If it was any smaller I probably would have gotten it, I felt bad for the poor thing. But this was one of those big 2ft tall bears and I just don’t have the room.

Dawn of War and its expansions are awesome, if you don’t mind playing a game from two decades ago.

It was right around the release of Star Wars Episode I, and the new pastor thought if he brought modern pop culture references into his sermon, maybe The Youths would sit up and pay attention.

The sermon was a whole thing about “being a Jedi Knight for God” and it was insufferable. I’m not sure time has ever gone by slower. I was twelve and absolutely not won over, I wanted to crawl out of the pew and die.

JustWatch does a decent job of telling you if a specific movie is on any of the streaming services. For example, I just searched for the movie Tombstone and apparently it’s on Apple TV+, Hulu, and AMC’s service.

It’s not always accurate, so take everything it says with a grain of salt, but it’s better than nothing.

Thank you for reminding me of this. I started a few years ago, got about a dozen albums in, and then fell off because I got busy with stuff. I was just thinking about how I need to find more music, time to pick this back up.

If there isn’t a minor league baseball team in Pennsylvania called the Squonks, someone needs to get on that right away.

Games that still need more patience: what games released a year ago (or older) are you waiting for a sale on? Or that need another patch?

Other than a slew of Nintendo titles that maybe hopefully will come down in price (the patient gamers’ bane), I have my eye on the next time Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes on sale. A friend who never plays anything other than WoW loved playing Larian’s newest with me and I’m trying to get her to pick this up. Pretty sure...

Years and years ago I got partway through Dragon Quest XI on the PC, and then got sidetracked and started something else.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I had a hankering to get back into it, but the Definitive Edition has released since I last played it and I’d kinda like to play that version instead. But I’m not about to pay $40 for a game I basically already own, so I’m holding off and waiting for a sale.

Other than that, Super Mario Wonder. It’s a fool’s errand to wait for a Nintendo sale, but I guess I’m a fool.

Does anyone know any Hard Sci Fi books about humans surviving without any hospitable worlds?

I’m looking to get inspiration for my own writing. I need a hard sci fi series where earth (and earthlike worlds) are too rare, inaccessible, and/or previously spoiled beyond ability to sustain life. Bonus points if it is set on a multi-generational space station or starship without any other options and goes into detail about...

You might want to check out Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers. The book is about the people of the Exodus Fleet, a group of multi-generation ships that left Earth years ago. Even though the fleet eventually found other planets for them to live on, many are content to continue living out in space. It’s a neat little slice of life book about this community doing their part to keep these ships going.

Small dragons, big dragons, even radioactive dragons.

I've recently turned 20. What highly specific advice you, lemmy users, would offer me?

A lot of people answering this struggle to understand what highly-specific means. I’m looking to, for the sake of experiment, highly-specific advice that gives a reader clear understanding of what they should do. Unlike the vague advice, on the contrary, that may be too abstract to get implementing it right away....

When it comes to buying furniture: Get secondhand furniture handed down by relatives, or found at thrift stores, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, garage sales, whatever. It’s more eco-friendly to buy stuff that already exists, it’ll probably cost less than brand-new furniture, and the older stuff is sturdier than anything you’re going to get at Ikea.

With the money you save buying secondhand tables and drawers and such, buy a GOOD brand new mattress. You can cheap out on a lot of furniture, but never cheap out on a mattress. Decades from now, your back will thank you.

A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs - This is one of my favorite podcasts, but I’m going to warn you it’s not for everybody. The creator of this show, Andrew Hickey, is THOROUGH. A great example is the most reason episode about Hey Jude. Either you will love the concept of a 3.5-hour episode where 80% of the podcast is not about the song but rather the circumstances and lives of The Beatles, Yoko Ono, and the late 1960s music scene leading up to the creation of Hey Jude, or you will be furious that so much of the episode is about stuff that isn’t the song.

I got Rhythm Heaven Fever for the Wii when it first came out and just couldn’t get it. I mean, I understood what I was supposed to be doing, but I could barely pass any of the songs. I figured I just didn’t have any rhythm and put it on the shelf.

Fast-forward to 2020 when I was rearranging some stuff and came across Rhythm Heaven Fever again. I hooked my Wii back up for shits and giggles and started playing and was doing great. Either I had magically gained a sense of rhythm or (most likely) the TV I had been playing on when I first got the game had some sort of latency issue.

Now I’ve gone through all the Rhythm Heaven games, but Fever is still my hands-down favorite. I put a copy on my Steam Deck and sometimes I just load it up and play through some songs when I have a few minutes to kill.

Usually it meant finding websites with similar interests and banding together. You might form a webring, or trade banners with an affiliate site, or have community-voted top 100 lists, etc.

In 2000 I had a website about the then-current animated series X-Men Evolution, and I remember getting emails from other people who ran X-Men Evolution fansites and we would link back to each other. Eventually enough X-Men Evolution websites sprung up that one of those Top 100 list pages* sprung up to rank all of us. Clicking on my banner would result in a vote for me. I don’t think I was ever the #1 page, but I remember being in the top 5-10.

*if you have no idea what I’m talking about or are too young to remember these, they were EVERYWHERE in the early 2000s for many different subjects and fandoms. I don’t really miss the era of the Top 100 lists, because they could be easily gamed just like SEO (emulation sites were notorious for this). But I spent many hours of my teenage summer vacations finding a subject matter I liked, like Pokémon, and just going down the list and exploring.

Are phone notification LEDs still a thing?

Looking at all the features that older phones uses to have compared to newer ones, I never hear anyone talk about the removal of the notification LED. Never forget: If a company doesn’t want you to have it, it’s probably a good for you.

How long did you have to wait before retaking your drivers test?

Im pretty confident in driving abilities for taking the test this week with nearly two months of driving with someone else. My only real issue with taking my drivers test is that its my understanding sometimes DMVs have a secret everyone fails once policy, or some instructors do. I’m mainly wondering on average in the US low...

FullOfBallooons ,
@FullOfBallooons@leminal.space avatar

I failed my first time. The instructor never told me why I failed, so I have no idea what I needed to improve on. I remember thinking it MUST be the parallel parking section, so I asked my dad to take me out to the DMV so I could spend an hour or two perfecting my parallel parking.

I scheduled a second test for the next Sunday. Little did I realize this was Super Bowl Sunday. The instructor I got that time around was very chill and just told me to drive through a nearby neighborhood a few times so we could wrap things up quickly. I was never even asked to parallel park.

All of this to say that I don’t think the DMV has a secret failing policy, but I can guarantee you that some instructors take it more seriously than others.

Might be one of my favorite modern music videos (assuming you count a decade-old music video as “modern”).

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

FullOfBallooons ,
@FullOfBallooons@leminal.space avatar

For me it’s usually about availability. If someone suggests I try out a cool game that came out in the 80s, there’s a pretty good chance piracy is the only way to play it. Sure, you can pay way too much on Ebay to get a physical copy, and I have a fair collection of retro games, but it’s not like the money from Ebay sales go back to the original creators.

Same with movies. The version of Star Wars I grew up with, the one without all the digitally added stuff since the late 90s, isn’t on Disney+. If Disney announced a nice blu-ray Star Wars collection that featured the copies without Jedi Rocks and the extra aliens in the cantina and whatever, I’d go out and get it. But they haven’t, so I stick to the fan-made ‘despecialized editions’.

I don’t pirate from the little guy. I buy albums on Bandcamp and indie games on Steam all the time. I want the small creators to be able to eat. But I’m also fortunate enough to have a little disposable income. I know some people pirate as much as they can, and while I don’t entirely agree with it, I don’t know their financial situation (or the availability of these things in their country), so it’s not really my place to judge them.

I’d go back to the beginning of 2019. I don’t want to backtrack too far, but this would give me enough time to sell the house, move, and get situated before covid and the price of everything going crazy.

But it’s not just about that, it’s about repairing a relationship with a loved one while I still can.
