Yknow whay else would have? Raising pay for your lower paid positions.

Fucking assholes

I will, under normal circumstances, defend teachers to the death. My mother was one, and I am well aware of the absolute bullshit they face daily.

I have also had a very small handful of teacher who were absolute shitheads, and being yelled at was a small fraction of what they deserved. Not every teacher is a saint.

If a cop managed shoot the gas tank on a flying plane, I wouldn't even be mad if I died in that crash

I can't tell if you're joking or not

That doesn't change the fact that you're not going to hit an object going 125mph at 9000'

The planes dropping napalm were flying low, not damn near 2 miles up.

You can think you're john wick all you want, it's not fucking happening

More importantly it removes the expectation to include earbuds with the phone as well as allows them to sell you Bluetooth ones

Mostly true, yeah. The "AKG" ones that came with my S8 were honestly pretty damn nice though.

Considering the change in trend started a decade before that

They know we can. They also know that they only need to get lucky once, while everyone else has to get lucky every time.

Where have I heard that one before?

That's northern white rhinos. Southern white rhinos have an estimated population of ~15k and are currently classified as near threatened.

And to require the police to live in the areas that they police again. They shouldn't be able to ruin a community just to clock out and go home 3 towns over.

It's a "profession" built around exploiting the poor say the landlord doesn't have to get a real job

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

It's such a weak argument too. The majority of renters aren't renting from your neighbor Joe who's renting out his basement, they're doing so from property management companies who sole existence is to exploit the fact that nobody can afford a home anymore

Alto , (edited )
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

I interacted regularly with plenty of them in a former job. Most of them drove cars worth more than I made in 2 years. They weren't renting just so they could pay for granny's retirement

"forcing people to give up large portions of their income while building absolutely no equity in it simply to not be homeless due to policies we lobbied for isn't exploitative!"

Then there's the real world.

Large groups of landlords/property management companies buy the majority of residential buildings in an area -> theres essentially nowhere else left to live -> they collude to increase prices

The GDP gap between Europe and the United States is now 80% (www.lemonde.fr)

It was early this summer, before Americans started crossing the Atlantic to savor the sweetness of European life. Prices are very much affordable for them there, and the Wall Street Journal gave the reason as being Europe’s inexorable impoverishment: “Europeans are facing a new economic reality, one they haven’t...

Im sure it's making the very few people who actually receive that wealth happier.

The common man ain't seeing a dime of it though, so the rest of us ain't

Nah they're totally right, there's never been a monarchy that's ended without killing the entire family. Except for all the ones that have.

Somewhat similar to what happened to my grandpa. Technically wasn't drafted, he had buddy in the draft office gave him a heads up that'd it'd be a very good idea for him to enlist soon. He ended up as a supply officer in Okinawa and got to take my grandma with him. Good thing too (and largely why it happened), the man's eyesight is/was awful. He would've almost certainly been a dead man had he ever lost his glasses in combat

You are so close to being self aware

I can't speak to whether it's the case in this specific instance, but it's quite common for politicians to just happen to get donations from entities tied to these sorts of projects soon before or after they get the go ahead

College students are still struggling with basic math. Professors blame the pandemic (apnews.com)

Colleges across the country are grappling with the same problem as academic setbacks from the pandemic follow students to campus. At many universities, engineering and biology majors are struggling to grasp fractions and exponents. More students are being placed into pre-college math, starting a semester or more behind for their...

I'm a firm believer that a not insignificant portion of people had one or two really shit math teachers at some point, decided that they're bad at math because of it, and then proceeded to just give up. Very often it was specifically related to fractions.

The math professors at my uni were fantastic, and I saw many friends who always thought they were bad at math have lightbulb moments where something finally clicks.

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

Most subjects also don't build off of the last class anywhere near to the same degree as math. You have a shitty teacher in geography, that's not really going to be putting you at anywhere near as much of a disadvantage when you take world history.

Alto ,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

There's a weird amount of accepted anti intellectualism that specifically applied to math, and I've never understood it.

Most people have a hard time grasping concepts as simple as compounding interests, which is an incredibly important concept if you want to either save money or not go into ridiculous amounts of credit card debt. You use algebra every single day, doing thing as simple as shopping. People just don't realize it.

I played the shit out of Blacklight: Retribution back in the day, and saw the whole transition from zombie studios to buildblock to hardsuit labs. The devs were really active on various forums, and all seemed like great people.

I've been waiting so long for them to release something new, but this sort of game was a complete departure from anything they worked on (as the main dev) in the past. I'm not shocked that it didn't worked out.

Russia and North Korea 'actively advancing' in arms deal negotiations, says US (www.cnn.com)

Russia and North Korea are “actively advancing” their negotiations over a potential arms deal that would provide significant ammunition for different types of weapons systems, including artillery, in the latest indication that the Kremlin is desperate to obtain further materiel for its faltering invasion of Ukraine,...
