Super important to sort by Top 6 Hours. If you do that you will see the currently discussed posts. My feed has quite a lot of content because of this.

And yeah, maybe version 0.18.3 fixed issues with Hot but top 6 hours seems great.

This can’t be true. Lemmy world is over 100k users now. And it depends on how many are active.

But yes, it would be very beneficial to the entire lemmy network if many more instances could grow and get active communities. Right now it’s like every community is from Lemmy.world or Lemmy.ml. It’s stupid.

Edit: And I just checked out lemmy.world local… There are tons of posts that doesnt even federate to other instances. So the stability problems are pretty much affecting the entire fediverse now since they are so big.

Yeah ok. Well honestly I think it’s absurd that they have so many users and communities, and I hope people take this time to spread out.

It’s almost comic how everyone is on Lemmy.world when there is over a thousand other instances with zero problems.

I recommend Lemmy.today and specially if you are not afraid to post stuff. Would be nice to get some more local conversions going.

I saw this and I really like that they are trying to improve it and innovate. Nothing has happened for a long time in the desktop innovation area since the web took over.

Lemmy.world is super big AND being attacked constantly. Smaller instances don’t have these issues and they are stable and fast. You can still subscribe to everything from Lemmy.world and your instance will remain up even when Lemmy.world is down.

I’m on lemmy.today and it’s fast and stable. Come join us and you will see.

Basically use the fediverse the way it was meant to be used.

Yeah it’s just getting started, and you can start new communities if you like. But no point starting ones that already exists on other instances.

The amount of local communities doesn’t matter much, Im subscribed to like 100 remote communities anyway. :)

I think it makes sense to use the fediverse in a semi-anonomous way and not strive for centralized login systems since it will lead to being tracked.

That’s the thing about the fediverse, you need to be the change you want to see. Post a lot and contribute.

I will try and post something new every day to help keep new content flowing in. Can’t expect everyone else to just keep us entertained. :)

Yeah I have thought about that, but I think it’s better to have a lot of content than no content. Of course the optimal would be if everyone posted quality content but maybe it’s more important to just have new content now they Lemmy is growing.

I think if Lemmy becomes very big, there will be enough users that people who want a bit higher quality can just skip the meme communities and all that and opt for better quality communities.

There was lots of stories about aliens doing exactly this when I was interested in the topic a decade ago or something. I don’t know how much of that is possible to find on today’s web since it’s all censored and removed now.

Alien tech is much more advanced than what we have here. But I think it’s clear that they are not like humans in the way that they build weapons and measure their status that way. They won’t use technology against us unless they absolutely have to, in self defense.

I’ve used matrix myself, it’s awesome. There is a good chance that it really takes off, the more people gets fed up with surveillance capitalism, which I guess is the best phrase to describe things right now.

It looks nice. But I assume it’s sending messages in clear text? Im using Element a bit (element.io) but it doesn’t feel as fun as Lemmy. I guess it can be great for general chatting in real time though.

I’m on the matrix.org server, it works well. Install something like Element as a client if you like and join some rooms.

Some sample rooms:

This has happened to me and my colleagues as well. You have a conversation and within hours, ads for things mentioned in the conversion shows up on web sites as ads.

It was pretty scary the first time, but it has been going on so long that it seems normal now also.

Fuck big tech.

No that should still work. The server will send a page to your browser, and when the browser renders it, it will request the ad. And your pihole will block the request.

Unless WEI somehow changes how page rendering works but I don’t think so.

Yes exactly. This is what worries me the most since I also run only Linux, and I can’t imagine even being interested in computers anymore if Linux is not allowed on the web. That would be horrific.

It’s 100% critically dangerous and must be stopped.

I love Firefox so much. Specially the built in sync. I can browse something on my phone and open it on my computer later and continue where I left off.

Yup I noticed this also. I used a rooted phone without Google apps on it and so many apps simply refused to work. They use Googles api in the background which means Google finds out about literally everything we do on our phones. They already own the entire operating system but we can’t even run apps without them being in the middle.

This is all similar to using Microsoft Windows or Mac OS so I guess people are so used to this behavior that it’s somehow ok.

But I’m a long term Linux user and I’m used to the OS not calling home and not reporting what apps I use. And this is how it should be. I’m so over big tech it’s not even funny anymore.

I saw it being misused on reddit a lot so I like it. It was common for people to use it as a “i disagree” button, which created a big echo chamber. I read that many people felt that there was no point even posting to a discussion since they knew they would be downvoted.

I think reddit really turned to shit, and I was hoping Lemmy could take another direction here. You can still upvote to support your opinions riding to the top without needing to downvote someone.

I understand this is a hot topic for many though. I guess it depends on what your previous experiences at reddit has been.

And also you mention the word quality control. I’m not sure the majority is some kind of a quality control. I rather hear people’s opinions and make up my own mind. It would feel weird to have other people push down comments I may want to read.

This is why I love small instances as well. I’m on Lemmy.today and it flies.

People seem to be super worried about an instance disappearing for some reason. It has happened to like 3 instances, we are soon 1400 instances.

Also if it would happen, how hard is it to move to another and click subscribe on communities? Takes like 20 minutes if you have many of them.

I really think all this fear is silly. Enjoy Lemmy the way it was meant to be used. Use small instances.

This is exactly how I think about things also. Which is why I dropped this conversation. But it’s a fact that porn changes the perception of sex to a huge degree. But young guys don’t even see it because they don’t have any previous experience to compare to.

Nvidia seems to hate everybody except Windows for some reason.

It’s called money. Microsoft and all these big tech companies have lots of agreements with eachother to support certain choices and ignore others. This is also why Lenovo has very limited choice of amd processors, and if they put that in, it’s in a model with other serious flaws.
