Thank goodness the Weather Girls were around to give a warning about it, although only within about a 12-hour window.

Either way, if Biden ordered it, it’s fine unless congress removes him from office.

Exactly.

On the other hand, I can totally see a future Republican president digging up Biden’s corpse and putting it on trial like he was the Pope.

Or at least it would have to be shown to not be an official act. And since taking classified documents home with you and showing them around to people after your presidential term is over may or may not be an official act, all bets seem to be off.

Hopefully not the character she played in Heathers… although she was great in that movie.

Today it only takes the smallest of gestures to show you are proud to be Jewish. Put a sign in front of your house. Wear a Star of David necklace or a dog tag for the hostages. Speak up when someone criticizes Israel. Go to a synagogue. Celebrate Shabbat with your family. Because we have something much sweeter and far more precious than anything else in the world.

I am a Jew. I am proud of being a Jew. I will tell anyone who asks that I’m a Jew. Sometimes I will tell them if I am not asked.

I do absolutely none of those things and I wouldn’t ever do the ones that involve supporting Israel.

I do speak up. Against people like this author who suggest that I’m not enough of a Jew if I don’t support Israel.

Court cases maybe. Actual cases of espionage and treason, far less likely.

I guarantee you that MAGA people will claim that he registered as a Republican as part of a big conspiracy that involves Biden personally sending him to kill Trump (which they won’t realize is arguably acceptable unless he is impeached and removed from office according to SCOTUS).

Sure, but even if that didn’t come out, he’d be a secret librul.

I don’t know, but I do know I’d kill Donald Regan to prove my love for Lisa Foster.

Why it’s only the funniest TV show ever made!

It’s Too Hot to Fly Helicopters and That’s Killing People (gizmodo.com)

Six motorcyclists rode into Death Valley National Park on July 6. Only five came out alive. With temperatures reaching 128 degrees Fahrenheit in California, the cyclists faced extreme heat exposure that killed one and sent another to a local hospital, according to the National Park Service....

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right about the wording, but I’d say that a four out of five survival rate when it comes to a group of motorcyclists and heat death isn’t really great odds.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Death Valley is not going to be the only place where this is an issue. It could even be an issue where you live at the height of summer.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

No probably about it.

FlyingSquid OP ,

tho medical transports will suffer, yes.

Putting that at the end like it’s an afterthought when it’s one of the biggest problems is ridiculous. Someone already died because of this problem. It’s going to continue to be a problem where people will die because of that. I’m not sure why you think that isn’t a big deal.

Also, I grew up in the state I’m living in now after not living here for a decade. The difference in summer heat is not minor. We never used to have summers this hot for this long when I was a kid. We had a week last month where the temperature was above 95 every day. Also true for this week. Temperatures in the 90s in June were enough news to make the paper beyond the weather section when I was a kid.

The sun’s only been up for an hour and it’s already 76 degrees. Again, that is not even close to normal when I was growing up. So telling me that it hasn’t changed all that much in the last 70 years when I’ve experienced that change myself over less than 50 is not especially convincing.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

No, medical transports are one of the biggest problems of helicopters not being able to fly due to climate change, something you mentioned at the very end.

And if the rest of your post wasn’t about “it won’t be too hot for a helicopter most of the time,” I’m not sure what the point was.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think your prediction is a coin toss. It’s based on your emotions, not on evidence.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

As I said to someone else- that is the literal definition of a martyr, not the political concept of a martyr. The latter is what matters. There are plenty of examples of political martyrs who survived and did well because of it. The most prominent right now is the House Majority Leader, Steve Scalise, who survived the mass shooter at the congressional baseball game a few years ago and has been riding that sympathy wave ever since.

Why the fuck are you defending cops persecuting people for swearing at them?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You do know that there is literally nothing a black person in South Carolina can do to stop a cop from arresting or attacking them if they feel like it, right? They can be sitting on a park bench reading a book and a cop will find a reason to abuse them because the South is filled with racist cops.

There’s a reason why “driving while black” is a phrase all over the country, but in the South it’s especially true.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Similarly, I used to have one of these-

If someone in the maternity ward had come up to me after my daughter was born and asked me if I consented to a blood test, I’d think it was a really weird thing to ask consent for, which is probably why no one asked as far as I remember (maybe it was buried in a bunch of legalese or something). Has a baby ever suffered any sort of grievous harm from a blood test? It’s like asking for consent to wash the kid after it’s born. No one asked us for consent to do that either, which is probably good because neither of us were exactly in the right mind to think about such things what with me seeing something with 50% of my DNA coming out of my wife’s body and her suffering through something with 50% of her DNA coming out of her body.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The best out of a bunch of bad things isn’t a good thing.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Nice whataboutism, but no, aiding a genocide is also not a good thing.

Believe it or not, there doesn’t need to be a good side and a bad side to everything.

Israel is bad. Hamas is bad. The U.S. is bad. All of these things can be true without any contradictions.

You can call them freedom fighters or whatever you like. They are still theocrats who want a theocracy that will oppress the Palestinian people.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Why on Earth would you believe a bunch of theocrats? They didn’t hold an election for decades. Most Palestinians in Gaza weren’t even old enough to vote, if they were even alive, when Hamas last held an election. And no, that’s not Israel’s fault. Israel, despite all of the horrible things they were doing in Gaza, never did anything to prevent Hamas from holding an election. They didn’t because they don’t want democracy, they want a theocracy. Just read their charter.

Again, fighting Israel doesn’t make you good. It just makes you a group fighting a bad thing. Similarly, the Azov Brigade is fighting for Ukrainian freedom from Russia, but they’re still a bunch of Nazis, and I am sure that the Jewish president of Ukraine is not happy about having to work with them. He’s doing it anyway because they’re necessary to fight Russia. They aren’t suddenly good just because they are helping Ukraine fight for their freedom.

Iran might go into a fight with Israel. Are you going to start praising Iran if that happens?

FlyingSquid , (edited )
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sorry, you’re praising them for something they haven’t even done and saying that’s why they’re good. That’s ludicrous. Promises on paper are worth as much as that paper they’re printed on. Ask any indigenous American.

And normalized South Africa? What the fuck are you talking about? apnews.com/…/south-africa-election-anc-decline-cf…

A birthing center is also a far safer alternative to a home birth. Probably just as safe as a hospital, if not safer due to the staff being more specialized (I’m not sure which has a better safety record in that regard). The point is, medical professionals need to be around just in case.

[META] A few words about Bots and Civility

Given the state of technology, politics, and social media, we all share fears about interacting with bots, or having our social media manipulated. We know that this is happening on other platforms that are driven by engagement/profit models. However, Lemmy is about people – like you! While this platform is not immune to bots,...

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sorry to hear that and that really sucks. I didn’t spend that long apart from my wife, but I did move to L.A. for 6 months back before you could do anything like video chat, texting was 10 cents a text, and even long distance was still more expensive than local calls. We did it because I got a job, but my wife had to finish graduate school. I did get to see her on a couple of trips- once her to me and once me to her, but air travel is expensive and driving three days there and back was not really a good option, so mostly it was just emails.

I’m glad we survived it and are still married and didn’t have to reconnect afterward like on a long deployment, but it also helped that we had been married for 5 or 6 years before I moved and had been dating since high school. I got lucky and found the right person, but I know that we’re a real rarity.

You’re saying that the U.S. wants Germany to be attacked by Russia? Really?
