peregus ,

Because you can’t just copy the files of a running DB (if I got what you mean).

peregus ,

I would never deploy Compose in any kind of production environment.

May I ask you why?

peregus , (edited )

Question: why don’t you crate your own Grafana dashboard? Do you have too many servers?

peregus ,

Don’t forget that self hosting without proper knowledge is more dangerous than just giving away data to the big techs!

peregus ,

With Proton you could get emails, calendar, contacts, drive for a fair price and good privacy, for example.

peregus ,

Let’s start with the basics: is dev.to self hosted? 😁

peregus OP ,

Forget everything that I’ve written, I just need to assign 6 VLAN (tagged, coming in from enp2s0) to 6 NICs (untagged to: enp9s1f0, enp9s1f1, enp9s2f0, enp9s2f1, enp10s1f0, enp10s1f1).

peregus OP ,

Yes, but…how do I do that?

peregus OP ,

I don’t need to assign VLANs to VMs, I need to assign them to 6 phisical NICs (tha fact that they are installed in the same machine where there is Proxmox is irrelevant).

peregus OP ,

Mmm…I’m notr trying to virtualize anything. I’ll edit the post to make it clear.

peregus OP ,

I’ve just edited the original post to make clear that Proxmox has nothing to do in this picture, it just is installed in the same PC where the NICs are. What I need it just assign 6 VLAN (tagged, coming in from enp2s0) to 6 NICs (untagged to: enp9s1f0, enp9s1f1, enp9s2f0, enp9s2f1, enp10s1f0, enp10s1f1).

peregus OP ,

Of course! But I must advice that you will be limited to 1/0,5Gbps! 😁

peregus OP ,

That’s it, thanks!!! So easy!!! Thanks a lot!

I know that it would be better to use a switch, but I would need a 10Gbps (or 2,5Gbps, do they exists) switch with 2 sfp+ port (1 for Internet connection and the second one for the server). In this way I’ve just bought the 3 old NIC for 25€ and that’s it. I know that they will consume way more than the switch, but how many years do I need to break even?

peregus OP ,

There are no switches in play!

peregus OP ,

OPNsense is in one PC (and it only works as router/firewall), Proxmox is on another PC with all the NICs and Proxmos and it will also work as switch.

peregus OP ,

I know that you are right…sorry, but…

peregus OP ,

I Just didn’t know how to do it; @Kryesh in its post up here told me. Pretty easy!

peregus , (edited )

Use a VPN like Wireguard. I’d suggest putting the laptop into a DMZ, if you have a good router. If you don’t…buy a 30/40€ Fujitsu Futuro S720/920 and use It as an OPNsense router (video tutorial)

peregus ,

Well, it’s a Wireguard client that connects to somebody else’s server! I prefer not to let that “somebody else” enter my network. Since it’s pretty easy, I run my own Wireguard server!

peregus ,

This would also lead to safer cars because they are better roadworthy

Well, I’m not sure about this literally about car and figuratively about selfhosted: not all the selfhoster have the skills to selfhost, they just think they have and so for the car. If you screw up a service/the whole server you may lose all your data or be at the mercy of some data kidnapper, if you screw up your car brakes, well…bye bye.

In both cases, we don’t have enough skilled people to have that 25% selfhoster (but not even one tenth) nor 25% car self repair drivers. And this is not as bad as it sounds: we can’t be skilled about everything that we need, it’s just impossible! And that’s why we have society!

You can find an external SATA power supply

[Jellyfin] PCIe x4 graphic card for transcoding

I have only a PCIe 2.0 x4 and a PCIe 3.0 x16 free and I need to install a 10Gbps SFP+ card and a graphic card for transcoding with Jellyfin (the CPU is an old E5-2620 v2). Since I can’t find any SFP+ card that is x4, do you know a graphic card with decent transcoding capabilities (I’d day 2 4K simultaneously) that is only...

peregus OP ,

Yes, it’s full lenngth. Thanks!

peregus OP ,

I already have the server, it doesn’t make any sense to change it. Above all, as someone else has pointed, the 4 lanes are enough for transcoding.

peregus OP ,

Yes, I would install the video cars in the second PCI slot, but the motherboard has an integrated video card, does that count? By the way, I don’t have alternatives, if it will not boot, I will not use the graphic card. Thanks!

peregus OP ,

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, I’ll keep that in mind!

peregus OP ,

Thanks!

peregus OP ,

Thanks!

peregus OP ,

Damn, I ordered mine yesterday! 🙈 Let me know. Thanks!

peregus OP ,

Because it may be needed?

peregus OP , (edited )

Because some player can’t play the original file, because the bandwidth sometimes it it’s not enough, etc.

peregus OP ,

Thanks a lot!

peregus ,

100TB??? What the heck did you store in there? A lot of “Linux ISOs”, ok, I get it, but how many GB is each? Some may be 10/20GB, but I guess that most of them are about 2/4GB. Some images of old drives, ok (some TB), and then?

peregus ,

Netflix streams 1080 videos at a maximum bitrate of 5Mbps. 5Mbps * 60 seconds * 90 minutes / 8bit / 1024 = 3.3GB

peregus ,

It’s also possible to use Telegraf. I use it on different machines that sends data to InfluxDB that are displayed with Grafana

peregus ,

If you’d like to sell a couple of drivers and you’re in Europe, contact me.

peregus ,

Why do firewall rules need to resolve FQDNs?

peregus , (edited )

@kakes would be better to have the server on a separated VLAN

peregus ,

Sorry, but I still don’t understand, what’s the need for that?

peregus ,

What’s the need of the public IP in the firewall rules?

peregus ,

I’m curious to know in which case is useful to know the public IP in a firewall rule because I’ve never used it.

peregus ,

To allow access from a friend you need his public IP, not yours.

peregus ,

Dude, just chill! I didn’t think that your answer made sense in the first place and that’s why I’ve asked why you wrote that sentence. I’m not the one that reply to a comment saying “You’re wrong!”, unless I’m more than sure about what I’m talking, otherwise, and in this case I wasn’t sure and I wanted to know your point. I’m here to give my point of view and also to LEARN from others and this is why I kept asking you what was the need of resolving a DNS in a firewall rule, so that maybe I could start using those rules too. On the other side, if you understood that your answer didn’t make sense, you simply could have just said it and not waste mine and your time. I think that we ALL are here to share idea and knowledge and that NO ONE is perfect, me in the first place!

peregus ,

You’ve clarified your thought to a normal standard, as you didn’t previously. Learn to say “I was wrong” when you are wrong!

Edit: could I have said in the first place that I thought that you were wrong? Probably yes and I’ll keep that in mind.

Nextcloud appreciation post

After months of waiting, I finally got myself an instance with Libre Cloud. I was expecting basic file storage with a few goodies but boy, this is soooo much more. I am amaze by how complete this is!!! Apps let me configure my instance to fit everything I need, my workflow is now crazy fast and I can finally say goodbye to...

peregus ,

I was surprised to know that there is no tool to pass from Nextcloud to AIO.

peregus ,

@neon_arch I think that a couple of lines explaining what websurfx is would be useful to a lot of users, instead of point them to another post.

peregus ,

I’m using Cloud flare, I’ll look into it, thanks!
