To be honest, 99% of those have no activity.

People created communities so they would exist in case there was a need.

It’s better to look at how many posts and comments Lemmy has to understand “activity” . I wish the “active user” counts included people who lurk and just upvote / downvote, because most users are lurkers and they don’t show up in the stats.

We are probably at least double the amount of users that show as active right now.

Even bras are too demanding now. Damn.

I got my kid over to Pop OS yesterday. It was so amusing because he has been running Windows all this time and when I use his computer, I get frustrated since it’s so slow and laggy and freezes up etc.

He always tells me “stop being so fast, you have to wait for the computer!”.

We installed PopOS and he was literally amazed how fast it was. He saw that I could open programs and interact with them with no lag and no issues whatsoever. His comment was “I didn’t know it could be like this”.

Exactly.

With all this talk about sync's pricing...

I think now is a great time to remind everyone, like sync’s developer, Lemmy’s developers need to be paid too! The amount of time all the devs put into making lemmy exist, in my opinion, should be worth some of your money. If you can afford it, donating to the people who develop lemmy and/or the people keeping your home...

Why did NLnet sponsor the development for years, and now when Lemmy is successful, they stop sponsoring it?

What was the goal of the sponsorship?

The nlnet.nl/project/Lemmy/ link goes on about how the internet is preditory today and big tech exploits users, and then at the end:

Lemmy is an open source tool that helps users discover what the fediverse has to offer as a decentralized alternative to for example Reddit. Everyone can host their own instance of Lemmy, determine their own moderation policy to keep discussion as civil as you would like and let users share, post, vote and interact without any corporate interference, all from the comfort of their server of choice. Search and discovery on the fediverse becomes easier, more fun and social, without forgoing independence and agency.

Yeah ok, so why stop sponsoring the solution?

Seems like throwing away money.

I think users aren’t smart enough to donate to the Lemmy devs, not enough money at least.

They will donate to apps and even instance owners, but not to the people who make the actual software we are all using.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Lemmy needs at least 3 more years of funding… It just got off the ground here.

I think if people don’t donate, this will turn into open source worked on by volunteers, which means a much slower pace.

Lemmy is much friendlier most of the time, and one of my favorite features is that it’s run by individuals.

People have forgotten these days what it means to chat somewhere without a corporation in the middle.

It’s such a different and better feeling.

I installed Ubuntu in VirtualBox the other day. Right after install, I tried to open the default terminal. It wouldn’t open. Tried many times, restarted, tried again. Would not open.

Searched the web, found like a million other people having the same issue.

Installed Pop OS. It’s beautiful. Everything works, beautiful design, good wallpapers, good default theming.

We have to stop recommending Ubuntu to people.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I think the server is fine. But the desktop experience is always something wrong with. :/

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yup they try to pull this shit all over the world.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

185 comments are mine! :)

And 7 posts…

To the moon!

Also think about how many more lurkers there are. There are many more lurkers than people making posts and comments.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Keep it up. I wish people would bring themself to comment so they count as active users.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That was your third comment, good job :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Well can’t blame you. Lemmy is fun :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Most of us are probably computer nerds right now… And I think a lot of people are afraid of posting their own post. It’s safer to just comment. But Lemmy is a very friendly community, so I think maybe people need to adjust from reddit a bit.

If you are reading this and haven’t made a post, make one now. :) Even if it’s just about asking why nobody posts in a specific community. Usually gets replies.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Think we have to be the change we want to see. I try to post some interesting link every day but it’s harder maybe to find good car or tinker articles.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

They weren’t wrong. There is no need for a panel, you can just type what program you want. It’s not year 2000 anymore.

Besides, Plasma is much more like Windows. It has panels, lots of windows and bugs.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Good response to be honest. :)

Why do you use Google the evil Elf?

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I will order it too, sounds like a good book honestly.

Uhm, how do I order it?

www.versobooks.com/en-gb/…/3035-the-internet-con

This link just says Forthcoming…

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I can’t find a link to buy the book there. I was trying…

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Appearently it’s also big tech’s top word.

But you know, being on Lemmy reminds me of how it once was. We can avoid these fucking leaches and use our own apps and websites.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

The weird name Lacros means Linux And ChRome OS.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Could also be tracking and monitoring, I think those counts as Microsoft features.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Everyone should support small instances. It would be horrible if the entire lemmy network consists of like 10 large instances. And if people don’t use the small instances, that will probably happen after a year or two.

Support all the people who has an instance and wants to contribute to the Lemmy network.

Go sign up right now, if only to have an alternate account when needed.

So they have all these printers connected to their servers I guess. Nice. Not a security risk at all.

Best printer I’ve owned has been Brother. But hp is always at the top of reviews, because hp pays them off I guess.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I gave up also. The entire software experience is just shit and buggy as hell. Avoid.

Google just wants to protect us guys. Pinky promise.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Google still sees all that data and we want privacy from them.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I read an article about this many years ago. They had found that pirated games can increase sales:

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Oh I thought it wasn’t implemented. I forgot I have dns ad blocking :) :)

But this app is worth paying for if you like it. It’s also very cheap, something like 3 dollars or less per month.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s too cheap to be honest. Should be $4.99.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yup this is way over the top for some reason. $50 is more reasonable and I would still hesitate. It’s a good app but there are many others too.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Gcp is Google Cloud Platform so I was a bit confused for a moment.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Upvotes are not abused and doesn’t make people feel like shit.

The lack of upvotes is a much nicer way to handle the situation.

It’s similar to real life, where you give compliments to people you like but you try to avoid people you don’t like. Focus on what you like, not what you don’t like.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That’s an example of when it’s useful, but you probably understand the downsides of it also.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

In this case, I don’t need the knife. Problem solved.

Sometimes you give up things because of bad side effects you don’t want to have.

Maybe you want them, which is fine.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I can only assume these opinion pieces are written by people who use Google for everything they do and trust them.

Dumb fucks, to quote Zuckerberg…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Sure. Trust them to keep that button around… :)
