spez wants to remove Reddit from Google actively, so at least for this specifically I sincerely doubt he minds. Of course, the main reason he wants thatis only that he wants to inflate Reddit’s perceived investor value, so not sure what that even helps. But eh.

Here's what a random person on the internet thought of The Outer Worlds (lemmy.world)

I played the Steam version of the base game, with no DLC. I did not play the Spacer’s Choice “remaster” as it has a reputation for being broken and poorly put together. I played the game to completion on normal difficulty, completing most of the side quests, spending time with all my companions, and trying to get the most...

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Showerthough: Since this wasn’t actually a random person, what if we had a system where I genuinely ask a random person what they think of XYZ? Like speed-dating for games opinions.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, there are exceptions like Overboard, Storyteller, the Alien Isolation sidekick game or the whole Lifeline space series, but they’re all lost in an ocean of crap.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Now I will say that a game company maybe doesn’t need 1100 employees. That’s just intuitively oversized, at least to me.

That being said, I cannot imagine a substantial amount of money, that could trivially uphold those jobs, is being wasted on middle management positions which will not be part of these layoffs (of course, they never are), bonuses and C-suite yachts. Plus, the company had no game release sind 2017, maybe not performing too well financially is, well, expected? That is, certainly the wise CEO put significant sums of money from the highly successful early years of Destiny 2 aside to easily cushion the leaner years later instead of blowing it all on cocaine and hookers, right? Otherwise, why would someone keep that management around that cannot even do something as simple as cushioning money? Right? 😑

I hate how this never affects the people who are actually responsible for the losses. You never get the C’s sued to take the bonuses back they got blown up their arses. You never get all the excessive layers of middle management removed. No, they always let go of the actual workers, who could do fuck all to prevent it to begin with.

Yep. I mean in the end it has no product. It’s just billboard/ad space, in the world of commerce. Sure, it’s a lot of ad space, but ad space in the digital world is also effectively endless, so the percentage still isn’t actually that relevant as it can shift in a moment’s notice.

Say… if a neonazi buys the platform and brings all his friends with him.

But beyond an office he’s not even paying for and so on, Xitter got… nothing. They have no actual product that can be liquidated, no supply chains worth any money, nothing to rent/sell out beyond said adspace. Like many digital companies they rely entirely on hype for all their perceived value.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

However, for many years now, Twitch has entirely eliminated adblocking on desktop web

Me, having not seen an ad on Twitch in ~forever: 🤷‍♀️

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

It’s all crowd-sourced.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Firefox does. And got addons including adblockers.

Not trying to say one is better than the other you know. Just… saying.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Ubisoft is shutting down online services for some games. Damn. Important difference in the title, you made it sound like they’re shutting down fully, say after some ransomware attack or something!

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Damn.

Say what you will about Telegram as a system and its weird custom encryption. But when it comes to their feature details, they’re really ahead of the competition and I wish other chat apps would just copy stuff more readily from them.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I remember back when - at least over here in Germany - Gamestop were… cool. When they were just shop for consoles, games and some gaming geek stuff. And the whole used-sales was a small small side-business.

That was a long time ago, but damn was it awesome to have dedicated game shops.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

As if a Linux user wouldn’t insist on make-ing their own windows, from scratch…

Carighan OP ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not my project - I just stumbled upon the repository and figured I’d post a link here - but from what I have seen so far it seems to be a faithful re-implementation so far, so no online MP. I checked the open enhancement requests, and found none. Maybe open one to ask whether they’re considering it?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

And yet 99,9% of the time you just use it to get into arguments with people you don’t even know.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

How would that even register with people from 1923? What is a … “tracking device”? Or an “entertainment device”?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, like in that Doctor Who special where they tell the WW1 soldier “Now let’s get you back to your first world war” and he goes “FIRST world war?!”.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Of course, but it was also the generation after EQ1 in a lot of ways. It was able to learn from EQ1’s release and early months and quickly improve its own game as a result of that.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Fucking hell why did I read up about that. Okay this easily wins this post. Fuck that shit.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

But isn’t that the point? Support the few times someone runs ads decently?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Same ESDF is my go-to ever since Tribes but it stuck due to MMORPGs making it so much easier to use everything with it.

Vague Patch Notes: Default MMORPG genre features change over time, and that’s OK (massivelyop.com)

I am mostly posting this article because MMORPGs are one of my favorite genres, despite my lack of time to play them these days. But overall I have been pretty disappointed with the direction the genre has taken. Moving more towards solo-play, story-heavy, and small-scale theme-park style content.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Of course, and it’s important to keep in mind how much the context changes. Not just in gaming context, but keep in mind:

  • MMORPGs are hardly a new genre. Their players nowadays are a different generation of humans than when the genre was young.
  • Social context changed entirely between the start of the genre and today.
  • In a similar vein, digital socialisation is entirely normal now. We no longer need a very fancy minigame (EverQuest) attached to your online chat room just to socialise.
  • Through WoW and then again with the Wii gaming exploded as a hobby, even before mobile games created a somewhat separate but huge extra market. The modern target audience is on a wholly different scale. Just look at the peak subscription counts for EQ1 or DAoC.

It’d in fact be quite noteworthy if default features didn’t change substantially and continuously.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

These sound pretty cool. In particular the images on search could be useful to intuitively tell whether the correct sounding result is actually the one you were looking for

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Has anyone here played Tandem? How is it? Looks fantastic from just the store page, but had absolutely no spare time in which to try it. :(

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

So for me it depends on my room.

In the office/gaming room, the walls are entirely full of gaming related and other geeky posters. Some fantasy maps, a discworld map, such stuff. Posters of the Persona 5 palaces.

For the living room, one wall has a small area with cat pictures (including of my baby cat of 12 years who died 2 months ago <3), the main wall is slowly creeping full of empty board game expansion boxes where I put the stuff into the main box and then hang the expansion box up with poster strips to decorate the wall with the board game shelf.

For the bedroom, the main wall has the images from the two Sunstone calendars with the calendar parts cut off. The whole room is red/black, so they fit really well, plus the theme fits.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

It would not be in Germany AFAIK. But there’s also no chance it’ll ever come out over here, and frankly trying to sell a pretty is a tall order here. Nevermind something with a design only it’s deranged nazi inventor could love, if even that.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Depending on how much family/real estate you have, moving out of the US isn’t as difficult as you might intuitively think it’d be. At least not to other english-speaking countries like Canada, the UK or Ireland. Though do keep in mind that with the UK you’re hardly making your situation any better, yes on paper you get public health care and it’s still worlds better than the US, but it’s in such shambles you don’t want to rely on it. Tories! 🥳 🤢

But even outside of that, moving to some other countries such as France or Germany depending on your language skills isn’t as problematic as it was even 10 years ago any more, either. While these are still largely language dependent, a lot has internationalized in larger cities and having to rely on some english is no longer a big deal.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Imagine if religious fundamentalism wasn’t acceptable for a statesman. What a crazy modern world we could be living in.

Although I guess in the case of the US, the country was founded out of religious fundamentalism in its entirely, and from a clean slate. Much more difficult to untangle it.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I know, Germany is swinging far stupid-right, too. It’s shit everywhere, but it’s still better than in the US.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

You’re close, the name does derive from kat and gat, dutch words for cat and gate/passage/hole, respectively. The safe routes were so narrow, even a cat would have trouble squeezing through.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

What is stupid about not allowing fresh accounts to do X? As in, that’s just trying to filter spam/bots, that’s something completely normal?

fuck Reddit

This isn’t anything Reddit does, btw. It’s the rules of a single community using an automoderator to remove posts if they violate the rules.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

My partner of just under 15 years left me out of the blue three years ago.

It… wasn’t easy. I understood her reasons, but that didn’t make it emotionally more acceptable, especially having not known about it beforehand as after so many years it was the only big thing, “never keep anything back at all, no matter what”.

But I suspect my case was a bit different than yours, as the problem wasn’t the first night. She had been gone for a week or so for work before, or even 2 weeks for a Mallorca trip with a bunch of friends, so the first 3-4 days were perfectly fine. It hit really hard after about a week, and then lasted for about a month.
What I had to do was significantly change the flat. Not only rip out stuff that was “hers”, but more importantly reorganize rooms so that the association was gone. It helped. Once that part was changed, I could pretty quickly calm down. I needed that constant reminder of “us” gone. As if I had just moved into a new flat on my own, and this was all me!

That being said, there was one other thing. It sounds vain as hell, but I got a fuckbuddy. Sex helps. Happy hormons and all. It didn’t help on its own, but coupled with steadily changing the flat around me and engaging more with my personal hobbies over our shared hobbies, it was enough to get me through it.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I was about to say, this is actually from the onion. Indirectly. 😅

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

To be fair, exposure does not usually imply complicity, unless you failed to report something in a situation where as a layman you could tell this is legally questionable.

That is, clicking on a link then downvoting might be enough for you in regards to handling it. Yeah, it would have been better to either never click on it or flat out report it (Youtube has now taken down the video, phew), but that goes beyond what someone just clicking on some link could reasonably be expected to do.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

To be fair, as the article says it was a mixture of prescription drugs.

It wasn’t about viagra per se, but about satuff they could probably easily resell. Or at least thought they could.

Fediverser Portal: update to my fediverser project, people now can migrate away from reddit by signing up to the mirror instance directly. (portal.alien.top)

So, I know that my project fediverser has received quite a bit of criticism and its flagship instance alien.top has been quite controversial, but I hope that this update will help people understand the whole project better, which is more than “just yet-another repost bot”....

searching through the local & ALL listings like everyone else on Lemmy did

That feels weird to me as a reason, that’s just appeal to tradition. Yeah, you did that. And I did that. But that doesn’t magically make it the best solution. That doesn’t imply there cannot be a better way to discover content.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

They need to do something to make more money

I’m sorry, but Unity is just not a viable entity. They have consistently lost money since 2004, and in 2022 reported nearly 1 billion in net losses. Just close it down!

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Deep Rock Galactic: Fantasy Edition is looking pretty meh, tbh.

It’s a shame because if you describe it to me on paper, the concept of a co-op game where a group of dwarves build/rebuild Moria or at least a tiny portion of it sounds interesting. But among other things it’d need an art style. I mean it also needs a good one that is evocative of the world Tolkien created, but hey, first of all it needs an art style.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Idk why people act in this day and age like the Steam Deck is some crippled device

Please don’t misunderstand their criticism. It’s not criticism of the Steam Deck, but of Epic as a company. Epic’s store is the crippled thing, not the Steam Deck.

Yeah, we can work around it, as customers. We should not have to.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

we’re not selling a product that is evil

Oh I get it. The oil isn’t inherently evil. You are, both as a CEO and as a company! I agree, in fact. If we left the oil safely in the earth, there’d be nothing evil about it.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Wikipedia should counter by offering Elon $4 to go towards paying off his massive hole from buying Twitter. 😂

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly this. For me, life happened. My life has way bigger issues than being upset about or even truly recognizing a loss in a game.

I tried over 20 Steam Next demos so that you don't have to!

And I’ve rated them all below. I’m very glad Steam decided to do a big promotional event around them- it helped point me toward a lot of games I would have never tried/heard of otherwise. Some of the good ones might not be good the entire game, but they were at least good in the demo....

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Sidenote: Pioneers of Pagonia is by the actual developer of the actual old The Settlers.

I loved it. And yeah, it’s a simple management game without much depth or fuss, but that chill easygoing settling of the landscape is what enchanted me about the original right around 30 years ago, and it worked just as well with the demo. In fact I found that comparing Against The Storm, I kinda prefer the less gameplay that PoP has, exactly because it has less gameplay. ATS sits a bit in the middle, still being a chill town builder but also wanting to be deeper, and in that case I just want a proper 4X or Grand Strategy game instead. PoP is then the exact opposite of that for me, it appeals to the chill&relax part of gaming, a bit like playing Dorfromantik or something.

Though, as you say, it really was quite janky.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

And yet plenty drugs and medicine are controlled substances because they’d be so easy to abuse or hurt yourself with. We could just assign the same to ingame gambling, no? Since that’s also on an individual basis, handle it the same all around?

So to buy a lootbox:

  1. Go to a doctor.
  2. Doctor prescribes you a daily dosage of say, 1 lootbox.
  3. Each day you can go to the pharmacy and pick up a pack of 1 lootbox code, you can have at maximum a store of 4 of them at home then pharmacies stop giving you more so you cannot stockpile. (going by the pills a friend of mine gets prescribed here)
Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

You do realize this whole thread and post is about gambling addiction yes? You’re essentially doing the “I have a black friend, I can’t be racist!” but for gambling addiction.
