They were almost certainly migrants, because the child labor issue is mostly an immigration issue.

Are you making the ludicrous suggestion that the Democratic Party of 1866 is the same as the one today?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s pretty obvious that if the Democratic Party changed that drastically, the person you replied to would change their opinion. They are saying that because, at present, Republicans are far, far more dangerous.

Also, Democrats have been championing civil rights since JFK. Saying 1960 was not that long ago is silly. Suffering that 1866, which is when the poster you posted was made, is not that long ago when it comes to American politics is not even rational.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Who said forever?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Clearly just to upset you personally. No one else seems to have this issue.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Do you take everything everyone says absolutely literally? That must make things very hard for you.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

“Blue MAGA” is not a thing and there is not a chance you’ll turn it into one.

FlyingSquid ,

You literally just called me a bigot in another thread.

When Dr. Ruth Westheimer was just 9 years old, her father was taken away by the Gestapo. It was a week after Kristallnacht. Her mother was able to get her to safety in Switzerland a year later, but both of her parents were murdered in the Holocaust. Her father died at Auschwitz and there is no record of what happened to her mother.

Also, while you would never have expected this of her, she was trained as a sniper in the Israeli military (she never saw combat).

From Wikipedia:

Of this experience, she said, “I never killed anybody, but I know how to throw hand grenades and shoot.”[28] She became an ace sniper, and learned to assemble a rifle in the dark.[22][12] When she was 90 years old, she demonstrated that she was still able to put together a Sten gun with her eyes closed.[29]

(Sorry, there does not appear to be video of that bit at the end.)

Yes, she was a Zionist, but I can’t really blame her after what she went through and I never heard her advocate for any sort of mistreatment of Palestinians.

More importantly, she helped destigmatize sex in America and gave people a way to ask very frank sexual questions and get professional advice, rather than from Penthouse Forum or whatever. It helped that she didn’t in any way fit into society’s beauty standards for a woman- it showed that any kind of person could have an active and fulfilling sex life. She was also a very early advocate for AIDS research and was a major advocate for legalized abortion.

So she was a complicated person with a tragic past, but I think she left the world in a better place and I am glad she did so.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Technically, her first name isn’t Ruth either. It’s her middle name. She was born Karola Ruth Siegel.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Take care of your fucking kids, asshole.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, that sounds like something the NICU would lie about. “We didn’t like them, so we didn’t get their legal consent.”

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Presumably something about the Hospital having a fringe on the flag in the lobby had something to do with it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Good thing the big evil government can’t read newspapers, am I right?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That makes sense. It’s hard to foment an insurrection or race massacre when most of your loyal soldiers don’t use Truth Social.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

FlyingSquid ,

Just because Israel is committing horrific crimes in Gaza doesn’t mean that Hamas is good. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” is the a big part of the reason why the US is allied with Israel in the first place.

Hamas was bad for the people Gaza, which is exactly why Netanyahu enabled and supported them in the first place.

thenation.com/…/why-netanyahu-bolstered-hamas/

Obviously, Israel is far worse for the people of both Gaza and the West Bank, but Israel’s genocide and their apartheid does not make Hamas good and their idea of Palestinian liberation is a theocratic form of “liberation” that should not be supported.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a different issue entirely. I was responding to the person that claims they are a national liberation movement. They aren’t, because a theocracy is not liberation. Maybe they are Palestine’s only hope right now, but that doesn’t mean they are good, that means that no one who should be fighting for Palestine is doing so.

I assume no one here would be calling ISIS a national liberation movement if they were the only ones fighting Israel. At least I hope not.

Columbia Law Professor Smeared by Israel Supporters Could Lose Her Job (theintercept.com)

The university recently deposed tenured law professor Katherine Franke as part of an investigation stemming from an interview she gave to “Democracy Now!” in January. During that interview, Franke was asked about allegations that two students who had previously served in the Israeli army had sprayed a chemical at their...

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Can we avoid, even jokingly, accommodating the Zionists by saying anti-Israel and antiisemitism are the same thing when they absolutely aren’t?

Dr. Franke was not antisemitic and actual antisemitic stuff is happening in the U.S. that gets a lot less attention. Many don’t know about this and many more probably dismissed it. A few even justified it as a protest against Israeli genocide despite many of the graves being of Jews who died before Israel even existed as a nation.

www.cnn.com/2024/07/02/us/…/index.html

Zionists are helping to normalize that sort of thing by desensitizing people to the concept of antisemitism. The fact is that there are people, sometimes very dangerous people, who hate Jews because they are Jews and that should not be minimized any more than Israeli genocide should be minimized because they are both things that no one should tolerate.

Letting them control your language is the opposite of calling them out. It’s letting them win.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

In what possible way?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I am in no way doing that. Why are you making such a nonsensical accusation when I explained why I said whst I did in great detail?

Refusing to let them win the propaganda war by policing your language does not in any way do that.

You’re basically accusing me of being a bigot by saying that a word that should describe bigotry is being used to describe things that are not bigoted to support a genocide.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

In one thread you’re complaining about me not being civil and in this one you’re calling me a bigot. Who am I even being bigoted against? Antisemites?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

More stupid because the mother or child could have died without immediate medical attention if something had gone wrong.

Plenty of hospitals will accommodate something akin to a home birth setup where a woman can choose to give birth without any painkillers or an episiotomy and will even often allow midwives and doulas to attend. They just make sure the woman is in an environment where both her or her baby’s lives could potentially be saved in the event of something catastrophic.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It so often seems to be about either fucking over their kid directly or fucking over their kid by refusing to pay child support.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I wouldn’t be shocked considering how many “how do I get out of child support” SovCit posts I’ve seen.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sure. You’re going to pay for it, since we can’t afford to, and find my wife and I new jobs when we get there, right?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Or, worse, realize that a black person’s life has value.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Antarctica? So far?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That does make sense. And also, it explains why black soldiers were specifically excluded from the GI Bill after WWII.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s you that seems to hate your country so much.

Acknowledging the shame of America’s racist past is a way to make it better. I suppose we should also ignore Dr. King since he addressed this shame?

That’s the thing about America, you can get a better job, save up, and move

What America are you talking about? People can’t even afford to move to other parts of the U.S.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I guess that depends on whether or not you think it’s acceptable to kill off a race you genetically engineered to serve you.

Dude, just accept that a lot of people here thought your joke was crass and offensive.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Probably not in any way that wouldn’t involve malicious compliance like putting them on a special bigotry display. They would have to write a law so long and with so many specificities that it would be virtually impossible. Maybe if they actually listed the “acceptable” books by name and said that they could not be mocked?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That wouldn’t shock me since they’re already presenting lists of books that should be banned, but putting a list of the names of all of the approved books into law would be so unprecedented in terms of a first amendment violation that I don’t even think the SCOTUS we have now would be okay with it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure why you think that means the market for realistic prop guns is worth the cost of redesign and recalibration and possibly the purchase of new equipment.

Only a few companies make those movies, so they only need a limited stock of those weapons, especially since they can be reused. Most movies don’t require them.

Also, I can find absolutely nothing to corroborate your claim that movies were America’s biggest export in the 1980s. They aren’t even in the top 10 now, so I doubt it.

www.evansdist.com/americas-top-10-exports/

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Possibly, although there’s also Republican deputy whip Mike Crapo.

There’s also Markwayne Mullin, who has a very stupid first name. Also a Republican.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

At least that kind of makes some sense. It looks needlessly difficult, but you can at least see how someone who isn’t certifiably insane would mash those two games up.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You either keep yourself in the headspace where your character is shooting a loaded gun and you give a good performance, or you do firearm safety checks. It can’t be both. Maybe you’ve never done any acting, but it really can’t be both.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Again, not if you want a good performance. And I am guessing your acting did not involve shooting a realistic weapon on a realistic set in a major motion picture.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I am speaking from my experience of working on multiple film sets.

I guess, unlike cops, they don’t base their sense of justice on where or not they agree with someone’s politics.

China tells NATO not to create chaos in Asia and rejects label of 'enabler' of Russia's Ukraine war (apnews.com)

China accused NATO on Thursday of seeking security at the expense of others and told the alliance not to bring the same “chaos” to Asia, a reflection of its determination to oppose strengthening ties between NATO members and Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea and the Philippines....

You seem to be deliberately conflating what a Chinese company is doing and what the government of China is doing.
