If they sell it as “for that fashionable sumo wrestler look,” they might be on to something…

That depends. Are they latkes like my mother makes them or are they edible latkes?

This happened in London in 2012 and I’m sure in other cities when they hosted the Olympics too. Get all those scary, icky homeless people out of the way so tourists don’t have to remember that poor people exist in Paris.

I can’t wait to hear what the pro-life SCOTUS will have to say about this when it gets appealed to them. Something along the lines of, “were you there to work or were you there to give birth?”

Important part below the preview:

AT&T said the hacked data did not include the content of calls and text messages. At this point, the exposed data is not believed to be publicly available.

Still bad, but it could have been far worse.

That said, I would bet that if this hasn’t already happened to most other carriers and it hasn’t been made public yet, it will happen soon enough.

Unfortunately, I will not be at all surprised if right-wing outlets take that headline and run with it as a general criticism of Medicaid.

It’s an irresponsible way to word a headline if they want to avoid that.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t even imply such a thing, so I have no idea where you got that from.

Are you under the bizarre impression that there is no article, just a headline?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is not about what is a bigger concern. I can’t speak for you, but most people can be concerned about more than one thing. In my case, one of those things was that I feel, and others apparently agree, that it is a headline which will be used as anti-Medicaid propaganda.

Why that doesn’t concern you, I don’t know. It should considering how effective propaganda has been throughout pretty much all of human history.

Similarly, child “treatment” programs are using improper restraints on children all the time. I’m not talking about overtly abusive places like the Elan School, I’m talking about places that supposedly get regular health and DCS inspections.

This is one in my town and it is in no way unusual if you look at reviews for such facilities.

mywabashvalley.com/…/former-worker-claims-mistrea…

The allegations include complaints that restraint holds are used on children, not because the kids are a threat to themselves or others, but as a form of retribution.

Sallee says he witnessed a restraint of a 10 year old boy. The supervisors he observed restraining the child did not use a child restraint.

Instead, Sallee says two grown men, one weighing close to 300 pounds put their body weight on the child’s back and legs.

“I noticed his breathing was irregular, he could barely speak because they were suffocating him,” Sallee said.

Sallee says the supervisors twisted the boys arms and informed him that he was being restrained because he was going to attempt to flee the facility in the snow without a coat or shoes.

Sallee observed the child was wearing both.

And no, DCS didn’t do shit. They had them do an internal investigation:

After reporting what he saw to the department of child services and reaching out to the media, Sallee says Gibault conducted an internal investigation.

The two employees were suspended.

I sat down with a former co-worker who was hesitant to come forward and asked to remain anonymous.

I was told that the employees’ suspension was brief and they did return to Gibault.

China tells NATO not to create chaos in Asia and rejects label of 'enabler' of Russia's Ukraine war (apnews.com)

China accused NATO on Thursday of seeking security at the expense of others and told the alliance not to bring the same “chaos” to Asia, a reflection of its determination to oppose strengthening ties between NATO members and Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea and the Philippines....

Oh, well, if there are reviews they must be doing it. No one can possibly fake a review.

FlyingSquid ,

NATO members give Israel weapons to conduct a genocide therefore it’s okay if China is complicit in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine where they are conducting a genocide.

I see. Genocide is fine as long as two genocides cancel each other out.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s talking about DJI drones.

You can buy them on Amazon.

That is not the same as China selling directly to Russia and I think you know that.

Also, I explicitly want dual use stuff because that’s explicitly how they are being accused of aiding Russia.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Go back and re-read the first comment you replied to and then ask yourself if asking me that question now makes any sense.

And, again, Ukraine buying DJI drones on the public market is not the same as China directly selling Russia parts to make or repair weapons, which, again, I think you know.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ukraine literally praises the Chinese dual-use items that they received (drones, etc.) and calls them far superior to Western equivalents.

Please show them praising the ones the received directly from China rather than bought through a third party.

Mike Lindell's MyPillow facing another eviction notice in Shakopee (www.startribune.com)

The end is a wee bit scary though-

Lindell recently told the podcast War Room that he’s asked Trump to put him in charge of elections if he’s re-elected to a second term in November.

I wouldn’t exactly be shocked if Trump said yes.

I use Mint and I like it. It does everything I need it to do.

What keeps people away from Linux, or at least it helped keep me away, were people arguing with each other about distros like a mini-OS war within the OS wars and it makes the whole thing sound like it’s a lot more trouble than it’s worth.

Yes, I think allowing yourself to be raped just so you can survive can be a fate worse than death for some people.

Voluntary sex work is fine. Allowing yourself to be raped- and yes, it is rape if you are doing it out of desperation- just to survive is horrific.

FlyingSquid OP ,

I love that movie.

I have a dream. It’s not a big dream, it’s just a little dream. My dream - and I hope you don’t find this too crazy - is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can’t have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, “Whatever you do, don’t call the fire department!” That would be bad.

Because, as they said, this is something they have done many, many times in the past.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m pretty sure, based on the Marx I have read, that a pillar of Marxism and communism is that the workers control the means of production, but you have taught me that what is meant by “the workers control the means of production” is “one multibillionaire controls the means of production for tens of thousands of workers.” So thank you, I had no idea that all this time, the U.S. was a communist country too.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

He doesn’t control it. He administers it on behalf of the workers’ state.

Now that’s just nonsense:

Zhong Shanshan (Chinese: 钟睒睒; pinyin: Zhōng Shǎnshǎn, born 1954) is a Chinese entrepreneur.

He is the founder and chairperson of the Nongfu Spring beverage company and the majority owner of Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise.[1]

As of 2022, he was ranked the wealthiest person in China, garnering a net worth of $62.3 billion.[2][3] His source of wealth is derived mainly from his business stakes and interests in the Chinese beverage and pharmaceutical industries.[4]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhong_Shanshan

He literally earned $5 billion in one day and became the sixth-richest person in the world because his company became publicly traded.

web.archive.org/…/chinas-bottled-water-mogul-gain…

Entrepreneurship and buying and selling stocks, publicly traded companies… Things China didn’t have for decades back when it was apparently less communist (who knew Mao was so non-communist), but which the U.S. also has now.

Once again, sure sounds like the U.S. is just as communist as China.

But hey, I’m sure the fewer than 300 billionaires in China with their over $4 trillion in wealth back in 2020 have distributed it all to the workers now, right?

cnbc.com/…/chinas-billionaires-see-biggest-gains-…

Or is hoarding wealth also a big part of what makes a country a communist one?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Who controls Zhong Shanshan? The Communist Party

Prove it.

If he breaks the rules he gets punished harshly, if he tried to flee the country his Capital would be seized.

Which… also happens in capitalist countries.

So, let’s review all of the features of communist countries we have discussed so far:

  • Wealth-hoarding billionaires
  • Publicly-traded companies on a global stock market
  • Workers making a fraction of what the owners of those publicly-traded companies make
  • Those workers not controlling the means of production
  • The ability to bake over $5 billion in a day
  • Laws that punish people by seizing their capital
  • Capital

Wait a second… you said something…

his Capital would be seized.

Capital… capital… where have I heard that word?

Oh right!

Another feature of communist countries:

  • Capitalism

But the government is very popular with the workers. Unless you’re a Tibetan or a Uyghur worker. I’ll give you that.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Got it. As long as China eliminates the multi-billionaires and private companies within the next three billion years, it will not be a capitalist country.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I don’t think I need to argue with you on every single point since you’ve made it explicitly clear that capitalism is a feature of communism.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve read Capital and the Communist Manifesto, which is why I know that billionaires who hoard money and own controlling interests in publicly traded corporations is a feature of capitalism, and also why I know that China didn’t used to have such things.

But to hear you and others tell it, China was more capitalist under Mao than it is today.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I will not continue this discussion with you until you show me where I said China was “majority Han.”

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ah yes, good intentions. I seem to remember something about a road being associated with those.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes! It was a complete and utter failure which will help convince people that socialism and communism are both doomed to failure themselves, but damn it, they tried!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, right, a communist country is one where there are non-state owned enterprises that people can get rich investing in.

Generating capital is definitely a feature of communism as long as it’s fictitious capital. That’s why Donald Trump is a communist.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Again, I’ve read Marx and you’re putting words in my mouth.

And again, Marx did not in any way advocate for an aristocracy that own private capital (call it fictitious if you like, China does not) and run publicly traded corporations where the workers do not own the means of production. That was literally everything he was fighting against.

There is simply nothing communist about an aristocracy. You can say “read Marx” all you like. Marx was 100% against such things. I know because I read Marx.

By the way, some of those private companies are real estate companies that rent property to Chinese workers for a profit. And if I just read Marx, I’ll know he was in favor of such arrangements.

I’m sure Marx would never write anything like:

You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society private property is already done away with for nine-tenths of the population; its existence for the few is solely due to its non-existence in the hands of those nine-tenths. You reproach us, therefore, with intending to do away with a form of property, the necessary condition for whose existence is the non-existence of any property for the immense majority of society.

In one word, you reproach us with intending to do away with your property. Precisely so: that is just what we intend.

That’s clearly some Westen imperialist capitalist scum who thinks that way.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

…and we’ve come to whataboutism.

And apparently the two options, according to what you are arguing, are be capitalists or fail at doing something else but have good intentions and then be capitalists anyway.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

We? Are you the Chinese government? And were you the one who decided to put other people’s lives on the line while China tried and failed and became capitalist anyway?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Are you ever going to show me where I claimed China was majority Han or was that trolling?

I’ve been waiting for an answer and have given you multiple opportunities. I hope for your sake that it wasn’t trolling, because you have one more chance to justify it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I see, so humanity tried communism and failed and therefore the 45 million people who died in China’s Great Leap Forward’s deaths were justified. Because China meant well.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You’re doing an argument from emotion followed by whataboutism. Any other fallacies you’d like to try out?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What on Earth does any of that have to do with your implication that the deaths of 45 million people was worth it due to good intentions?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar
