I usually have those kind of things in the background while I cook or wash dishes.

magic_lobster_party ,

I just want games focused on good old fashioned deathmatches. Just roam around the map and shoot whatever you see. No pressure on team tactics.

Playing Half Life multiplayer was so fun during the 25 year anniversary.

I like Douglas Crockford’s talks about the “good parts” of JavaScript. They’re old and probably a bit outdated, but he explain quite well the history and why JavaScript is the way like it is.

It clicked for me when I saw them the first time. Still hate JavaScript though.

magic_lobster_party ,

Just accept it, all languages suck

magic_lobster_party ,

That’s why Haskell is so loved. Nobody uses it.

magic_lobster_party ,

They also thought the best thing to take from Python is that version 3 should not be backwards compatible with version 2

magic_lobster_party ,

He also showed that JavaScript has more resemblance to functional programming languages rather than object oriented ones. If you try to treat it as an object oriented language like Java (like the seem to imply), you will have a bad time.

This has changed with TypeScript though.

Where I’m working we’re heavily using Spark, which kind of blocks us from upgrading. There seem to be ways to get Scala 3 to work, but we also have old terribly written baggage code no one understands. Just upgrading between 2.12 to 2.13 was a journey.

Apple knows how to market their stuff. They’ve built a strong reputation among their customers.

Best way of playing Wipeout these days?

So…after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch…I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series…was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?...

magic_lobster_party ,

was 2097 the best one?

In my opinion, yes. It’s the one that best captures the feeling. It’s has that gritty industrial look and the best music.

The later ones are also good, but they’re a bit too “clean futuristic” to scratch my Wipeout itch.

First one hasn’t aged as well. Mainly because if you bump into a wall ever so slightly, you lose most of your speed. 2097 and onward are better at keeping your momentum going. I also love those spark effects that come when bumping into walls in 2097.

magic_lobster_party ,

todos

I found a simple trick against this: just remove them. Accept it ain’t gonna happen man.

magic_lobster_party ,

It’s mostly a joke, but often when I find todos they’re so old they’re no longer relevant.

Of course you shouldn’t blindly remove todos.

People who are capable of installing Linux are probably already aware of it. Most people when they buy a laptop is to have something that just works out of the box. Just open the laptop lid and it’s welcoming you with the setup process. Telling them how to install a live USB is already too much information.

magic_lobster_party ,

Russians don’t seem to be aware that just because it’s a stealth aircraft doesn’t mean they can just park it out in the open.

magic_lobster_party ,

I'd rather have no comments than wrong comments.

I’ve seen cases of outdated comments in the same line of code it’s describing. People suck at maintaining comments.

magic_lobster_party ,

Do comment the why

In this day and age of source control I don’t think this is fully necessary. If you want to know the why, you can look into the commit history and see which ticket is connected to it. There you might even see the discussions around the ticket as well. But this requires good source control discipline.

It has helped me many times.

magic_lobster_party ,

It's like if you were bilingual, you don't write every sentence in both languages, because that is twice as much text to maintain (and read).

This is a very good analogy. And just like with natural languages, you might have an easier time expressing an idea in one language but not the other. Comments should provide information that you find difficult to express with code.

magic_lobster_party ,

You can also do that if you think it’s useful.

Going back to the original ticket can offer far more info than what any “why” comment can give. You can see how old it is, if there are any connected tickets, who were involved with it, step by step instructions how to reproduce the bug, etc.

magic_lobster_party ,

That skull crushing weapon is so satisfying to watch.

Judging from the trailer it looks like we will see more open arenas. Good to see they won’t try to make a repeat of Eternal and instead try new ideas. Looking forward to see how it plays out.

magic_lobster_party ,

Technically the shield is a chainsaw

magic_lobster_party ,

There’s the stone imps who can only be damaged with the full auto mod (or super weapons).

magic_lobster_party ,

Why should I do that?

magic_lobster_party ,

Smart pointers are like pointers, but without the same burden of having to worry about memory leaks.

magic_lobster_party ,

I wonder what went into their minds when they decided on coding conventions for C++ standard library. Like, what’s up with that weird ass indentation scheme?

magic_lobster_party ,

Why spend 15 minutes to get the answer when it can be explained in a few paragraphs?

magic_lobster_party ,

When the internet is riddled with clickbait and sensational headlines, we’re getting quite protective of where we want to put our attention.

magic_lobster_party ,

There’s nothing wrong with wanting a short TL;DW summary. I’ve already seen the video a while ago, but I don’t remember all the exact details.

magic_lobster_party ,

GTA 3 has a silent protagonist and most of the dialogue takes place in mission cutscenes. It’s a very simplistic game in comparison to GTA 4.

If you’re after a grounded experience with characters that feel real, then yes it paid off.

magic_lobster_party ,

That’s San Andreas

magic_lobster_party ,

Depends on what you consider good game. GTA 3 is more arcadey in a way. GTA 4 is more immersive. They’re very different.

magic_lobster_party , (edited )

A more proper title would be “study finds 268% higher failure rates for poorly planned software projects”.

“Agile” as a word is mostly an excuse of poor planners for their poor planning skills.

magic_lobster_party , (edited )

In one the worst “poor planning” projects I’ve been in the product owner just kept sneaking in new “high priority” issues to the top of the backlog throughout the sprint. I don’t think we had a single sprint where we ended up with fewer open issues in the backlog than when we started.

Needless to say, he was the main reason why I quit.

magic_lobster_party ,

I don’t know how many times I have been waiting for the product manager to get out of their meeting so they can help me clarify what they really mean with their "high priority" ticket only consisting a vague title.

magic_lobster_party ,

It’s an amazing game and addicting once you get into it. If you think Quake and Devil May Cry sounds like a fun combo, this is the game.

Just be aware the game isn’t finished yet. The last few levels are missing.

magic_lobster_party ,

Yeah, I thought the game was good value when there was only Act 1, and now the game is more than double that.

magic_lobster_party ,

Don’t underestimate how much Intel can fuck up.

magic_lobster_party ,

I don’t think ARM will compete in the gaming market anytime soon, and Intel has already fucked up that market for themselves.

ARM will probably gain a sizable portion of the office laptop share instead. Many people want to bring their laptop to a conference room without the charger and all that stuff. A good battery life is more prioritized in these cases than raw power.

magic_lobster_party ,

As a point of comparison, 360 has 512MB RAM. HL2 was targeting PCs comparable to PS3/360, but somehow they got it working on an Xbox.

magic_lobster_party ,

It’s a bit hit and miss. Some parts are glorious. Other parts are just frustrating.

There’s too many parts that are “Oh you failed this jump? Now you need to start all over again”. I’m thinking especially on that Yoshi mission in Ricco Harbor.

Or that lilly pad bonus level on that island that you must bring Yoshi to, but Yoshi can’t swim so you need to ride those slow ass boats. Ensure you don’t miss any jump, because then you need to start all over again.

The visuals are incredible for its time. The water is one of the most beautiful on that generation.

It’s a game that could’ve benefited from being easier, or at least be more forgiving. I just want to soak in all the visuals.

Closes Steam, sets latest survey date to 1 year ago, and then opens Steam again.

I guess it’s so you can fill in the survey again. Not sure if it actually works.

magic_lobster_party ,

And spending money only gives the illusion of making a difference, because now especially when you’ve proven you’re a money spending customer, they don’t want to lose you.

magic_lobster_party ,

I’m pleasantly surprised Linux is way ahead of OSX. This looks really good!

magic_lobster_party ,

Not many are officially supported, but there are a few. Baldur’s Gate 3 is one surprising example. Many Paradox games are also supported, like Cities Skylines. Stardew Valley, Terraria and Hades as well.

New FPS Built Using Doom Tech Is Better Than Most AAA Shooters (kotaku.com)

Things aren’t looking good for me. I’m a few levels into Selaco, a new FPS out now on Steam, and I’m stuck behind a bar as a group of sci-fi soldiers unload their rifles and shotguns into my hiding spot. I’m also low on health. So yeah, a bad spot to be in. I take a deep breath and try something....

magic_lobster_party ,

I’m not the same person, but I’ve played a few levels now. I think it’s really good, especially for being early access. Reminds me of original Half Life, so if you like that kind of game it’s a strong recommend!
