It isn’t at all a new concept and I’m not sure why people coming from reddit continue to get stuck on it.
Because having communities with an identical name on different instances will fracture the community. Given the hallmarks of the fediverse this is practically intended, to my understanding, but it is bad for initial growth and coherence of posts. This happened on Reddit as well, of course it did, but the way instances are completely separate and communities can have the exact same name compounds the issue.
For now yes, but over time probably no. Multiple communities around the same subject are created on different instances. They’ll compete to become the most active one. Then everyone will subscribe to that one, and it will grow even more. However, if over time you don’t like that one any more (e.g. don’t agree with the mods) you can start a community with the same name somewhere else and compete again to become the most active one (or not, and stay small if that is preferred).
No, you don’t have to subscribe to any of them, much less all of them.
There’s gong to be multiples with a given name because they each exist on their own instance. Instances are mini reddits that can talk to each other, not the same site.
You want redundancy, it’s one of the biggest benefits of federation and decentralization.
I don’t think auto-combining similar named communities is a viable solution, except in the case of users doing it themselves (e.g. multireddits or whatever).
Different communities, even with the “same name” (technically not possible because the @domainis part of the name), will have different vibes based on who participates, who moderates, what instances they’re on, etc. Mashing all of those together would at minimum, be a bad user experience and at worst, invite tons of harassment from ‘troll’ communities.
My comment will only mean something if you understand that I am actually a moderate. I have voted for both parties. I don’t vote for politicians. I vote for policies. Policies that I think make sense and actually work. As a for instance I am against the banning of abortion, but think there should be some time limit based on...
Was reading an answer to the question about fresh Amazon tablet and saw this. They used up the question as a hook to promote their browser. Pretty sure I’m avoiding Brave from now on....
You can in fact change the handler to NewPipe! Navigate in your settings to wherever your screen is that shows you a list of all your apps. Navigate to YouTube (assuming you have that installed, skip this step if you don’t have it installed), and find the “Open by default” option (might be named differently depending on your Android provider), and disallow the option to open supported links. Now go back to your apps list and find whatever NewPipe application you use (I use the Sponsorblock fork for instance), click the “Open by default” option again, make sure it’s enabled, then there should be a list of links supported. For the types of links you want supported, make sure they have a check box by it, and you should be good!
For instance I know i can navigate to lemmy.ml/c/[email protected] to see the “daystrominstitute” community at startrek.website, but is there a way where I can see all (or even just the most popular) communites at startrek.website, while still logged into my lemmy.ml instance (so i can just hit the subscribe...
Yes, you could just go to startrek.website/communities for the list of communities on that particular instance.
However, subscribing to a community on an instance where you do not have an account takes a few extra steps.
When looking at the list of communities on another instance where you do not have an account, clicking the Subscribe link from the list will result in a popup stating that you’re not logged in and if you click on the community name, a Subscribe button will not be shown.
However, most, if not all, communities will have instructions in the sidebar for how to subscribe from your main instance without the need for creating an account on the instance where that community resides.
To do this using the example of the startrek.website instance, if you wish to subscribe to the daystrominstitute community, you would enter “!daystrominstitute” into the search field on your main Lemmy instance where you are logged in.
Generally the first item in the results will be a link back to that community, which will look like:
“Daystrom [email protected] - 448 subscribers”
Click that link and you will see the content of that community again, but now notice that a Subscribe button will be shown in the sidebar.
Clicking Subscribe may result in a note that says “Subscribe pending”, which I believe is due to some syncing that needs to occur between instances. Just give it a few minutes and then that community will appear in your list of subscribed communities.
You can now read, post and reply to that community just as if you had an account on that instance.
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !lemmyshitpost, !lemmybewholesome
Genuine question, because the Lemmy app I’m using right now (Thunder) doesn’t show instances next to user names, and I haven’t generally been paying attention to which instances host which communities. What about kbin makes it attractive to inquisitive people?
A multi-community would be all communities with a certain name, across all instances. It would prevent powermods from being a problem on Lemmy. i think it should be notated with m/, just like communities but with m instead of c.
Yes, I know about that and I think it’s working as intended, only the message sucks. I already changed it today, but now that I’m looking at it again, it still sucks :/
Do you have any idea for a better message? There are two messages currently, one for Lemmy users and one for non-Lemmy users:
Lemmy users message: Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this:
Non-Lemmy users message: Hi there! The links in your text lead away from the user’s instance, here are fixed links that stay on each user’s instance:
I have a question to all of you who have subscribed to Lemmy groups from Fediverse projects that aren't Lemmy. Who follow Lemmy groups from e.g. #Mastodon, #GlitchSoc, #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #MissKey, what's still called #CalcKey, #FoundKey, #Mitra, #GoToSocial, #Socialhome, #Friendica etc., but also #kbin. And I sincerely hope that I'm not the only subscriber to this entire group who isn't on Lemmy.
My question is: If a Lemmy post contains an image or any other media, can you see it?
I'm on #Hubzilla. And when someone posts something with an image in it, I can see the post, but I can't see the image. When someone posts something with a video in it, I can't see the video either.
I can see images in comments with no problem. But I can't see them in posts.
How about you on Mastodon? Or on CalcKey? Or on /kbin? Or elsewhere?
I'm asking and hoping for replies because I need to find out if the issue is on Lemmy's or on Hubzilla's side so I can file a bug report.
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !macrophotography
@curiosityLynx The name is written out fully automatically when I click "Add comment"; kbin, the instance where I am, will put full identifier automatically. But on posting it only shows the "id name" without "instance part", but links to the account. Like in this situation with your name. My guess is, the person is still tagged correctly and only the HTML link name is shown in the browser.
I just wish it would link to the actual post or reply directly, instead the person. With the ability to preview on mouse hover (just like how it works on person accounts, at least for me on the desktop browser). This would make discussions more clear.
@Ferk Interesting. I have checked the link from you, to see it from their perspective. And sure enough that won't show me a link too, BUT... The guy from kglitch.social has a link. What I think happening is following: Because I respond to the guy in the same instance kbin.social, it won't put the entire name. I know this from Mastodon, where if we are in the same instance, I don't need to put the instance id to tag someone. And because the guy from kglitch is not in the same instance, it will automatically create a full id reference, which every instance render as a link.
Hopefully I could explain what I think is happening. Maybe it is not an issue with kglitch itself, but how Kbin works.
Whole idea is weird and as of now its lacking features. Like no ability to look on the other instance local feed without registrating there (at least not in apps i use). Also needing to type whole adress with instance name if you want some community from other instance is unhandy.
Also, as far as i understand, there can be the same communities on different instances, so you could subscribe to, idk, cat community on lemmy.ml, but not see anything from cat community on lemmy.world. If its true its kinda stupid, i think there should be a way to associate comunities across fedarated instances.
Hell, even registration is kinda messed up. As lemmy.world shown, you easilly can sign up on overpopulated instances which would drop several times a day. Not sure, it probably fixed for now, but that was a problem when i started.
So far i like the idea and want it to succeed and become popular. But with how elitist people here are usually towards users from other platforms and with overall roughness it kinda seems unlikelly. Maybe it will change when current apps get better, or reddit app developers make versions for lemmy, idk.
Agreeing that it's not a seamless transition in user experience from Reddit to Lemmy/kbin. But one thing that at least the instance that I'm on (kbin.social) makes easy is subscribing to various communities (or magazines, which is what they are called on kbin):
I go to the Magazines screen in kbin.social, type.in the general topic I'm interested in (in your example, cats). The search results in kbin.social bring me all of the magazines and communities that have cat in the name, and I subscribe to them all. (Meaning, I don't have to type out the full community address.)
Yes, a lot of it will be redundant and if I don't subscribe to specific communities I may miss some stuff. But I can say that now I have a ton pf.contwct that I'm interested in my "Subscribed" feed (similar to the home feed on Reddit).
Hi. Is there a tool to see fastest growing Lemmy communities? It’s easy to see the big communities, but it would be helpful to see fast growing communities to join in with community building for things you may have an interest in. is there anything that currently does this?

The specificity and quantity of information the text and multimedia platform can access poses a risk to most users, if it falls into the wrong hands or is used to target them, tech experts agree....
I’m not sure what defederating from them solves in regards to this topic. If they wanted Lemmy, Kbin, & Mastodon’s data, they could always just set up another instance with a different domain name and not publicly announce what that domain name is, and we would have no idea who to defederate from. Or they could just scrape the data from the web page, no federation needed.
I don’t want to see their content, which is a valid reason to defederate (or block, if that were possible at the user level) imo. But defederating because we want to stop them from getting our data is not even slightly effective, so I think it makes an unconvincing argument.
As an outsider, please take these helpful suggestions:
The logging-in process is messed up. For the longest time I couldn’t log into any of the mobile apps (even though on the desktop it worked fine). The error messages were mostly not helpful.
Even now, I still get error messages that ask me to pick a language for some reason. This is after I’ve already typed up a comment and I am trying to post it. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t, but you could see how it would be a PITA when on mobile and all you wanted to do was write a short response.
Still no real idea what “instances” are and no idea if I am missing out on entire subs because I am on .world. No clue. Do people on .world only see this? 🤷
The layout on the website is barely passable. The link to go see a comment that was posted for you is just in an awkward location. I’m almost never sure what sub a post is coming from because the name of the person, the language it is in, and some other stuff is all fairly indistinguishable. Like seriously, there has to be someone on the Lemmy team that has some kind of graphic design background who could pipe in and spice up the UI a little.
There are random hangouts for seemingly no reason. Is it because of how much the Lemmy population has exploded over the last few weeks or problems with a link or what? Some feedback would be super helpful.
Why so many subs (are they called subs here?) with zero content. Not even like old content… literally go there and nothing is posted. At all. That is not conducive to growing a sub. If there are squatters who came here and loaded up on a bunch of sub names just to say they have them, and are not doing anything with those subs, then take the name back. No one is going to post a comment to a sub with zero threads. This is only hurting the community.

So…I own a .com domain that’s really, really good as far as being lemmy-related (it has lemmy in the name).
Not exactly a s self-hosted question, and I’m an old geek so I can arrange hosting and set things up myself when I have time, but anyone have a guess as to my traffic costs if I decide to turn it into a federated lemmy instance and open it up to the public? Just looking for thoughts and opinions.
Someone signed up with that name on our instance on June 24, and Lemmy will not allow multiple accounts with the same name. This is two days after your kbin account was created; did you attempt to create an account on here then?
Do I understand correctly that I have to subscribe to 5 different NoStupidQuestions on 5 different instances?
