Mostly in alphabetical order going down my steam list:
Great stories great games: Tales of Symphonia and Vesperia, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky trilogy, Metal Gear Solid, 2, and 3, Subnautica, Secret of Mana, Legend of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Hollow Knight, Spec Ops: The Line, A Hat in Time, Hades, Doom, Deus Ex, Eternal Sonata, F.E.A.R., FF6, FF13-2, Nier Replicant & Automata, Sleeping Dogs, Undertale, Valkyria Chronicles (admittedly haven’t beaten it though).
Mindless fun simple stories: Ys (almost any of them), My Time at Portia or Sandrock, Resident Evil games, Rune Factory 4 and 5, Harvest Moon 64 and Friends of Mineral Town, Stray, Amnesia, Armored Core 6, Have a Nice Death, I am Setsuna, Life is Strange, Neon White, Cyberpunk 2077.
If you had to twist my arm I’d give you these variations of top recommendations.
Best typical JRPG: Tales of Symphonia
Best Metroidvania: Hollow Knight
Best where choices matter: Undertale
Best fps: Spec Ops: The Line
Best comfy story: My Time at Portia
Best environmental storytelling: Subnautica
Best simple stories in stories: A Hat in Time
Best story with a bajillion endings and things to keep playing for: Nier Automata (play Replicant too!)
Should I play Noita if it mostly caught my eye because of the cool physics? Hades and Vampire Survivors are the two roguelikes that finally clicked for me.
i’m the exact opposite. all my computers are macs so I’ve been gaming on PS5 for years. picked up an sd oled mostly to play hades, but have finished dead island 2, ghsot of tsushima and hogwarts legacy on it. the barrier to entry to play a game is so low with the steamdecks suspend feature, I can just pick it up and be playing 5 seconds later.
Maybe you’ve just grown out of gaming. The Steam Deck has it’s issues, but the sheer amount of different great games playable on it is debatably it’s greatest strength. Hades, Armored Core, Persona, Dark Souls, pokemon romhacks, etc.
For me it is opening credits sequence in Nier Automata, Shadowlord’s castle in Nier Replicant and AI reveal in MGS2. All these three games are masterclass in storytelling.
Hades II is the most played Steam Deck game for May 2024, with the original also high up in the list.
Even though it’s in Early Access and clearly unfinished, Hades II has already won over the hearts of many gamers, shooting up to a Very Positive rating on Steam from over 37,000 players leaving their thoughts on it.
Sorted by hours played top to bottom here’s May 2024’s most played Steam Deck games:
Grand Theft Auto V
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT
The original article contains 146 words, the summary contains 89 words. Saved 39%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Cheap is relative, for me Hades was very cheap but steam changed the default price adjustment for my country and now Hades II cost almost twice for what I paid for Hades I.
Indie also covers an enormous financial area. People generally group games into AAA, Some nebulous middle ground games that are generally produced by the major studios but aren’t AAA and Indie.
There is a difference between indie games that sell millions of copies vs dozens and this lack of discrepancy makes this complex. I once pirated a game called infernium after seeing a friend play it on switch, then learnt that it’s an absolutely tiny game by a solo developer. I happened to adore the level design and lore of that game so much that I bought it on steam and then bought all of his other games too just to support him.
On the flipside, we refer to a game like Hades as indie. I love supergiant games and have purchased all their titles but I would have felt zero remorse at pirating Hades.
Maybe the only thing that I feel is sad in all of this is that the massive AAA games takes years to be cracked nowadays, which means only indie games are pirateable. I don’t like the unfair dichotomy this creates. There are probably a reasonable amount of people who pirate indie games and buy AAA games for this reason, and that’s bad for industry.
Fun related fact: both Hades and Hades II are also mostly Lua scripts. And they ship the source code with both games so you can just go look at things like how fishing probabilities are implemented directly in the script.
Not many are officially supported, but there are a few. Baldur’s Gate 3 is one surprising example. Many Paradox games are also supported, like Cities Skylines. Stardew Valley, Terraria and Hades as well.
It's the Day of Zeus / Jupiter's Day / #Thursday! ⚡
"The gods then drew lots for a share of the rule. #Zeus won the lordship of the sky, #Poseidon that of the sea, and Plouton the rule of Hades' realm."

“Inspired” by the Square-Enix putting their foot in their mouth thread, I thought it’d be interesting to make a little thread about indie games. People always talk about wanting to try different, cheaper titles, but with how hard it is to get good gaming news and the state of advertisement/marketing, word of mouth tends to...
Honorable mention for all of the Diablo’s really, been playing them since the first one, and all of the Fallouts, playing since the 2nd. Shoutout to my X-Com homies.
Thanks. Also now realizing that picking just 10 is super hard and looking back at my list there’s like 2 strong honorable mentions for every title in my list (some might even be swappable).
Just off the top of my head, a few others I’d rate as A-tier or S-tier all-time-greats in my personal list:
Disco Elysium
Final Fantasy 7
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Hades
Dishonored
Banjo Kazooie
Doom (2016)
Dead Space
Psychonauts 2 (part 1 is also A-tier)
GTA 5
Case of the Golden Idol
Mass Effect 2
Paradise Killer
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (both parts are excellent)
