Recently decided to try out @bookwyrm as a GoodReads replacement. It's refreshingly modern, with an effective import tool to bring my library over.

I don't have much of a network there, but then I didn't really use the GoodReads social features. My user over there is @YouNaughtyMonsters (thanks Iain M Banks!)

Feels good to be using a @fediverse platform!

lebigz ,

Oh I see, oops. Sorry for tagging you then. I also just realised that bookwyrm is a different thing from Lemmy, but just on the fediverse as well, so my link does not make sense in any way

Staring into your soul and testing user/community name collision

Someone raised an interesting question on Lemmy: what happens when a community and user have the same name, and someone tags that name from non-Lemmy software.

@cats is about to find out.

hmm I received this comment in my inbox but didn’t get anything from the post. Also I can’t access your first link, not sure which end the issue is on

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Returns To Top 10 Streaming Chart

That one was incredible. I still feel drawn to question, despite the episode’s resolution, whether being in the fields is preferable. Wonderful take on the ignorance is bliss theme

Such a well done mashup, really clever and incredible talent on display. I’m a huge Broadway fan and a massive trekkie so this was just a love letter to me and I’m beyond grateful. SNW is always a welcome surprise, every week.

Jonathan Frakes on Directing Next Generation, Lower Decks

This interview goes assorted places, but it has a small interesting bit about next year's Discovery finale.

“I directed the first half of the finale of Season 5, which turned out to be the real finale... And then [‘Discovery’ executive producer and director] Olatunde Osunsanmi had to go back up and do two or three days of new stuff to actually make the finale the finale." https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/jonathan-frakes-star-trek-director-strange-new-worlds-lower-decks-crossover-1235680140/

@billmason @porthos @startrek I don't think that CBS had all the rights to all ST properties. Today CBS, Viacom and Paramount are united again, but not before end of 2019. For example: https://gizmodo.com/star-trek-discoverys-version-of-the-enterprise-had-to-1825276401

billmason OP ,
@billmason@mastodon.social avatar

@deafmutex @porthos @startrek Yes, the right to the first 10 movies at that point belonged to Viacom, who made them under license from CBS. But that's neither here or there to what Discovery was doing.

Also, the story that the Enterprise was changed in Discovery because of rights/legal issues has been debunked. https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-discovery-enterprise-design-legal/

I had 3 communities I was trying to build up and now, nothing. I finally made a new Lemmy account, but I don’t know if I want to restart those communities.

I’m thinking about starting my own instance (with blackjack and hookers of course) but that has its own set of headaches. I just want to make content, not spend my day being an admin.

Chickerino ,

yea, im still hoping that vlemmy’s just having some major technical issues and will come back soon but judging by some evidence (mainly the donation/github pages being deleted), i dont know if that’ll ever happen

Do you think potential candidates should be reimbursed in some form for taking assessments that are required by the employer in order to be considered for employment?

Also, should this be available for only job candidates who are not considered for the position?

Or should it go for every job candidate, even the ones that get the position?

Thanks for reading and being your most precious and sensual self ❤️.

The first half hour shouldn’t be free either.

aksdb ,

I did a 2 day long “bootcamp” for the company I now work at. Basically two days working directly alongside my future colleagues but on a non-product related exercise task. I really appreciated it. First day was still weird and I was nervous, but on the second day it already felt normal and all conversations were extremely relaxed.

I got involved in the daily team routine, took part in coffee talks, etc

Doing the actual task was just time filler for getting a feeling of the new workplace and for them to see if I fit in.

Especially thanks to the second day I knew I loved it there and that switching job will be the right move.

This was before Covid, though. Today this probably wouldn’t work anymore, with most people working from home and most meetings being remote anyway.

What I am saying is: it’s not just for the company that hires you, it’s also for yourself. Expecially if you have to quit another job first.

[OC] Monjuïc Castle

Yesterday, we took a funicular (not pictured, unfortunately) and a cable car up to the Monjuïc Castle fortress. It's an impressive structure with excellent views of the city and there's an active park on the surrounding grounds, but it has a dark history. On multiple occasions, its cannon have been turned on the city below to administer collective punishment for resistance to the crown in Madrid. The fortress has also been the site of numerous atrocities. Look up the Bombardment of Barcelona (1842) for example.

@pics

One of the fort's ramparts. This shot reminds me of the forts in San Juan.
A view of the Barcelona coast from the gondola ride up to the fort.
A view of the massive seaport to the southwest of the fort. A big gun on a turret is visible in the foreground.
Another view of the Barcelona coast from the fort.
One of the forts towers with a mast on top.
A big gun with graffiti on it.
Another big gun with graffiti on it. One noticable line reads "puerto rico".

@DonJefe@lemmy.world avatar

They are probably from the Spanish civil war. The fort was still used as a military facility during the war: …barcelona.cat/…/castle-during-second-republic-an…

I loved the funicular to get up there when i visited. What a great view. It was also neat seeing the evolution of the fortress

Longtermism poses a real threat to humanity

https://www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2023/08/longtermism-threat-humanity

"AI researchers such as Timnit Gebru affirm that longtermism is everywhere in Silicon Valley. The current race to create advanced AI by companies like OpenAI and DeepMind is driven in part by the longtermist ideology. Longtermists believe that if we create a “friendly” AI, it will solve all our problems and usher in a utopia, but if the AI is “misaligned”, it will destroy humanity...."

@technology

lloram239 ,

effective altruism specifically encourages wealthy people to keep their wealth to themselves, so that they can use their billionaire galaxy brains to more effectively direct that capital towards long-term good.

And how is that a bad thing? The alternative is to spend money on stuff that doesn’t work or even is actively harmful. The argument here is literally use less brain, do more pointless feelgood measures.

If, as they see it, Mars colonies tomorrow will help more people than healthcare or UBI or solar farms will today

Are we forgetting that Musk has an electric car company and used to have a solar company (since been absorbed into Tesla). He doesn’t just want to go to Mars, he does a lot of other stuff as well. Also why should billionaires be responsible for UBI and healthcare? If Musk would spend all his money on healthcare, you’d have healthcare for about three months before he is bankrupt. That kind of stuff is the governments job.

It’s an amazing ideology to have because if you can create a plausible future benefit you can do any real evil and feel like the good guy!

  • Stealed billions in wages from your workers? It’s alright, the funds will be used for you to gain influence and guide humanity to a better future!
  • Did you release a bioweapon in some global south country? It’s all right! Overpopulation was a danger 5 or 6 generations from now!
  • Destroyed democracy! It does not matter. Fascism today ensures democracy in the year 4000, trust me bro!
