Firefly vs lightning bug

I’ve always called them fireflies growing up but it seems like that’s dependent on where you grew up

Sounds like it’s time to take those skills to another party

That’s quite a lot of work that “if” is doing. Pretty sure humans going extinct isn’t on the schedule any time soon

Pedometer is my favorite of these. How many pedo’s ya get in today?

I like primer, but I’m not sure I really understand it even with all the charts and diagrams that are out there

“An Ontario court ruled against popular clinical psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson and is upholding an order for him to receive social media sensitivity training or lose his license to practice medicine… The court declared Dr. Peterson’s activities as harmful to the public and damaging to the profession of psychology, with his statements threatening to erode public trust… …He has not worked in clinical psychology since 2017,”

Agree he hasn’t lost his license yet, as that is currently what is being threatened if he does not comply with the court order. Hasn’t actually happened yet, just will if he doesn’t.

As for being harmful… I don’t know how to spell this out any simpler than the quote so I’ll just make it easier to read I guess?

**THE COURT DECLARED DR. PETERSON’S ACTIVITIES AS HARMFUL TO THE PUBLIC AND DAMAGING TO THE PROFESSION OF PSYCHOLOGY **

I’m really not what there is to misunderstand, he is under threat of losing his license because his actions are HARMFUL TO THE PUBLIC AND THE PROFESSION OF PSYCHOLOGY

I love this game too, I was deeply into all three of the Escape velocity games as a kid and Endless Sky scratches that itch perfectly

Just because it is the most expensive doesn’t mean it would not be MORE expensive to just let people sue you, especially after you know what the problem is. Ignorance is one thing but negligence is a whole other ball game

Ageroth ,

The speed of “light” and the speed of “gravity” are the same, whatever makes the speed of light be what it is has something fundamental to do with how gravity works and how it’s waves propagate.

The cold weather makes your immune system work harder, so all the normal crap you get exposed to has a higher chance to slip through the cracks and start growing.

The factor about people “huddling together” is a really bad way to say that generally people go outside less, and more time inside increases the chances of being around other people, and even if those people are not actively sick they can still be carrying enough virus to spread it. Think of it like getting sun burned, you can get exposed and be fine, some people are really good at resisting exposure, others are more sensitive, but if you do nothing to reduce exposure and nothing to protect yourself from that exposure, ya gonna get burned.

Ageroth ,

And right now you can go look at a map of time zones. Time zones are no where near the issue that date formats are

Figure out who you are, learn to love yourself, and change the things you don’t like

Newtons laws actually do an amazingly good job of describing motion in the realms of physics we typically interact with. Newtons laws aren’t wrong, for things like making an airplane fly and boats float, or things like throwing a ball/shooting an arrow/shooting a bullet, they’re just incomplete when you look at the “extremes” like inner planetary orbits. The main reason Einstein is so revered is because he was able to develop a theory and equations that do accurately predict what had been observed.

Almost certainly Einsteins theory is similarly incomplete, we just have to find the extremes where its predictions don’t agree with experiment and then understand what the experiment results actually mean and what could cause them.

One thing to always remember is that all these laws and theories and equations are just ways to model and predict the reality we experience. All models are wrong. Some models are useful.

After getting enough people to agree to do it, then pick a leader, then get the company to negotiate instead of fire everyone, then agree on a deal. Immediately after all that would you see a pay increase, again if the company doesn’t just fire everyone

Just how much money has been spent on fossil fuel extraction that could have been spent of tech development instead? https://reddthat.com/pictrs/image/5ebb3c53-5171-4722-8145-f314d9a07519.png

What do you think the difference is?

Ageroth ,

Seawater is two teaspoons salt per cup of water. That’s a little more than half a cup of salt per gallon of water. That is an unhealthy amount of salt.

You practically need tech bro money to afford a ticket though don’t you? The article says tickets are up to $2750, and while I know they go for less if you get lucky in the lottery or something like that they’re still like 800-1000$ just to get in. Who can afford that just as the entry fee, let alone what ever you need to survive the desert for a week?

Why can’t rural police be as corrupt or more, with even less oversight? How does that make city police not corrupt? What is the internal investigation process for rural cops, especially at the county sherrif level?

I will never stop being impressed by the absolute insanity that is British rhyming slang. Apparently I’ve never heard seppo before, short for septic tank, rhyming with Yank. I just learned a new mildy derogatory term for Americans, nice

End of an era: Zoom tells employees to return to office for work::Zoom is asking all of its employees to return to the office for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, when the tech company blew up as one of the main means of communication when people were forced to work from home.

I worked for a guy who referred to it as “layoff by attrition” who essentially explained that they only have a couple heads over what they predicted based on production volume, and they know the conditions at the plant aren’t nice to be in, 95° F and 50% through most of the summer in a stamping and welding shop. So instead of a tiny layoff or firing people they just wait until the people who won’t put up with the conditions on the floor take care of it themselves.

I’m most excited for fusion power generation. Currently we can ignite a fusion reaction but it takes more energy to control and contain it than you get back because it takes a huge amount of electricity to generate a magnetic field strong enough to contain the plasma. The strength of the magnetic field is proportional to the current flow, which is limited by how much cooling is required to maintain superconductivity. Without cooling taking a huge chunk of the power created by the fusion reaction we could net positive energy from the reaction and finally have a clean source of scalable nuclear power.

I believe there is a modern spiritual successor called War for the Overworld, basically exact same game layout and mechanics with modern engine and graphics
