Lynn Conway, leading computer scientist and transgender pioneer, dies at 85 (www.latimes.com)

I have mixed feelings on the pronoun use, but having read some of her autobiographical writing I don’t think she would have taken much issue with it. This piece is more focused on her work in computer engineering, so I felt it was appropriate to post here.

It’s fine how they’ve used it because it’s referring to the time before transition, so it’s just being accurate and also means the story makes more sense.

Jackthelad ,

What they “felt on the inside” is not the same as what they actually were at the time though. Referring to them as he or she is just a statement of fact at the time.

We had this same thing when Ellen Page became Elliot Page. Then there was an attempt to retroactively change all references and make them Elliot Page, even though the work he did before was as Ellen Page.

It’s not transphobic to acknowledge the person they were before transition.

Jackthelad ,

Why though? You were that gender, and then you transitioned to what you are now.

Just because you weren’t happy as your birth gender doesn’t mean that it didn’t exist.

Jackthelad ,

Finally the haptic feedback will get used to its full potential again!

Jackthelad ,

Not when he has been creating a narrative since 2020 that he was the real winner of that election and all these court cases are just designed to try and stop him from being President.

His supporters have bought the premium subscription to this narrative, so nothing is going to change their minds. In fact, the more court cases there are, the more support he gets.

Even though going after him for his alleged crimes is the right thing to do, I actually wish they’d just let him fade into obscurity instead. Because all it has ended up doing is helping his campaign.

Jackthelad ,

Well, this blows the “if you’ve not done anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about” argument out of the water.

Should I permanently leave Israel?

I’m not sure if this is the right community for this question, but it says “no stupid question” so here goes. I’m an Israeli who now lives in the US, but I am considering permanently residing in the US or elsewhere (perhaps somewhere in Europe or Canada) because I’ve become kinda disillusioned with Israel for a variety...

Jackthelad ,

Yeah, this isn’t something that any of us can decide for you. And any views will be clouded by how people think on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Jackthelad ,

To be fair, the current Israeli government has far-right members in it, so a centrist would look far-left in comparison!

Jackthelad ,

If this voice actor’s voice has been digitally altered to make her sound more like Scarlett Johansson, then she has a point.

If they’ve just hired someone who happens to sound a bit like her, then there is no case. That voice actor has the right to use her own voice.

Jackthelad ,

My Pixel 4a’s battery is on the wane, so this may be my next phone.

Probably wait for a price drop though because I’m not desperate for it at the moment.

Jackthelad ,

Lol. I’m sure this will definitely work.

Jackthelad ,

It’s an online petition. If petitions actually had the power to change anything, they wouldn’t let you sign them. The response will always be some mealy-mouthed rubbish.

Frankly, this isn’t anything to do with the government anyway, nor should they be getting involved.

Jackthelad ,

Imagine being sad enough to do this with everything you buy, as if you’re actually going to make a difference to anything.

Jackthelad ,

Are you new to the hypocrisy of FOSS nerds?

Jackthelad ,

Gboard should have this as standard. It does on my Pixel phone anyway.

Jackthelad ,

If it was free, they wouldn’t be able to charge the ridiculous prices they do.

Jackthelad ,

Yes. Everything should be monopolised and more expensive as a result.

Jackthelad ,

The only reason I don’t switch to Linux is because of all the nerds on here telling everyone to switch to Linux.

But seriously, I use my laptop for work and I’ve used Windows for years and know how it works. I don’t want to switch to a completely new OS that I don’t have a clue how to use, especially when I need it for work. I also don’t know whether the software I use will work on it either.

If there’s an easy tutorial and a way of knowing whether everything I need will work, I might consider trying it.

Jackthelad ,

It’s just going to be Assassin’s Creed in space, isn’t it?

Jackthelad ,

Same as it ever was.

Jackthelad ,

If security is your prime concern, then I definitely wouldn’t use an “all-in-one” messenger service.

Jackthelad ,

Wtf? The state doesn’t own our bodies.

How does genocide happen?

I can get behind murder. I feel like this, to some extend, is a genuine part of human behaviour. Even the horrific aftermath of such. But genocide truly feels inhuman to me. So I can never fundamentally understand how in history, civilizations went from point A to point B to Point Genocide. Any thoughts on this?

Jackthelad ,

Yeah, you’re not going to be winning over any people to your side of the argument with this tactic.

Jackthelad ,

Parents are concerned that providing their children with a smartphone will open them up to predators, online bullying, social pressure and harmful content.

These same parents will also just shove a smartphone or a tablet in front of their kids faces to shut them up for a while.

Jackthelad ,

What? You mean actually be a responsible parent?

Don’t be silly.

Jackthelad ,

The Lemmy devs are a bunch of tankie weirdos, so I’m definitely not going to give money to them.

Jackthelad ,

Lemmy.ml is the devs instance, and they have a habit of banning anyone who even slightly differs from their opinions. Basically, if you’re not a tankie like them, they will likely ban you.

They’re not interested in free discussions.

Are we all fucked?

I’m worried for the world. All I’ve been thinking about is WW3 and this shit makes me want to vomit. I can’t even smoke weed anymore without having a near panic attack. I feel unmotivated. I wake up and immediately just want to go back to bed. I’m not trying to spread fear but the Doomsday clock is 90 seconds till...

Jackthelad ,

News and the media in general preys on fear. They want you to be terrified because it makes you watch the news and read the papers and their websites. They hype up anything that will scare you.

The whole COVID period proved that.

Jackthelad ,

The internet being a “place” you would go to and then leave.

That’s almost impossible to do now because everything is so linked to being online.

Jackthelad ,

Apart from the fact that they don’t look alike and sound completely different, yeah, they’re basically the same person.

Jackthelad ,

I’ve been playing the campaigns and a bit of multiplayer on Battlefront 1 on PS5 and it’s been absolutely fine.

I’m not sure where all these complaints are coming from. Is the PC version a lot worse?

Jackthelad ,

That was as it launched. There are now a whole bunch of dedicated servers.

People have got their knickers in a twist over nothing.

Jackthelad ,

Yes, because that’s exactly the same thing.

It was literally a few hours later that they added the dedicated servers and people could play online.

Jackthelad ,

Game has online problems for the first few hours after launch. This has never happened before in the history of video games. 🙄

Wasn’t Helldivers 2 almost impossible to play for the first month? Yet there wasn’t much anger about that. This has a problem for a few hours and it’s the worst thing that has ever happened. 😂

Jackthelad ,

Do you know if you start up the game now, there’s plenty of servers and it, you know, works?

Are you really so impatient that a problem for the first few hours gets you this het up?

Jackthelad ,

Imagine just playing and enjoying a game, rather than forming your opinion based on an IGN article.

Jackthelad ,

Brilliant. Someone who doesn’t even own the game pontificating like an expert on it. 😂

“Couldn’t play the game”. There’s literally a bunch of single player content in the game. It’s not online-only.

Jackthelad ,

I wouldn’t be defending the game if it was actually as broken as is being made out.

It’s vastly overblown.

Jackthelad ,

The article linked at the top literally calls it a “disaster”.

Jackthelad ,

Struggling with the juxtaposition of a chain-smoking fitness instructor.

Jackthelad ,

Amazon drivers here never even hand you the parcels anymore. They leave it on the doorstep, knock the door and then by the time you’ve gone to the door to collect it, they’re driving off.

I did once have one not even bother knocking the door and automatically leave the parcel in the bin, even though I was at home and he could have just knocked the door and handed it to me. 🤦

Jackthelad ,

I don’t have any delivery notes. Also, on the odd occasions when I do, they don’t pay attention to them anyway.

“Leave with the neighbour if I’m not in”, then I get a picture of it sitting behind the bin.

Jackthelad ,

Just need passkey support on mobile and we’re all set.

(I don’t know if the article mentions that, my adblocker prevents me from reading it)

Jackthelad ,

I think most people hated this app though?
