They're really only worse in the sense that they can be louder. In a datacenter/mining rig/etc where you don't care about noise at all, they're pretty much the best solution to cooling a large amount of cards as they blow air out near the outputs instead back into the rack.

Health care system "collapse": Doctors, experts sound alarm over Puerto Rico's medical system (www.cbsnews.com)

“The collapse is caused mainly by debt and the economic crisis in Puerto Rico and historic privatization of the health care system there. Our research shows patients are waiting for six to eight months to get an appointment with a specialist. If that’s not a sign of collapse, I don’t know what is,” said Varas-Diaz.

Yep. It's what's gotten my father to pull his head out of his ass regarding public Healthcare. His last argument was longer wait times in Canada/UK, and the difference us pretty much gone. Broken doesn't even begin to describe it.

Yeah I think that might be because they were on the moon and not pressing WASD to walk around a fake moon

Their marketing is just incredibly childish and brash. Doesn't personally upset me, but it's certainly never made me want to check out their products.

For a certain portion, it's because some have become outright theocratic accelerationists. They actively want the situation to get worse, because that means Jesus comes back!

@Alto@kbin.social avatar

That implies that any of them have ever actually read the bible

Alto ,

Not sure where you pulled 8000lbs from, even a fully speced out expedition isn't going to be 6000lbs. Most non full sized ones, especially ones like the CRV or escape or something are under 4,000lbs. A model 3 weighs more than the majority of those smaller SUVs.

Don't try to take this as any sort of pro-suv or anti-ev message, quite the opposite. Spouting incorrect bullshit makes people less likely to believe the actual facts, such as the increase of SUVs and trucks quite literally killing us.

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

And had they reported it as "officials say it may have been" instead of "IT WAS 100% DEFINITELY A TERRORIST ATTACK FROM THE GAYCHINESECOMMUNOISLAMISTS" it wouldn't be a problem

@Alto@kbin.social avatar

I promise you the amount I save on my payment + gas is far more than the amount it costs me to rent a truck the very, very rare occasions I need one. The same goes for the vast majority of American suburbanites.

Israel, Hamas agree deal for release of Gaza hostages, truce (www.reuters.com)

GAZA/TEL AVIV, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Israel’s government and Hamas agreed on Wednesday to a four-day pause in fighting to allow the release of 50 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for 150 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel, and the entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave.

Alto ,

There's a handful of people that really don't want to acknowledge that

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

No, but they knew exactly what the Israeli reaction would be, and that said reaction would end up providing a wave of freshly minted fighters.

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

We can argue whether or not it's still relevant today/how it needs to be changed, but trying to claim that the second amendment doesn't very, very heavily imply firearms is disingenuous at best.

@Alto@kbin.social avatar

People shit on Elon Musk’s stuff for internet points.

Yeah has nothing to do with the fact that he's actively furthering the west's descent into authoritarianism or anything. Guy misses apartheid

Which would be exactly why the rest of us dream of a future where they don't exist

Alto ,

I mean, yeah. They absolutely don't want to be spending bandwidth on those of us who use adblockers. What I don't think a lot of people realize is that Google is perfectly happy with the people who are essentially never served an ad not using the service anymore. Saves them money.

I think anyone who has even the slightest idea of how the market works knows Tesla is grossly overvalued. Obviously it's nowhere near the whole story, but when their market cap is nearly 20× that of Ford's with ½ the revenue, something is fucky

Oh I don't doubt that in his mind he is improving the world.

The issue is that his vision for an improved world also includes it being a neofascist hellscape. Dude misses living in apartheid

when will be your last time to vote for the "lesser of two evils"?

When will be your “this is the last fucking time I’m voting for the ‘lesser of two evils’, then I don’t care after that, let this country burn to the ground”? For me, this is basically it. This is last election I’m going for that " lesser of two evils" bullshit. After that I’m done. It’s just pointless. Let’s...

That'd require there to have ever been a candidate I like. There hasn't been, at least on the federal level

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

Continued complacency by people bitching about candidates not being good enough is how we're on the knifes edge of destroying our democracy here in the states.

I don't like the people I vote for, but I sure as fuck would rather live in our current neolib hellscape than the psuedotheocratic bullshit the loudest voices in the GOP so clearly want. Sitting on your ass enables exactly that

On paper, sure. They gave them $10B. They absolutely have some sort of voice here

There's the potential that the root cause behind the firing could end up having ramifications in the AI/wider tech sector. There's no evidence pointing towards anything right now so all of this is purely theoretical, but if he was for example somehow covering up major financial issues that severely impact OpenAI, you could see that effect the industry as a whole.

‘Energy independent’ Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months (theprogressplaybook.com)

Decades and decades of fossil fuel company FUD about nuclear that they managed to get the greens to buy into a long time ago.

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

If anything, “Sunshine and rainbows” renewables are a psyop to help entrench fossil fuels long-term.

Specifically in regards to the "if it's not perfect we shouldn't even try" crowd, that's exactly what it is. Imperfect solutions we can implement now are infinitely better than perfect solutions that come years too late

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

You're right the world isn't going to end. But the water shortages, refugee criseses that make anything we've ever seen look like nothing, losing significant amounts of coastline, and much more frequent much more extreme weather sure as fuck is going to reduce quality of life significantly.

If facing the reality we're in causes you to go "oh well I give up", that's a you problem. Acknowledging that were in for a real tough time if people don't start taking this seriously isn't the problem, the fact that people aren't taking it seriously is.

Shrinkflation hits IKEA Family by removing 5% discount (i.imgur.com)

IKEA Family is a membership program, like grocery store memberships. The only real feature of the program was their 5% discount. But now, they are getting rid of it to focus on “New Lower Price offers”. I’m not holding my breath that their prices are going to come down anytime soon....

I would be incredibly surprised if it were intentional. Every single player there knows exactly what doing that would mean.

Freak accidents happen, especially in hockey. Malarchuk had his throat slashed by a skate, Pronger took a slapshot to the chest that stopped his heart, and Peverley and Bouwmeester have randomly collapsed on the bench. Somehow all of those managed to survive, it's honestly a miracle it doesn't happen more often.

Everything about the invasion relied on Ukraine not putting up enough of a fight to warrant support from the west.

Which was a fair assumption, if they simply ignored the massive amount of work Ukraine put into getting their military into shape since 2014
