UN is not calling it a genocide though? The entire report your link refers to does not mention genocide. It does make a clear point of massive discrimination etc though ä.

Phones to receive an emergency alert test this week (youtu.be)

The video is a very short news item about FEMA testing the emergency alert system this week, but that’s not what I thought people would enjoy. It’s the comments - people are going batshit insane with every conspiracy theory you can think of (and more that you never would).

The message is sending a virus made by the world known hacker, Bill Gates. After this Microsoft and ThE gOvErNmEnT know everything you do and who you talk to and what about and what websites you visit and tiktoks you look at. First step of total world domination.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Yeah, in Finland at least the vegan Whopper is waaaaaaaay better than what McD or other similar franchises offer.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

The same thing as with tooooooons of things: scale.

Nobody cares if one dude steals office supplies at work. Now, if everyone stats doing it, or if the single guy steals everything, then action is taken.

Nobody cares if a random person draws in the same style and with same characters as you, but if they start to sell them, or god forbid, out-sell you, then there is a problem.

Nobody cares (except police I guess) if a random driver drives double the speed limit and annoys people living next to the road on the weekends, but when tons of people do it, you get speed bumps.

Nobody cares if few people pirate movies, but when it gets to mainstream and companies notice that there might be money being lost. Then you get whatever we have now.

Nobody cares if the mudhill behind your house erodes a bit and you get mud on your shoes. Have a bunch of that erode and you realise the danger…

You have been fine-tuning your own writing style for a decade and random schmuck starts to write similarly, you probably don’t care. No harm done. Now, get an AI to write 10 000 books in a weekend and someone starts to sell them… well now you have a completely different problem.

On a fundamental level the exact same thing is happening, yet action is only taken after a certain threshold is step over.

Everyone’s favorite chatbot can now see and hear and speak. On Monday, OpenAI announced new multimodal capabilities for ChatGPT. Users can now have voice conversations or share images with ChatGPT in real-time.

Audio and multimodal features have become the next phase in fierce generative AI competition. Meta recently launched AudioCraft for generating music with AI and Google Bard and Microsoft Bing have both deployed multimodal features for their chat experiences. Just last week, Amazon previewed a revamped version of Alexa that will be powered by its own LLM (large language model), and even Apple is experimenting with AI generated voice, with Personal Voice.

Voice capabilities will be available on iOS and Android. Like Alexa or Siri, you can tap to speak to ChatGPT and it will speak back to you in one of five preferred voice options. Unlike, current voice assistants out there, ChatGPT is powered by more advanced LLMs, so what you’ll hear is the same type of conversational and creative response that OpenAI’s GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 is capable of creating with text. The example that OpenAI shared in the announcement is generating a bedtime story from a voice prompt. So, exhausted parents at the end of a long day can outsource their creativity to ChatGPT.

Use your voice to engage in a back-and-forth conversation with ChatGPT. Speak with it on the go, request a bedtime story, or settle a dinner table debate. Sound on 🔊 pic.twitter.com/3tuWzX0wtS — OpenAI (@OpenAI) September 25, 2023

Multimodal recognition is something that’s been forecasted for a while, and is now launching in a user-friendly fashion for ChatGPT. When GPT-4 was released last March, OpenAI showcased its ability to understand and interpret images and handwritten text. Now it will be a part of everyday ChatGPT use. Users can upload an image of something and ask ChatGPT about it — identifying a cloud, or making a meal plan based on a photo of the contents of your fridge. Multimodal will be available on all platforms.

As with any generative AI advancement, there are serious ethics and privacy issues to consider. To mitigate risks of audio deepfakes, OpenAI says it is only using its audio recognition technology for the specific “voice chat” use case. Also, it was created with voice actors they have “directly worked with.” That said, the announcement doesn’t mention whether users’ voices can be used to train the model, when you opt in to voice chat. For ChatGPT’s multimodal capabilities, OpenAI says it has “taken technical measures to significantly limit ChatGPT’s ability to analyze and make direct statements about people since ChatGPT is not always accurate and these systems should respect individuals’ privacy.” But the real test of nefarious uses won’t be known until it’s released into the wild.

Voice chat and images will roll out to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users in the next two weeks, and to all users “soon after.”

The Man Amazon Erased (www.tabletmag.com)

Jackson soon discovered that Amazon suspended his account because a Black delivery driver who’d come to his house the previous day had reported hearing racist remarks from his video doorbell. In a brief email sent to Jackson at 3 a.m., the company explained how it unilaterally placed all of his linked devices and services on...

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Chromecast? You connect it when needed.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Sure, not denying it. But the point was that you can not connect the TV into the Internet and still use netflix etc. You stream the content through chromecast when you need to.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Yup. And the moment he steps down (or gets hit by the greed) everything will go to shit. As is tradition.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

That’s good to know.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Can’t wait to need an ad blocker in my brain.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Man, I should find a bunch of blogs etc, get an rss reader and read those instead of doom scrolling memes and garbage.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Thanks! I’ll take a look.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

A month or so ago I woke up and something went crack in my neck as I tried to get up from the bed. Pain. Can’t move my head. Slooowly subsides over like 15min. It still feels off and stiff and starts to hurt if it is a weird position for a while. Not sure what happened but fuck that.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I don’t think this is true? Their site unity.com/pricing-updates says “The fee applies to new installs beginning January 1, 2024”

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Oh yeah good point. The word “retroactively” just gave me the idea that it would apply to old installs, because this whole thing is about installs.

Still, that is a major dick move.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

There is quite a lot of extra discussion regarding the 1000-ton rule in the artual report itself (link can ne found in the article). Here are some excerpts:

it is likely more than 300 million (“likely best case”) and less than 3 billion (“likely worst case”) will die as a result of AGW of 2 °C.

A more recent attempt at quantifying future deaths in connection with specific amounts of carbon was published by Bressler [69]. Coining an economically oriented term “mortality cost of carbon”, he claimed that “for every 4434 metric tons of CO2 pumped into the atmosphere beyond the 2020 rate of emissions, one person globally will die prematurely from the increased temperature”. His predictions were confined to deaths from extreme heat when wet-bulb temperature exceeds skin temperature (35 °C).

Some interesting stuff in there.

I would’ve added more but holy shit the mdpi.com mobile website is atrocious to copy stuff from. It keeps throwing me at the end of the entire article, highlighting everything.

I remember reading a lot about Ode not being able to grind fine enough for V60s. There have been upgrades to the burrs but afaik the original one was a bit iffy. That is the reason I did not buy one a few years back. It might be something to take a gander at, and also to check what burrs are in the refurbished Ode.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I can’t remember any from the top of my head. There was decent amount of discussion about it on in reddit r/coffee.

Japan says seawater radioactivity below limits near Fukushima (www.channelnewsasia.com)

Tests of seawater near Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant have not detected any radioactivity, the environment ministry said on Sunday (Aug 27), days after authorities began discharging into the sea treated water used to cool damaged reactors....

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Uh huh. You are aware that pretty much everything has radioactivity in it? And that there are serious regulations on the limits of those due to it generally being a bad thing. Those regulations determining safe limits for it. As in, it is safe. As in, no harm is done. When you stay within those limits, you’re fine. Just like with every single thing regarding chemicals and waste, and pretty much anything. That is why the regulations exist in the first place.

I always think it as the difference between a nice vacation and a whole generation.

Oh god the nozzle is clogged! It is spewing filament everywhere! Better use the cleaning filament ingests burrito.

Need help ensuring my public mediawiki is safe before launch

Hi, I’m setting up a public wiki using mediawiki and I’d like some help ensuring the server and mediawiki is safely setup before I start sharing it publicly. I installed it on Vultr using the mediawiki app from the Vultr Marketplace. Are there any things I should ensure before publicly sharing the link?...

AnonStoleMyPants ,

It does not increase security per se but it does limit the amount of bots trying to connect to your server. At least it will make your log a bit less cluttered with random garbage.

Also installing something like fail2ban might be a good idea. Or even better would be to block all ssh connections except from a specific ip address (whitelist). This of course depends whether you can trust your ip to stay the same, or if you can still log in through some other interface if necessary.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

And when they respond, be interested in what they do. Ask questions, make follow up questions etc.

Do you still write notes with pen and paper?

With so much note taking apps nowadays, I can’t understand why does anyone still write notes with pen and paper. You need to bring the notepad, book or that paper to retrieve that information, and most of the time you don’t have it in hand. While my phone almost always reachable and you carry when you go out. For those still...

AnonStoleMyPants ,

95% digital. Work journal is in Tiddlywiki and that’s basically it. Todo lists I do tend to do with pen & paper.

I like pen and paper but searching is always such a fucking hassle and my hand writing is garbo. If I know I don’t need to actually find anything later then it’s great (doodling and thinking about something). I guess I could do pen and paper and layer save into digital but meh.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Not really. But it would be difficult because I have many things I need to keep track of. If I need to later figure out if I did X for Y then I need to be able to find it. Or if I quickly need to find every step I’ve done relating to Y it gets difficult. Only way would be to write everything basically twice, to a notepad (or page) about Y, and also to my journal where I quickly jot down what I have done today.

I’ve thought about digitizing notes and using something like hashtags which I could then search for but it was way too much of a hit and miss to covert handwriting to a searchable format.

Of course having a good index would make things easier but dunno. Maybe I’ll take another shot at it at some point.

I feel like raisins are always in the wrong place, and for everyone this place is different. But when they are in the wrong place, you immediately notice and and go “WHYYY”. Hence raisins bad. Also chocolate sucks.

Revealed: WHO aspartame safety panel linked to alleged Coca-Cola front group (www.theguardian.com)

It uncovered eight WHO panelists involved with assessing safe levels of aspartame consumption who are beverage industry consultants who currently or previously worked with the alleged Coke front group, International Life Sciences Institute (Ilsi)....

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Holy balls that’s a large cup wtf. How popular are they? I mean, you see them in movies but that’s all the info I can draw from lol.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

By “as soon as you know” you mean “as soon as you have put those bindings to muscle memory”. Knowing them isn’t really enough.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Even disregarding all bigotry and racism that this screams of, it’s dumb af because kids can be friends with FUCKING rocks. It’s pretty much their superpower.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I’d be scared to have an account in something with .zip domain. Could be that some big players start to block that domain (Google, isps).

Though I guess you just make a new account if shit hits the fan.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Yeah I guess that’s the issue. It has to look good. Otherwise it’s just garbage on the walls.

Most of the time it does not look good (imo of course), but of course there are exceptions.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I feel like microtransactions are “ok” for people on general as long as the game is good. If the game is well made, has a soul, and not a cash grab, people tend to not care about microtransactions. Except the occasional “fuck, this is 10e?”. Like path of exile for instance.

But if the game is half baked, released waaaay too early because of higher ups said that the need money now and not 6 months from now, THEN they become an issue. Games belong to this category soooo of then these days that it’s just what happens. But the microtransactions are not the reason, they just exasperate the issue.

If a great game like Elden ring would’ve had cosmetic sets you could buy, would it have undermined the “greatness” of the game? I really don’t see it happening. Unless they’re like super aggressive or meant to trivialise the game, like, continue fighting the boss only for 2e! Here’s a popup mentioning this each time you die.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Of course! And it definitely does not try to pry all info about the user that it can and definitely the company behind would not use that in any way.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I should do that next year. Grow a bunch of stuff for the first time hydroponically this year and it has been fun. Even though the pruning gods would murder me if they saw my tomatoes.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Fuck yes. Though I grow outside.

On the other hand, I’ve been expanding and fiddling my system all summer long for god know how many hours. That reminds me that my nute res is almost empty…

AnonStoleMyPants ,

My zucchini has been amazing! First time growing it and just a single plant but I’ve probably gotten like 8 large bois from it. Tomatoes seem suuuuper late, tons of berries but not even a hint of ripening.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Zuckertraube. Yeah could be that, just noticed today that my Sweet Sturdy tomatoes have begun ripening, yay!

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Check Neo Store. It is an alternative front end to F-droid and has been way less buggy for me. Though to be fair just yesterday it ate up 20% of my battery life due to not being able to sync a repo (I think), but that hasn’t happened before.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Yup got the same thing. Annoying as hell. The loading bar always goes to like quarter of the way and stays there for a couple of seconds and the continues. After that it’s fine, but it is always the first page you load after closing Firefox.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

This is why you need to add reddit to the search.

Which is sad as hell.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I think this thread is the first one to get my save button.

On topic, if you’re into gardening (or just wanna watch something different) check out Hoocho. A guy building hydroponic systems and growing stuff. Great channel. Also no weed if that’s the first thing that comes to mind from hydroponics.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

It is of acute importance to stay vigilant of mathematicians; we cannot go on tangents and let their plots divide us. I’m sure they’re integrating themselves into positions of power, and knowing even a fraction of their schemes could be of prime significance to factoring out their plans to subtract our freedoms.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I had an RC car as a kid with a small combustion engine that used methanol. When I and my friend realised that methanol burns without a flame we got so excited. It brought a new dimension to our army men shenanigans. That and discovering home made napalm.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Yeah we used styrofoam and melted it into this weird goo that sticks everywhere. Was dope.
