I think it was a breath of fresh air to see something like this on Lemmy. I mean, I love tech but it’s not all that exists in the world. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

They are doing their best, but the users can help by spreading out to smaller instances. It’s also much better for the fediverse as a whole to have many smaller instances instead of a few giant ones.

Maybe you want to join lemmy.today? It’s located in Oregon (western USA) and is literally never down. I know since I’m addicted to Lemmy and I’m on it all the time now… :)

Also who doesnt like that cute little Lemmy icon it has. :) Looks like a very surprised lemming, or very happy one…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

If it does, it’s not hard to fix. :)

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

He is more than open to having several admins :) He is a Linux devops guy who is doing consulting in the area. It makes sense to have several admins due to the “bus factor” or what we shall call it.

Just have to find someone willing to help out. You know anyone?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

So far it hasn’t attracted any bad behavior and the admin is a super nice guy. Works in tech (of course, who doesn’t here, right? ).

I think it’s not a major selling point either, just a bit of “open for all until we get actual problems”.

There was some guy from exploding heads trying to get users to his instance however. They don’t seem very nice at all, and seemingly blocked by a lot of instances.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

This is also why should join a small instance. A large one doesn’t even notice you. A small one does and feels gratitude.

It’s like this with a lot of things in life. The big chains don’t care about you whatsoever. A small boutique on the corner will recognize you and know your name.

I wish we would go back to local farming, grow our own food and trade with neighbour’s for groceries. I don’t like big corps anymore for anything.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I have been thinking about this fog of war a bit. How can we spread word about what’s happening so everyone finds out? Because it matters for choosing an instance. If something is blocked on instance level, it should be clearly said why.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yep it’s important to pick an instance that doesn’t block many other instances, if you want as much content as possible.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Everyone is a lot safer, faster and less vulnerable by being on smaller servers.

It’s not possible to ddos thousands of smaller instances in the same way. And if communities were spread out, taking a few instances down wouldn’t even be noticeable.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I’m not exactly clear over why federation differs either. Its designed not to differ I assume?

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Truly a shit post. :)

There are always negative things to find about companies:

kagi.com/search?q=Mozilla+controversy+&r=se&a… (link you can use even if you don’t have Kagi)

But I think it’s the best of the bunch still. Google is absolutely evil, Brave is using Chromium as a base, so Firefox is the only browser with it’s own engine.

It means they are not affected by the shit Google pulls, at least not stuff they put in their engine. Of course Web Environment Integrity is hostile to the entire planet, but that’s Google in a nutshell.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

These sum up bots are great, no need to even visit the site. I know it may not be great for the website owner but we are just a few users anyway.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Consider removing it so users won’t find it… Because the less value they get from reddit, the more likely it is they will come here instead.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah and then they get unhappy with reddit and find Lemmy. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It won’t if people remain on reddit. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Which query did you run?

I did “Lemmy neovim” and finding good results on Kagi:

kagi.com/search?q=Lemmy+neovim+&r=se&sh=0…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s a good start though. Lemmy should grow, it has everything it needs. Good apps, and it’s decentralized and most important of all : it’s not big tech.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

May have some trust issues with that…

From fucking PayPal?? It’s one of the worst companies in the world and has entire websites dedicated to hating it. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I would use it if it was self hosted and separate from big tech, but using these services when big tech is watching, huge no.

When an individual builds something on the web, it’s for the pleasure of building and seeing it being used by people.

When a corporation builds something, it’s to exploit the user, lock them in, spy on them etc.

This is why Lemmy is such a breath of fresh air, in this web where corporations control all the big sites.

Enterprise era new trek show?

I’m not sure if this is the right community or not, but I’m curious what y’all would think if they came out with a new show set in the Enterprise era. Ent is one of my favorite shows, and I always felt like we got screwed out of some really compelling TV when they ended they stopped making Trek after ENT ended. That era of...

Enterprise is my favorite too from the modern ones.

Start a new community on another instance. This is the power of the fediverse.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I wouldn’t worry about that… There won’t be many posts and looking once per day is enough. :)

If you are a regular Lemmy user, it won’t take any special time to keep an eye on such a small community.

I watch anything with Tom Cruise, I think he is amazing. Always entertaining and a good actor.

The new top gun blew my mind how good it was.

Lol I didn’t know, I haven’t been there in months now. That’s awful… But good for us. :)

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Do your part and try a smaller instance. lemmy.today has not been down even once. I’m a heavy user there.

But if you don’t like that one, pick any other smaller instance and you won’t have this problem.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

While world is down, you can still read everything that was posted and federated before it went down on other instances. It’s not like you suddenly don’t have anything to read (unless you are on here 24 hrs / day).

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

There is a nice button on each instance that turns off new registrations. Once an instance owner has enough users and don’t want to upgrade the instance anymore, he checks that one.

It will be impossible to ddos every Lemmy instance, not very efficiently at least. Now it’s super easy to just bomb Lemmy.world.

I haven’t looked into it but couldn’t those skins be installed on other instances also? Hopefully open source thingies.

It’s all so stupid. The entire stock market basically took off because Nvidia CEO mentioned AI like 50 times and everyone now thinks it’s worth 200 times it’s yearly profit.

We don’t even have AI, we have language models that dig through text and create answers from that.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I guess. I just figured AI would be capable of doing more than feeding already known data back to us. When I was growing up, I was hoping AI would be able to make new conclusions and be wiser than humans.

But maybe we are calling that AGI now.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I’m using it at work too as a devops guy, and it’s been helping a lot. If I don’t know how a certain syntax should look like, I just ask chat gpt and i get full examples that usually work. It’s amazing.

I was learning a bit of go a few days ago and then it was also so much faster to learn by asking chat gpt how to do things in that specific language.

I mean, I don’t want to use a fork either… It would require the person to maintain the fork from upstream and also requires trusting whoever forked it.

Google won’t pull the plug, because then discussions about browser monopoly may flare up again. It’s a small price for them to pay to have Firefox around as a non-threat.

I had a look at their browser share now actually, and their numbers are stalling and not growing anymore. They have about 60% of the users and apple has 20%.

I did that too. :) But I trolled our teacher, not the students. It was really hard to not laugh as she didn’t understand what was happening to her computer, and all in front of the class.

In retrospect it seems a bit cruel actually but I didn’t think like that as a kid. But memories like this reminds me of that - we think differently as adults.
