A very bad idea for many reasons, and other people have posted them.

Lemmy.world being large is self inflicted, chosen and promoted by themselves. It’s not a surprise that having 100k users pick the same server is a bad idea if you want to keep the costs down.

Their size is creating many problems in the Lemmy fediverse now, because almost all communities and users are on one instance. Anyone not federating with Lemmy.world has no content.

This is why their decisions matter very much for everyone now also.

Funding the fediverse should be done by individual instance owners who wants to support a healthy network. This is no longer possible if you let your instance become super big, and that’s why it’s a mistake to become super big.

Steam On Linux Usage Spikes To Nearly 2% In July, Larger Marketshare Than Apple macOS (www.phoronix.com)

According to these new numbers from Valve, the Linux customer base is up to 1.96%, or a 0.52% jump over June! That’s a huge jump with normally just moving 0.1% or so in either direction most months… It’s also near an all-time high on a percentage basis going back to the early days of Steam on Linux when it had around a 2%...

Not surprised. Steam on Linux just works. Click a checkbox in settings to use Proton. Then only way it would be easier is if it would automatically detect Proton and use it. I don’t think it does yet?

Because it’s just amazing for new users, much better than Ubuntu.

I run Fresh Tomato on my Asus router, and super happy with it. Tons and tons of functionality that didnt exist at all in asus firmware.

It’s fast, stable and has a much better user interface than default.

I’m really envious. Watching Better Call Saul for the first time again would be magic.

I’m probably on my fifth rerun or something… It’s an incredible show. I would rate these two shows as best of television ever.

I lost interest in it after 5 episodes… It was too slow.

Are you using the web interface? Liftoff mobile app has comment sorting as a setting.

Very good question. I’m actually often not sure what I’m eating. Have to remember that pork is pig, and beef is cow. For some reason I never thought about it even.

Haha there is always someone who dislikes all the space in today’s modern design. I love the new look and it’s why I’m using Thunderbird now as a new user. But I love that we have choice in the Linux community to alter things.

There is theme support for thunderbird so if someone makes a classic theme, you can just download and install it.

But depends on the level of changes you want to make… Maybe not all can be changed with themes?

Your ip will only be visible in the logs of the self hosted instance, if that’s what you are asking.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

True, it depends what you are doing on the instance.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Sounds really expensive… Do you have enough traffic to require so many servers?

What a dumb idea. Not surprised it comes along today when common sense is gone.

They add more and more things to the PK list every day, I stopped listening to it. It’s too stupid.

Has anyone else seen accounts other than your own show up in the top left while the page has not finished loading?

Basically what the title says, while the page is loading sometimes I will see someone else’s username and pfp in the top left corner before it switches to my own when the page finishes loading. I have seen this happen twice now....

Another thing that seems overlooked is that these smart tvs spy on your activities very much. Try installing pihole and you will see your TV chatting constantly and calling home.

Same here. Haven’t even thought about pirating games because Steam is just working.

Seems to me that Spotify and Steam has been really successful preventing piracy in music and games, but the streaming movie industry has failed because they got greedy.

But I thought we went here to get away from the public web services where they monetized everything and put ads and tracking everywhere?

Why would we want this place to become the same? We can just open a web browser and we are in that ad infested place again.

Yep. Sitting on Lemmy.today browsing Lemmy.world posts right now…so I don’t know. Really advice people to not have just one account. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Thanks for making this post, I feel like it can’t be repeated enough. People sit on Lemmy.world instead of creating an account somewhere else where they can literally read and comment on previous posts from Lemmy.world, and then it all gets synked when it’s up again.

It’s like email guys - the entire global email system doesn’t stop because your company email server has technical issues.

No its 1376 instances and about 28000+ communities I believe.

lemmyverse.net/?order=active

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

A lot of smaller communities are not really active, and we’re only created because one person wanted to create it. There is probably no need for 30000+ communities with 2 months of Lemmy popularity :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

What constitutes a main account?

Why not have several with the same subscriptions?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Want help? I could write you a tool if you want, which would list your subs on all instances and show any differences. Literally can be done within a day.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I was thinking just a command line tool, where you could have a config file to put your instances in. Then it would simply use the Lemmy Api and list your subscriptions for each instance. It probably wouldn’t work if you have multi factor Auth on your account though since it needs to be able to log in with just username and password. But you could make your passwords super long to increase security that way.

It would maybe be harder to keep things synchronized but depends on the api. If it’s possible to subscribe to communities from the api, it would be easy.

I’ve been wanting to make something with Go to learn it better, so this could be a nice project.

Of course it would be open source. :)

I will look into it a bit next weekend…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I thought so, it’s not so complicated. This one looks nice.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

No problem at all. I’m itching for some project and actually got started with something like this in Go anyway to learn it better. :) We will see what comes out of it…

I'm starting to find some of the cooler aspects of the wider fediverse.

For instance, Lemmy is a Reddit clone that is picking up some migration after the recent hooha or at Reddit.

The cool thing is that it's federated (same as mastodon, different instances and everything).

This means that you can subscribe to any community on Lemmy, for instance

https://lemmy.world/c/showerthoughts

through its fediverse address, right here on your mastodon instance:

@showerthoughts

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I like how you are talking as if you are on mastadon when you are on Lemmy. This is going to get confusing isn’t it…

Now I want some kind of a Lemmy tag that shows if a post comes from mastadon, just to understand context…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it’s all federated. If you get banned from a community on Lemmy.world, you will not be able to access it from Lemmy.today for example (with your lemmy.today user account).

This is the really super cool part about the fediverse. People don’t realize… This is where the magic is.

If Lemmy.world is down, you still access posts and threads and make posts etc from lemmy.today… And it all syncs when Lemmy.world is up again.

Another mind blowing moment is when you realize you can read and post on Lemmy from Mastadon… So you can combine interacting with Mastadon and Lemmy in the same conversion.

Yes you are right actually. :P

Can’t get that past a programmer can I… :)

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I guess you missed the part about being able to “validate” plugins, entire operating systems, dns resolving etc.

I don’t care about Googles financial problems. I don’t use their services. They can close down YouTube if they don’t have enough paying customers. Same with Google search. Bye Google. And the internet is suddenly a much better place.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Google had said a lot of things during the years. Lying is second nature. As soon as there is a possibility to increase revenue, get on the good side of advertisers, or decrease competition, they will.

You have to understand that they are working under capitalism, where the only thing that matters is to grow your profits every year, or your stocks tank.

They are there for profits, and don’t care at all about the internets health or wellbeing. Maybe some employees do but it doesn’t matter. They don’t decide what to work on.

Google wants the internet sites to be like cable TV. You subscribe to them, you can’t block ads, and you have to run their allowed operating systems and devices. They make all the rules. You can do nothing.
