

A-bleeping-men. The “unspoken rule” of the internet is “Follow the trends and what the majority is saying. Because if you are not, then please fuck off.”. Its all about self-validation for the sake of (everything) nowadays. Even if it means screaming at randoms for minor/futile reasons.

*sigh. Back in my days, it was all about trash talking with randoms and enjoying the company of said randoms – and we loved every second of it. It was a little, happy place pretty much.

Nowadays its a “depression center” of sorts where everything is wrong and nothing is right.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Because its a “niche” distro (like OpenBSD) that does not have a “real” purpose. As in, its niche is not “mandatory” by any means.

Spoilers: Third world war will start at October, to go through clueless and senseless deaths all around the world, for uhhhhhh…6 years’ish.

Then (not really sure beyond that tbh) we will have a worldwide apparition of Our Lady of Garanbandal… something something “folks will die of shame by witnessing their sins being committed”, etcetc. The antichrist will come, christians will be hunted like animals.

Demons will manifestate, wander around. Everyone will accept em as saviors, praise em, etc. Lucifer will claim victory, etc.

Then, 2nd cometh of Christ, etc, judge everyone, etc. Hell will close, etcetc. New Jerusalem, etc.

So um… yeah. 10 years at best, 20 years at worst.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Welp. Thankfully my current AMD desktop PC will be the last one I’ll be using in my whole lifetime – RISC-V 4va. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

…like getting myself (intentionally) robbed and then shot to the head? I mean, you are not wrong – it’ll surely make me a better person in the end…

…if I survive, that is.

So I’d rather leave it as it is, thank you very much.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Self-validation is one hell of a drug. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, lad… folks really love the circlejerk and can’t/won’t stop doing it until it dies down. It’s kind of like “talking to a wall” at this rate.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

This is it, lads! At least, the YEAR OF THE LI—

…oh.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Either an external hard drive or a pendrive. Just put one of those in a keychain and voila, a perfect backup solution that does not need of internet access.

…it’s not dumb if it (still) works. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

The X-box. X.org, the X files… and now, simply… X.

Folks really love the X letter for some reason.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

“You better not touch the F word! Call of Duty did it first!”

Welp. I can see it happening.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Make it double X’s for extra “salt to the fire” points.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah. X marks the spot, etc.

Theres also three X’s which means… uhhmmm… “that”.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Xucking xour xom?

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Seconded. ZorinOS was my very first Linux distro that “held my hand” for a while.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Weird drama over nothing tbh

Welcome to the Internet friendo! Now I must ask your attention for this unnecessarily long post to partake into your indirect attempt (yet it happened anyways) to trigger my emotions and my masculinity with your attempt to bruteforce common sense into our lovely community.

Please do apologize, or else I will forced to report you for ill-mannered behavior.

And if you reply to this, even if its the most sane-rational-intended – then you are a hater and you must cease any attempt to rationalization.

We are oppressed by the fascists enough as it is already.

Apologize. Now.

Why is my Lemmy experience feeling so lame? **UPDATE**

I’ve subscribed to a plethora of communities that really interest me and actually have posts and discussions in them, but I have to go to the specific community to see this. My “Subscribed” feed only contains a few of the same posts that I’ve seen for weeks in Hot, the same posts from even longer ago in “Active”,...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

“Hey man. Just uhhhh… you know… paint some walls with colored rainbows and ponies and shiz. That’ll make the world better.”

  • (You)

I mean, I know that complaining won’t change anything, but holy bimbles in my dimples, you are really suggesting this guy to just ignore all the porn and start adding some “healthy content” in? There is this thing called tendency… and if a certain community/place/etc has some “furry porn” in? Then its not him that’ll (magically) change it “for the better”. It’ll not make the “furry porn apologists” (suddenly) stop being degenerates. Its one guy versus a bunch of porn-addicted, degenerative individuals. He doesn’t stand a chance. Your post is just plain “wishful thinking”.

THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP LADS

ITS HAPPENING

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

This. Even if I don’t see a purpose to go anything beyond Armbian + Debian + “prebuilt” Manjaro.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Ja, OP. Wenn Lemmy untergeht, werden wir alle Deutsche.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Put in two more X’s and it’ll be…

…oh nvm, it already is.

'WAHHH B-BUT FASC–"

Sorry lad, but you can’t change the world by shouting buzzwords at others and expect em to (magically) become the way you want em to b— sorry, “different”. N-n-no, wait…! Uhm… more… “socially accepted” towards an “excluded minority”. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

It’s called “common courtesy” OP – which does not need to be demanded by others, but expected. And if someone calls you a cunt for your lack and/or non demonstration of the former… then it 's not a demand, but calling your attention for your lack of knowledge/ignorance.

It’s like a fetish.

…a very weird one.

Linux distro for a laptop I might barely use (lemmy.sdf.org)

For years, I’ve gotten by with a desktop at home running Arch and a work laptop running Kubuntu. Now I want a laptop that’s not owned by my job, so that I can use a computer outside the house and not have my workplace own the IP rights of whatever I do on it. My workload is basically just going to be emacs and web browsing,...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

dumb shit.

There you go, I said it. now what nerd

*raises fists

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

As dumb/simple/boring as this may be…? An external hard drive.

…what? It doesn’t require you to be online 24/7, works at any™ PC, and the speed is really great – even on a potato.

Unless you work at NASA or at IBM or similars – then feel free to call me dum.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Eh…you’ve got a point there. Then again, there is always pendrives and other extremely small devices where you can copy your (mostly important/crucial) files in and carry it along with your house/car keys or something like that.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Then you haven’t posted enough and/or love the “herd mentality” – it’s my 1 month in and I already been massively downvoted twice by randoms with multiple accounts.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Um…it actually happened on non-“meme communities”. Can’t mention their names for obvious reasons, but yeah.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

There is a major difference between checking my post history for “culprits” and me saying it out loud who did what and who did not. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

…what? You don’t do pushups or run around your home to pass up time/self-distraction? Huh, I thought that was the most common/normal thing ever.

If China fails to intervene in North Korea, US will take action, says Antony Blinken (www.scmp.com)

America’s top diplomat on Friday said the US would take action if China declined to intervene in the military deployment of North Korea, a hermit state and Beijing ally the US has long accused of playing a destabilising role in East Asia....

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t worry, lads. When the US says “intervene”, they really meant to say “We will add more restrictions/sanctions regarding trading stuff with our fellow broskis. That’ll show em.”

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

“rolled over?” What does that mean?

They pulled a “this is my life now” and carried on. In other words: Users got screwed, Netflix LMAO’ed at em.

Basically, you’ve got to let your “inner DIY” fluctuate so you can use Linux/GNU. Which is a rather easy thing to do when you acknowledge the “know-hows”.

What is your machine naming scheme?

I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...

urmom = main pc

Distro suggestions?

Currently running Kali on my laptop as that’s all it was used for. Looking for something more general purpose. Mainly steam for light gaming and being able to install the tools from Kali for stuff like tryhackme. Mostly familiar with Debian, as that’s what Kali is based on, but willing to try something else. Laptop is this...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Linux mint if you are new.

ZorinOS if your mom will use your PC.

Arch linux if you are sane.

Gentoo if you are insane.

Ubloatu, Fedora, Slackware and friends if you want to be a “different” user.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

“It makes your internet faster you dum.”

-Me when someone asks “what all that stuff does?”

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Three words:

Baby duck syndrome.

how it can be addressed?

Without turning Linux into “another Windows”? Well… you (kind of) can’t – Windows users are way too used with the idea of being spoonfed by the OS. And the only “real” way to address it is to tell Windows users to change their mentality and “embrace the new”.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

As someone who enjoys a bit of practicality into everything…? I was tempted to buy one of those little tidbits for a “futureproof” feel onto everything I plugged the little bastards in.

Until I met the… kvm switch. It may not allow me to plug a billion different things into it… but damn. It really works.

flicker , (edited ) to youshouldknow

YSK: Just because something is easy for you, does not mean that it is easy.

ETA; Why you should know; everyone has natural talents, everyone has skills they developed with practice or over time. Something that feels easy to you might be difficult for someone else to grasp, or they might have a different background or a different way of doing things. When you show someone else how to do something, or when you ask someone else to do something, you need to set aside your expectations on how they might do that thing, or how quickly, or how well.

Be patient. Understand not everyone comes naturally to every new skill or new talent. Some people have learning disabilities or just a lack of familiarity with skills you consider "basic." And try not to belittle someone for needing extra time to master something you find "simple" or they may never try again!

Edit2: Kind of like how I can't figure out how to edit this to save my life. I've been belittled in the past for being bad at things so my instinct was to delete this, but seeing all the conversation, I couldn't bring myself to do it! Consider me a lesson in action!

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

…unless its something really basic like washing your dishes or tying a rope.
