The man fought for his country and his country murdered him in return.

What an absolutely disgusting history we have.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sure. You’re going to pay for it, since we can’t afford to, and find my wife and I new jobs when we get there, right?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Would they get paid better? Because we might have more teachers.

Lots of teachers have to take summer temp jobs to make up for how little they’re paid.

The rich party away while the world burns…

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

But I’m told the rich are job creators and the money will trickle down! I’m sure that $450,000,000 will trickle down any century now.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

My wife is a librarian here in Indiana and they’ve already tried passing a law like this once, so I don’t have any doubts they will try again and it’s terrifying.

FlyingSquid ,

They’re coming for you even then if you aren’t rich.

It is a slightly amusing irony that this necessarily includes any books that tell kids that homosexuality is evil and wrong.

Nibling is a gender-neutral term used to refer to a child of one’s sibling as a replacement for “niece” or “nephew”. The word is thought to have been coined in the early 1950s, but was relatively obscure for several decades before being revived in recent years.

Huh. TIL. Thanks.

Making prop weapons do not have to be of inferior quality

They do if no one is willing to make them better. You can’t force a manufacturer to do that, especially when you’re talking about a very small number of sales.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly how big do you think the global market for such props is?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

“The media industry” is everything from a big-budget science fiction film, which uses no conventional-looking weapons at all, to a local newscast, which also doesn’t.

The number of productions worldwide needing realistic-looking prop weapons is very unlikely going to make any manufacturer justify redesigning their arms or recalibrating their manufacturing equipment, if recalibration is all that is necessary and new equipment wouldn’t also be required.

The stupidest man in the senate speaks his mind once again.

And I hate it that everyone calls him “coach” deferentially. They should all tell him to go fuck himself, especially when that’s the only reason he’s in the Senate at all.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I thought it couldn’t get lower than Curb Your Enthusiasm Monopoly.

Yes, it’s real. They found a way to take everything good and funny out of that show and squeeze it out and put the rest down as a board game.

They fucked up so badly, Elon Musk was right for once.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That wouldn’t shock me, but he was right that Signal was not addressing a known vulnerability. In fact, denying that it even was a vulnerability.

For what it’s worth, I trust Telegram even less than Signal. And at least Signal seems to be finally doing something about the problem.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure why you think anyone would want a messenger that touts itself for its encryption to not encrypt things.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Then it’s weird they are fixing it now. Why aren’t they insisting this doesn’t need to be dealt with because it was a feature, not a bug?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Or I’m just speaking my mind and you don’t agree.

And aren’t you picking as fight with me right now?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Did they make an intentional design choice which users should have been okay with like you said the first time or is this a feature users wanted? It can’t be both.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Either way, it’s not the doctor, who’s probably in crippling student loan debt. And this doctor looks young enough to have a huge amount of it.

FlyingSquid ,

Yes, cops are big fans of the famously left-wing Alec Baldwin.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I keep trying to explain that to people too. The whole point of having an on-set armorer is so the actor can stay in their headspace and not have to worry about checking to see if a gun is loaded with live ammo when their character is supposed to assume it is.

[META] A few words about Bots and Civility

Given the state of technology, politics, and social media, we all share fears about interacting with bots, or having our social media manipulated. We know that this is happening on other platforms that are driven by engagement/profit models. However, Lemmy is about people – like you! While this platform is not immune to bots,...

A couple of years ago, before the AI boom, a guy on Reddit was absolutely convinced (to the point that he started Reddit stalking me over it) that I was a rogue AI. At one point, I even took a photo of myself (censoring my face obviously) holding up a napkin with his username written on it in sharpie. He said it was photoshopped.

My point is that once you make this sort of accusation about someone, the conversation is basically over. They’ll never convince you that you’re wrong and there’s no point in talking to them if you’re right.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You obviously should have written a sonnet.

FlyingSquid OP ,

They did not. Cuneiform was Mesopotamian. Egypt used hieroglyphics and something you might not be familiar with known as demotic script.

And what humans did with our limited, non-alien brains is pretty damn amazing.

The Ancient Egyptians, as far as we know, invented the pulley. But somehow they were too primitive to drag around blocks of stone if they just had a whole lot of people pulling on them- although they were non-primitive enough to put them on a sledge and wet the area in front of that sledge to make the ground smoother and slicker.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/3663cbaa-f4e9-4f99-b9b6-6f786e85fcfe.png

It sort of seems like they had the same brains as our brains that came up with all of this modern technology. And, considering these Ancient Aliens folks seem to think aliens created us, brains and all, you’d think they would see it that way.

First of all, the tax is 18-24p per litre. No one is denying their children sodas because they can’t afford to pay that.

Secondly, there are a vast number of exceptions. These kids could be getting the sugar you seem to think is necessary for their lives from juice or powdered drinks, which can be just as sugary, if not more so, than sodas. And the latter are usually cheaper.

gov.uk/…/check-if-your-drink-is-liable-for-the-so…

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Telling someone they should give up something that’s bad for them is not stopping them from doing it.

The person you replied to is not stopping anyone from drinking soda and, as long as you have an extra 25p, no one is stopping anyone in Britain from drinking a litre of the most sugary of sodas.

I don’t know that 37 hours of drifting in a swim ring in the middle of the ocean would be interesting. Terrifying, sure, but also just mind-numbingly boring after a while. Just waiting there to either be rescued or die. And obviously she wouldn’t want to hurry things along in case rescue came, so she just had to float there. For 37 hours. Hoping it wouldn’t be her last 37 hours. No one wants a slow and lingering death.

Also, he just says he’s autistic. As far as is known, he’s never actually gotten an evaluation.

So he’s not just using autism as an excuse, he might not even have autism. And he wouldn’t, sadly, be the first to pretend he did to excuse his behavior.

China tells NATO not to create chaos in Asia and rejects label of 'enabler' of Russia's Ukraine war (apnews.com)

China accused NATO on Thursday of seeking security at the expense of others and told the alliance not to bring the same “chaos” to Asia, a reflection of its determination to oppose strengthening ties between NATO members and Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea and the Philippines....

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I see. You’re just going to pretend that China selling to a third party and that third party then selling to Ukraine is the same thing as China selling directly to Russia.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And, again, they are not buying those drones directly from China.

If North Korea sells me a missile and I sell it to you, you are not buying arms from North Korea and North Korea is not selling arms to you.

Sorry, I’m just so used to the frequent whataboutism. I understand what you’re saying now.

I haven’t been a teenager since the 1990s, so I’ve never used TikTok. I think you can figure out the answer to your question from there.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

As long as you think most of the reviews for drones on AliExpress real, China is definitely selling the same dual use items of all kinds to Ukraine as it is to Russia, and I’m sure at the same price too.

Logic.

Mike Lindell's MyPillow facing another eviction notice in Shakopee (www.startribune.com)

Darryl Anderson was drunk behind the wheel of his Audi SUV, had his accelerator pressed to the floor and was barreling toward a car ahead of him when he snapped a photo of his speedometer. The picture showed a car in the foreground, a collision warning light on his dashboard and a speed of 141 mph (227 kph)....

I’m guessing because you have standards and want to be with someone who actually cares about you and who you care about and who you share interests with beyond a cheap fuck.

Unfortunately, loneliness is a huge problem in our society and you are one of the many people who suffer from it, but this asshole is just as lonely. He’s just filling the loneliness gap with something he might as well pay for considering how much it really means to him in terms of being with another person.
