I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or “just asking questions” stuff.

I’m generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of people’s views.

But whose responsibility is it to monitor their internet access? Mom and Dad need to step up and actually parent their children!

Yeah…Isn’t this likely unconstitutional given the first amendment? This strikes me as somewhat similar to attempts to regulate video games “for making children violent” or the like. At best this may result in TikTok releasing a children’s variation of the app with greater restrictions in terms of use and content, supposing something like that doesn’t already exist.

Similar to how YouTube has a variation of their app for children, if I remember right.

…You ever wonder if Musk inadvertently benefited from being backed into buying Twitter, merely by virtue of much of the media’s addiction to Twitter leading to their incessant reporting on it and his BS on there?

It’s like Trump all over again, rather than any particular skill at media manipulation, a lot of the media can’t help but report on these assholes because of a mix of the clicks/views they draw, and their own weird social media addictions.

Perhaps it’s exemplary advice on what one should sleep on for a change?

Yeah, I mean, we all know it’s to keep the chips in suspended animation until the bag is opened and their lives concluded for snacks, right?

ALostInquirer ,

The thing is, I don’t think a guide is really needed to install Linux. Most of it is pretty straight-forward. (The only tricky bit that comes to mind is making the USB that you’ve put your distro on bootable. That probably isn’t obvious; and it might not be obvious how to get your computer to boot from a USB anyway if you’ve never done it before.)

It’s been awhile since I installed a Linux distro…Have some of them improved guidance related to allocating disk space on install? I remember that was one of the parts that I wasn’t entirely confident I’d handled properly the last few times I did so. Something something swap, something /, and the like.

ALostInquirer OP ,

that is a beautiful thing for my registration-exhausted ass

ALostInquirer ,

He said the conflict was not therefore imperial or territorial but about the global order, and that the West, which had lost its hegemonic power and always needed an enemy, had lost touch with reality.

I’m a little confused, how does one separate actions towards global order from imperial actions? Aren’t imperial actions typically in relation to attempting to establish or maintain a nation’s position in, or as, the global order? In a similar vein, does anyone believe the West is a genuine, political entity that is altogether united, rather than a basic academic concept to help differentiate some elements of the world from others?

Last I looked around, the West is about as much of a real political entity that’s wholly united about as much as the East is, which is to say, it isn’t.

Eventually I can see getting rid of them, but for now they’re keeping Lemmy active.

Do a multitude of automated posts without comments and conversation really count as activity? Before I simply hid bot posts via settings, I’d rarely see any conversations appearing on Reddit reposts. Even now if you look at probably the most prolific bot instance/account behind this, Lemmit.online bot, you can see this for yourself.

Interesting archival project, I suppose, but it certainly doesn’t seem to generate activity in terms of conversation, besides posts like this.

That and an increase in size for religions that believe in reincarnation […]

Would reincarnation alone still really be a religious element at that point, given that it may just be a natural phenomena?

ALostInquirer ,

Won’t a wall, supposing it’s somewhat effective at mitigating unlawful entry over the surface, simply encourage even more risky behavior such as (more?) tunneling and/or attempts at entering via the Gulf?

Also, for cat lovers out there, you might want to note this detail that just adds to the suffering this will perpetuate:

Concern is shared with environmental advocates who say structures will run through public lands, habitats of endangered plants and species like the Ocelot, a spotted wild cat.

Finally, wouldn’t the more modern, humane, and fiscally responsible solution to this whole issue be migration reform such that people can more easily, legally enter the country? More people become citizens, more tax revenue, governments’ budgets may still be tight but more manageable (supposing they continue to insist on avoiding taxing businesses more).

Don’t get me wrong, though, I realize a big part of why it’s not being addressed that way is related to fearmongering, with another big part being exploited migrant labor.

ALostInquirer ,

Something I struggle to understand with theistic religions: what is the place of human action in a divinely created universe besides prayer for and faith in divine intervention in any undesirable circumstance?

It strikes me that any action might require what one may call a suspension of faith, depending on the circumstances, otherwise it seems that the more rational course of action would be to submit to one’s fate, however it may be decided by their deity.

ALostInquirer ,

I tend to agree with this a ton, yet it’s left me asking over and over, “What the fuck do I do for work that won’t steal my time and leave me miserable?”

I don’t know if there’s any answer for me personally on this, as I think I just abhor the entire modern arrangement of work that wants your whole life instead of only a small portion of your time just to get by.

ALostInquirer ,

Speaking of, would anyone happen to know where one may buy digital movies/tv shows without DRM? Up to now I’ve opted to simply buy DVDs/blurays and rip them, but if there’s a more straightforward digital option without DRM, I’d be all for that.

ALostInquirer ,

Thanks! Something’s certainly better than nothing!

ALostInquirer OP ,

My high school had access to a couple of the major academic publication databases, so we definitely learned the fundamentals.

Was this a public high school? I ask as I know many academic publication databases tend to have notorious costs associated with them, albeit maybe they’re more relaxed than I had realized for schools.

ALostInquirer OP ,

But as someone who has gone on to do actual research at an academic level, I’d say the essential challenge of the task wasn’t even touched. Which is getting to the bottom of a question or field, exploring the material on said topic and then digesting and synthesising all of that. Some may hit this in undergrad depending on the degree, and it’s tricky work to do well and at an advanced level.

From what I’ve seen, the ideas and techniques required aren’t covered early on at all. Now it may be rather challenging at an early educational level, but I’d bet you it’s possible but undesirable because it’s hard to grade and takes a long time.

Without having gone on to do actual research, but with at least undergrad completed, I’m inclined to agree. Despite having completed undergrad, even it left me wondering a fair amount how much I’d just been a terrible student or how much my education had somehow managed to sort of gloss over or speed over rather critical research skills to develop.

Sure, I knew how to search for info and kind of weigh the sources, as some others have noted, but the more involved work like you describe? Not so much, and I’m fairly confident it was as much to do with the curriculum as it was to do with the limited time each class/course had to work with (plus accounting for the fact you’d also be muddling through multiple other classes/courses), which wouldn’t necessarily even permit for assignments that would have one digging in and really researching thoroughly.

ALostInquirer OP ,

What is college? Is it employed for middle school or high school? If so then no.

It’s for post-high school education, also referred to as higher education in my area. Generally they’re synonymous with universities in that respect where I’m from, and while I’m sure there may be some slight difference between the two (probably more distinct in other areas), I don’t know what they are exactly.

ALostInquirer ,

dishonors the previous selections from previous presidents.

To what degree should prior selections be honored/respected if the presidents in question won under questionable circumstances, e.g. George W. Bush’s election in 2000 and the stopping of the Florida recount, or Donald J. Trump’s election in 2016 after his call for foreign interference, alongside James Comey reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton just before the election?

Usually gaming goes up when the cold weather comes around. Perhaps we will see growth then. We ought to be making sure we make communities for each new game that comes out, if an instance creators goal is to attract a lot of people.

Speaking of, wouldn’t that be a good time for a general games/gaming instance to spin up then to play host to those communities?

ALostInquirer ,

It’s absolutely bonkers for Microsoft to even consider that paying $99 or $199 for their ad ridden software is fair and reasonable.

Have you seen their Xboxes? Somehow they get by with charging even more for those with more blatant ads and they charge you to play online multiplayer.

ALostInquirer ,

They do reportedly sell them at a loss and compensate via software sales and these days more than ever, subscriptions. Ads are just icing on the cake for them, I imagine, compared to the software sales & subscription revenues.

ALostInquirer ,

So a fun idea might be to set up or join an invite-only Mastodon server, and spin it as the Cool Place To Be™? It sounds silly, but hey, if that’s part of what’s working for another social space…lol

ALostInquirer , (edited )

Who is the target audience for BlueSky? BlueSky’s tech isn’t as open or developed as the alternatives though, is it?

Edit:
Not sure why I asked that first question, answer’s obvious, so it was more out of frustration I think. Sort of in a similar way towards people moving to Threads or any other corporate social media again after getting screwed before.

ALostInquirer ,

Invite only makes people think no spammers? Have they never been in any space with minimal obstacles to entry like that? Any place people are, there’s going to be someone or some activity you don’t care for.

Makes me think of folks thinking there will be fewer annoying people in online games with sub fees. 😂

Idk isn’t a public ledger of drug transactions kinda naff?

What is this, competitive smart phone use?

No, but the options are defeatist because they reflect my feelings related to the broad design trends of phones being bigger, and my preference for handling a phone one-handed. For me personally, it’s caving in (and frankly just clumsy feeling) to have to use both hands to handle phones (in portrait orientation) that are in a weird size range that’s almost too big but not so much so that they’re no longer portable.

Also in my opinion while it’s absolutely not a personal failure to use an accessory to help handle larger phones, it simply is a design failure. It’s like having to put a label on a door to tell people how to open it, that’s courtesy of a design failure that made opening the door ambiguous.

Anyway, 6.5" is a large phone to me, so that being a “standard” is why the phrasing is so defeatist. You’re stuck in an awkward compromise if you want a device capable and comfortable: get some less powerful but smaller option (e.g. Jelly), or something that even on the smaller end is still relatively large (e.g. Zenfone 8/9).

ALostInquirer OP , (edited )

That’s right on the edge of larger to me looking at the dimensions. It’s not super comfortable but not as bad as the Max might be imo. I can say that without having one as I currently have a phone around the same dimensions and it’s workable but I’d honestly like it somewhat smaller (both in length/width).

Tbh I feel like the iPod Touch (6th/7th gen I think) is right around the sweet spot in terms of dimensions for me personally, albeit I suspect those probably suck for folks with larger hands.

ALostInquirer OP ,

I had to stop handling my phone this way 'cause it felt like that may have been happening, but not quickly enough to mitigate the general discomfort.

I like your description, it gives me a fun image of a phablet case with a soft big butt on the back like some mousepads with wrist cushions

ALostInquirer ,

The best thing to do is build the communities here that you are interested in. Do what you can to make them lively and active.

The question as ever remains, though, how does one go about this without coming across poorly? That’s always the tricky part of trying to form new groups and communities, because it’s not quite marketing but it’s in a similar vein to get things going, and it more often than not reads as at best mildly uninteresting or at worst offputting and annoying.

ALostInquirer ,

because the system is designed to check against this!

Is it? Or is it only sustained by, let’s call it, a minimal voter turnout? That is, the system works as expected by those in play so long as voter turnout remains within historical trends which appear to sit under half of all eligible voters during non-presidential election years.

If, however, people were moved to vote more between presidential elections, might that system not potentially begin to falter? Maybe it’s naive, but if one really believes they’ve rigged the system in their favor, don’t you think part of that rigging is built around downplaying the votes outside of those for president?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Huh, so if something seemed a little under-ripe, you might be able to use bananas to help ripen them up? If so, that could be a useful trick!

ALostInquirer OP ,

At best I’ve only cleaned them (fruit & veggies) off then refrigerated them (either open air or sometimes in bags), which probably explains a lot. I’d heard/read of freezing before but somehow missed the blanching part of the advice.

ALostInquirer OP ,

The limitations are severe however and I would never suggest to anyone to use IRC as a text chat server.

I’m a little confused, if all you wanted from it was text chat, isn’t that pretty much exactly what it is as a result of its limitations? Regardless, for the majority of folks I think you’re probably right that it may not be advisable given its limits.

ALostInquirer OP ,

Do you run it as a mostly isolated/self-contained instance, i.e. not federated/connected to others? I’ve read here & there that for some it seems to bog down as they try to operate it as a federated instance.

What are some alternatives to bars that stay open late for folks that don't drink alcohol?

Bars are notable for staying open late, but I’m not really familiar with alternatives that might operate similarly. I think many cafés (at least around my area) tend to close a few hours earlier by comparison, which would be my go-to for an alternative otherwise, so what other options are there?

ALostInquirer OP ,

I omitted my personal reasoning in the OP to avoid sidetracking the conversation, but since it’s had some time to develop & you ask, I just personally don’t like the smell of much alcohol or the erratic behavior it causes. The former I just find unpleasant, meanwhile the latter makes me uncomfortable & anxious on top of being annoyed by the scents.

As someone being sober, I’d feel like I’m half-expected to be responsible for some of those getting drunk around me (even if I’m not, really), and it just makes it hard for me to relax as I’d like.

I could, and I may end up caving and finding a bar with an atmosphere I don’t mind, but I was hoping there might be some alternatives to spaces that I generally just find uncomfortable to be in. Also, and this just comes down to the area I’m in right now, many of the bars have a specific style/theme to them here that I don’t care for whatsoever, at least from the little bit I’ve looked around.

ALostInquirer OP ,

I’ve kinda tried D&D in the past and it’s not really to my tastes tbh. I’d be down for other tabletop games, but I need to look around some more to find groups playing what I might like.

ALostInquirer OP ,

Thanks!
