I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or “just asking questions” stuff.

I’m generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of people’s views.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

ALostInquirer OP ,

Even if it doesn’t really matter which instance you begin with, the experience will be different, and there’s a sense of “pressure” at the point of signup, which doesn’t exist outside of the Fediverse.

Would you not say it’s more like it doesn’t exist to the same degree? Not that that diminishes your point, mind, only that in my experience online I’ve found similar when it comes to other online communities, say when deciding different Discord servers to join and some requiring waiting, reacting to be able to chat, or more rarely, have 2 factor authentication enabled of all things.

Before that, and more a sign of my age I guess, it would have been different forums, different chat rooms, and the like. Each similar in basic functionalities, but different experiences and a different sense of “pressure” to each.

ALostInquirer ,

Sort of a paradox, isn’t it? The folks that want the information will complain about having to talk to someone despite being provided info, yet they won’t read for the information they’ve requested.

Do they want the information, or do they want a baseless basis of complaint? The world may never know.

ALostInquirer ,

If we want people from the microblog fedi to participate we (collectively) need to up our moderation game. (And in my personal opinion instances like .world have grown too large to accomodate any reasonable expectation of moderation, except for select individual communities set up there)

Improved moderation tools would help, however are you familiar with the filtering/muting tools available on Mastodon/Firefish/Misskey? These, coupled with an ability by individual users to block entire instances, help relieve some of the need for more moderators to help by enabling individuals to essentially self-moderate/curate their experiences as desired.

I think both improved moderation and individual filtering/muting tools would help greatly both to encourage microblog folks to join in, and make the experience better for those already here.

Hmm, would you happen to have suggestions for smaller containers to use to make caches? I’ve read of like ammo boxes being decent, but that always struck me as working best for more remote spots, or maybe I’ve overestimated their sizes a bit.

(Also this is how I found that there aren’t many geocaching communities across instances to ask this in, lol)

ALostInquirer ,

do you ever wonder if the world might be slightly happier if there were more bi/pansexual folks?

ALostInquirer OP ,

However there is bad. The fingerprint sensor is highly unreliable. The screen has really bad response times so there’s a lot of ghosting. The speakers are also pretty bad. The camera is exactly what you’d expect as well. Also the update support is extremely limited.

Hmm, I’ve never really found fingerprint sensors to be that useful personally, so of these negatives it sounds like the screen may be the most annoying, but given the price point, not entirely surprising. Thanks!

ALostInquirer OP ,

For the money, you can’t go wrong with Unihertz phones, just don’t expect them to be flagship quality, and be prepared to put up with some minor annoyances.

That’s about what I was thinking, and it sounds like despite some shortcomings they’re generally alright, which is what I wasn’t so sure of, so that’s good to read. Certainly not expecting top of the line given the price point and some of their more, uh, unique designs. Appreciate the reply!

Gojirasaurus: self explanatory

Have they exposed them to radiation in an attempt to resurrect them yet?

ALostInquirer OP ,

So, what comes to mind when I write bullshit jobs are jobs simply for the sake of jobs, like to say that a business is in fact hiring for some unclear reason, or because of some cultural inertia that insists people must be working so they just make up jobs.

A more realistic form would be the weird busywork kind of jobs that seemingly could be automated but just…Aren’t…For some reason, but these may be more like what you describe where it’s not exactly bullshit yet it can feel very close to it at times.

ALostInquirer OP ,

Thanks for the suggestion & info, I didn’t remember there being a book titled as such as I wrote the question, lol

ALostInquirer ,

Isn’t it more unethical to abide unjust laws?

ALostInquirer ,

I recognize what’s legal and not. It’s part of being in a society.

As is recognizing what’s ethical and not, is it not?

ALostInquirer ,

LLMs have already solved a huge amount of real world problems, and continues to do so.

Would you happen to have some examples? I don’t disagree that LLMs have more of a use case and application than the cryptoNFT misapplications of blockchain, but I’m honestly not familiar with where they’ve solved real world problems (and not just demonstrated some research breakthroughs, which while impressive in their own respect do not always extend to immediate applications).

ALostInquirer ,

This stuff is like all over the news, I’m not sure if you’ve lived under a rock this whole time.

Oh, no, I’ve heard it, I’m just skeptical of their accuracy and reliability, and that skepticism has been borne out by the numerous reports of glitching (“hallucinations” as they insist on calling them, in furtherance of their inappropriate personification of the technology). Moreover, I’ve found their mass theft of others’ work to further call into question the creators’ trustworthiness, which has only been compounded by their overselling of their technology’s capabilities while simultaneously suggesting it’s just untenable to log & cite all the sources that they push into it.

It can supposedly do all you describe, but it can’t effectively credit its sources? It can tutor but it can’t even keep basic information straight? Please. It’s impressive technology, but it’s being overblown because the markets favor exaggeration to facts, at least as long as people can be kept enamored with the fantasy they spin.

Did the static shock have a taste, or was it overridden by the lemonade, or do you now associate the taste of shocks with lemonade?

ALostInquirer , (edited )

Out of curiosity, is this linked to a PC running a Linux distro, or Windows/MacOS?

Edit:
To clarify, I meant this as, “Are you using this with a PC running Linux?” vs. whether it was available across different OSes. Sorry for the confusion, but thanks for the replies that address both interests!

ALostInquirer ,

Thanks! I was asking as I’ve heard of some jank with the Windows app (which, kind of to be expected given it’s having to adjust to a different OS), and I think there is a MacOS version too, but haven’t read as much about it & its quality.

ALostInquirer ,

Isn’t this where Mastodon.world kind of comes into play? Off Lemmy but still a federated service, can even pop whatever LemmyWorld status account there in to one’s RSS readers or whatever.

ALostInquirer OP ,

Well, not just content, but also activity like making fake sites to steal credentials, send out phishing emails/texts, and that kind of thing. I guess that may fall under the same point though, of the law not being universal regarding these activities, e.g. talk of some governments ignoring bad actors so long as their activities only target other nations’ citizens.

ALostInquirer ,

This seems to be a serious downside to this system. Anyone who values a persistent profile is putting their precious data in the hands of some random instance that may or may not go bust in the near or (perhaps worse) distant future.

Isn’t this the downside to any system reliant on remote operators?

For any truly valuable data, the solutions remain the same, keep local copies, create backups, and store some backups offsite. As-is it seems like perhaps too many people rely strictly on offsite solutions as their singular data store, which is as bad practice as only having local backups, tbh.

ALostInquirer OP ,

esc.sh/projects/devops-from-scratch/ is a good resource. Most questions you have (that are more specific) are easily searchable on the internet.

Thanks, however while there are some rough notes in the Github link, it looks like this is primarily a series of videos? I was asking for text resources as I prefer those for a variety of reasons, and in this specific case it’s because it’s much easier to copy over any referenced scripts and clearly read commands mentioned.

ALostInquirer OP ,

It’s a lot easier to say to someone, “Hey, here’s a FOSS alternative to this corporate app you already use, it functions the way you’re used to” than “Here’s a FOSS app that does something completely new.”

True, but it does also lead to the question when things go awry or are awkward on the alternatives to, “Why would I use this less reliable/more complicated alternative when [corporate option] ‘just works’?” That reliability/simplicity will more often than not win out in the absence of more novel, useful differences.

ALostInquirer OP ,

Lmao, you’ve been waiting for just this question, haven’t you? Thanks a ton, gave me the sort of laugh I didn’t know I needed!

ALostInquirer OP ,

just what the service does for them.

By that token, that’s the other side of the question, what does Instagram do for those still using it? I’ve seen a few replies that give some interesting insights on this, but Instagram’s never struck me as being as heavily integrated as WhatsApp given its focus, so I’d guess maybe a mix of memes and, admiration, to put it nicely?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Instagram has become more shit in that regard too. But reels really saved it

Reels are their attempt at chasing TikTok, aren’t they? I was of the impression some folks were being put off by them being forcefed to them?

ALostInquirer ,

Are you sure real life toilets weren’t inspired by video game toilets inspired by film toilets?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Thanks, any tips on making shittier? Turns out shitposting’s an art!

ALostInquirer OP ,

Perhaps pair them with patterned shorts or shorts with silly messages for something between cute and uh…However you might describe folks with booty short messaging?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Hmm, I’m not too into the sweater look personally, but I see what you mean! The sweater vest in particular reminded me that a good vest (sweater or otherwise) can be a versatile option for falling somewhere on the range of cute and/or sexy.

ALostInquirer OP ,

You gonna fincrease my wingflap?

ALostInquirer OP ,

The tentacle beings that make up a surprising amount of internet folks, right?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Is that a tentacrotch, or a pen in your pocket?

The creator of Pixelfed announced an upcoming encrypted messenger for the fediverse that will work across the fediverse (mastodon.social)

It will be open source, end to end encrypted using Signal’s double ratchet encryption protocol, and he plans to make it easy for fediverse platforms to integrate it. The beta will release later this month....
