Without JS, you wouldn't have ad blockers and youtube could just bake their ads on the videos themselves while streaming them. Thinking about it, I don't think it's off the table for them.

Youtube controls the servers. The backend trumps all frontends.

Russia claims `neo-Nazis’ were at wake for Ukrainian soldier in village café where missile killed 52 (apnews.com)

Russia’s U.N. ambassador alleged Monday that “neo-Nazis” and military-age men were at the wake for a Ukrainian soldier in a village café where a missile last week killed 52 people, even as Security Council members retorted that Russia was responsible for starting the war and committing crimes....

DarkenLM ,

but a few JS-blocking users have complained about having a barebones experience.

Well no shit, have they ever wondered why the language was created in the first place?

DarkenLM ,

Playing the devil's advocate here, even IDEs like Visual Studio and IntelliJ have multiple times crashed on me or taken ages to update a single line on intellisense. C++ is simply a language where a dynamic LSP is everything but easy to make.

DarkenLM ,

Well, given the C projects I've worked on take hours just to compile, I think I can cut some slack for any IDE for being slow. Though I haven't used CLion a lot so I can't really speak from experience about it. Though VSCode is fast enough most of the times, and it usually only gets slower with nested macro fuckery and/or external library headers.

DarkenLM ,

Now we just need to invent a way to read the Void of Nothingness to retrieve the data and bam! Infinite storage.

Unfortunately, it's not like it would realistically change the monopoly Google has over the internet. The greatest financial backer of Mozilla is Alphabet and if Firefox starts to gain too much traction, they will simply axe Mozilla and unless they manage to get another backer fast, Alphabet will have THE monopoly over the Internet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm doing my part and using Firefox (when it doesn't constantly crash), but Alphabet's holding way too many strings currently for any change to happen.

DarkenLM ,

That's why I included the clause "if Firefox starts to gain too much traction". I agree that currently Firefox is no threat to Google, but if it starts to become, they will strike hard against it.

And unfortunately, antitrust investigations do little against the Titans of Big Tech, just look at what it (didn't) do to Microsoft.

DarkenLM ,

We can dream for the day where Alphabet finally loses it's monopoly. It will be a day to be remembered.

DarkenLM ,

One can hope.

DarkenLM ,

They test anything on everything because they can, not too surprising.

DarkenLM ,

To be fair, at the time games were made to target a single system, not a myriad of them.

DarkenLM ,

Unfortunately, for some projects, there just aren't as many options available right now, at least none that I know of.

DarkenLM ,

I've seen it, and it looks quite nice. Might give it a try if I ever get into game making. But some project that want to harness the full power of systems like Lumen, Niagara, Megascans, etc, don't have much of an alternative.

He made a rainbow and made light go straight. It's a sign that humanity should learn something for once and stop genociding everything they don't like.

DarkenLM ,

Except pranksters, those can rot in hell.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't algorithms like Huffman or even Shannon-Fano code with blocks already pack the files as efficiently as possible? It's impossible to compress a file beyond it's entropy, and those algorithms get pretty damn close to it.

DarkenLM ,

No need to be sorry, I am well aware I can be wrong, and I prefer to learn something new than being bashed for being wrong.

Maybe I phrased it in a way different than I thought about it. I didn't mean to claim that Shannon-Fano or Huffman are THE most efficient ways of doing it, but rather that comparing it to the massive overhead of running a LLM to compress a file, the current methods are way more resource efficient, even one as obsolete as Shannon-Fano codes.

I should probably have mentioned an algorithm like LZMA, or gzip, like you did.

DarkenLM ,

It's a time where you die for a few hours and wake up again if you're lucky.

DarkenLM ,

Say what you want about it, but it will not go down without using everything in the vicinity as a weapon if ammo runs out. While others go down, they will be kamikazeing themselves to get the job done.

DarkenLM ,

Well, we know that the simple fact of observing an event changes it (see the Double Slit experiment), so consciousness has to have some kind of link to reality itself, no?

We currently do not know what consciousness even is exactly, and we know only about the human consciousness, but there can be other degrees of consciousness within other particles in the universe.

And even if current-day experiments disprove something, that doesn't mean it will in the future, just like before Einstein's laws of relativity proved that gravity bends spacetime and that it is relative according to the point of observation.

And I'm sure people that study neuroscience ask this same question from time to time. It's a scientist's duty to find the factual truth about things, even if they disprove everything they know so far. We can't rule out something as impossible just because we haven't observed it yet, as it would directly contradict the scientific method, and therefore cease to be science.

DarkenLM ,

Well that's one way to start the day. This deserves a drink! Now where did I put the bleach?.

DarkenLM ,

Alright. I'll bring the watermelons. Make sure he can't see us!

Where do you fall politically?

I’m hoping this doesn’t start a fight, I’m just curious what the political orientation is of this community. I grew up in a liberal (in the American sense) family, and I identify now as a socialist, though a lot of the liberalism I grew up in has stuck with me, like interest in LGBTQ and women’s rights, environmentalism,...

Anarchism. Not the radical burn-the-world-to-ashes kind but rather the kind where power is given to the individuals as a whole and every one of them directly decides how society is shaped. A society with no authority that can turn to tyranny and where everyone's needs are satisfied and everyone contributes on the field they are best on (to each according to their needs, from each according to their ability).

DarkenLM ,

WIth some differences, but yes.

DarkenLM ,

According to the school of thought I follow, every individual on a society has a direct say on everything discussed. Rules, or laws, are defined through a consensus between every individual. If a single individual disagrees, provided they present valid arguments, then the rule must be expanded in a way everyone agrees with it.

On this society, everyone's basic needs are a core right that cannot be taken or restricted in any way, shape or form. That includes, but not restricted to, proper housing, including electricity and Internet, food and water infrastructure, education and healthcare. That explains the "to each according to their needs" part partially.
Having their needs, therefore their survival ensured, individuals can dedicate themselves to the field they prefer, ensuring no-one is stuck on a job they hate, they can at any point change, and society as a whole benefits from this liberty. Of course there are some fields that individuals with some kinds of disabilities physically cannot work on normally, but there can be jobs that are adapted to their condition, if possible. That covers the "from each according to their ability".

Those two statements allow for an economical reform. The basic needs of an individual are fulfilled from the get-go, but if they desire some other commodities, they can work for them. Money, if needed at all, would only be needed for those commodities, while favoring trading between individuals. Again, society as a whole would determine how much a product would be worth comparatively to others, creating something more akin to a measuring scale of worth rather than a currency.

DarkenLM ,

If I could, you can bet your ass I would.

If someone's pronouns are any/all, what should I use or how should I determine how to refer to you and what pronouns to use?

I want to be respectful but if they say they don’t care what pronouns I use for them, that feels like it puts the decision on me to choose what to call them and I guess I would probably default to “they” because choosing a gender for them feels weird… am I wrong?

DarkenLM ,

What in the name of fuck did I just watch lol

DarkenLM ,

So, a few years back, probably a bit more than a decade, there was one hell of a conflict on the village I lived, with gangs every corner and tensions rising. The police didn't do shit and crime was through the roof. One day, one of the gang leaders was murdered and a whole war between the gangs developed. And instead of fucking helping, the government decided to isolate the place, no one in and no one out, fuck the civilians. A week into this war, explosives were used to destroy buildings and spread chaos, both from the gangs and military alike. Me and my family hid wherever we could, but it was never enough to be safe for a long period of time. Three of my family members died during the first week, trying to find food. Then the military decided to make an assault with everything they had and raided the entire place. Me, and everyone else, ran for our lives or hid on any building they could. I hid on a small house, but it was not built using the best of materials, and it collapsed over me due to a bomb detonating nearby. I woke up on a hospital about a month later with a broken leg.

DarkenLM ,

It was on a relatively isolated part of Nigeria, but it was a somewhat modern village. Since then I've left the continent and haven't looked back, but last time I checked, the place was left in ruins.

I usually don't trust percentages unless they are followed by the absolute value of the sample universe. Statistics are the greatest lies ever created.

It's easy to boast about your country's defenses and what not when your country hasn't been regularly in devastating wars on their own territory.

The USA does have some brilliant minds of it's own, don't get me wrong. But most, if not all technology the USA has is either derived or completely developed by Europe, from Germany, the UK, or even France.

I think many of the scientists weren't Nazis, but rather forced to work for the Nazis, fearing for their and their family's lives. I could be wrong though, it has been a while since I've investigated that matter.

The only problem with open source is you can't really make a profit from it. If someone wants it, they can just spin up their own local copy of the original, and you can't do shit about it.

Thank fuck for that, cause if they didn't faker.js and node-ipc would have caused a lot of trouble, with the developers adding malware to a new version and later deleting the entire packages, breaking tons of projects. And those were everything but small packages.

Oh, yeah. When people discover shallow clone vs deep clone is when shit hits the fan. Though anyone that comes from a C background shouldn't fall on those traps either way.
