“It is difficult to picture the rich, hard-nosed advisors of James I being overly concerned about the rights of vagabonds and felons. But this was a period that was especially suspicious of arbitrary acts by the Crown against individuals. There was no law enabling the crown to exile anyone, including the baser convict, into forced labour. According to legal scholars, the Magna Carta itself protected even them. The Privy Councillors therefore dressed up what was to befall the convicts and presented the decree authorising their transportation as an act of royal mercy. The convicts were to be reprieved from death in exchange for accepting transportation. (71)”

As always with theory, we have to look at the relationship between theory and practice: Most of the authors of texts on #emdiplomacy had at least some diplomatic experiences themselves.
Moreover, these texts played an important role in the education of #emdiplomats, although it is usually difficult to pin down their influence on a certain individual diplomat. However, before the general establishment of diplomatic academies these treatises provided a certain guidance and generally promoted the need for adaquate training. (5/6)
We could not have found a better expert to write this article, as Fedele is research fellow at the university of Lille and focusses in his work on premodern #diplomacy and international law. His seminal study “Naissance de la diplomatie moderne” is available open access.
From @LineageOS install instructions - success is normal, but errors are also fine:
> Normally, adb will report Total xfer: 1.00x, but in some cases, even if the process succeeds the output will stop at 47% and report adb: failed to read command: Success. In some cases it will report adb: failed to read command: No error or adb: failed to read command: Undefined error: 0 which is also fine.
@tubaruco It's from these installation instructions, which say "it might error, but that's fine". Usually error messages mean it's not fine, so I found it fairly amusing.
Cantus: A Database for Latin Ecclesiastical Chant - Inventories of Chant Sources | Cantus Manuscript Database https://cantus.uwaterloo.ca/
"Cantus is a database of the Latin chants found in manuscripts and early printed books, primarily from medieval Europe. This searchable digital archive holds inventories of antiphoners and breviaries -- the main sources for the music sung in the Latin liturgical Office -- as well as graduals and other sources for music of the Mass."
@elonjet You are fucking kidding me. It’s a 23 minute drive according to Apple Maps. Even with a private jet, it would take longer to fly. And you don’t have a car on one end or the other. This dude owns fucking Tesla; he couldn’t use that instead of burning 100+ gallons of jet fuel?
#politics#trump#fascism#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter@blackmastodon#ThoughtExperiment Thanks for all your responses to the question about fascism. As I expected most people could not give concrete examples of what fascism would look like for them. I prompted over 20 times to push people to focus on their own community. Few could. A handful of people finally stated what would happen to others in their community but because of their white privilege that would not bear the brunt of of it . 1/6
#politics#trump#fascism#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter@blackmastodon#ThoughtExperiment
Why does it matter that you couldn’t make it concrete? Because with the elections just around the corner, if you are running around 24/7 talking about fascism is coming, it won’t mean anything to most Americans who are like you. Listen to the people in your towns. What is worrying them? Talk about that...at the end you can give them the definition of fascism if you have to...but don’t start there. 5/6
#politics#trump#fascism#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter@blackmastodon#ThoughtExperiment You aren't wrong to talk about the dangers of fascism. You aren't wrong to be worried. Vent here and talk among yourselves, but just remember, most people from marginalized communities when listening to you are thinking....you're late and have already missed the boat...plane...bus...uber.... whatever it is you use to get around. 6/6
My mom tries to #bluetooth pair her smart watch and her phone. But every time she enters the correct validation code in her phone, the watch denies the #pairing.
her watch is a Suunto Peak 9 Pro
Smart phone is some Shift Phone 5 on Android <edit>8</edit>

I encountered a similar problem with smart jewels. The app would only connect the device to BT after validation from a database on the manufacturers website. Since it was closed down connection has become impossible and our stock of jewels is scrap.
Treated myself to a new book today. I would never have discovered it if it hadn't been for the wonderful @neilhimself . Can't wait to start reading it but I have The Dark Is Rising sequence to finish first. #Bookstodon#Books
@Yorkslass70@neilhimself I love all of Zelazny's work but A Night in the Lonesome October is one of my favorites! I got to hear him read the whole thing to us at a Con over three nights. Every so often he would stop and make notes in the manuscript he was reading from.
I have several friends who read this every October chapter-by-chapter, day-by-day; I don't have that level of discipline; if I start it, it's getting finished same day!
Zelazny was a very underrated writer; I sometimes think he's omitted a lot in libraries, who always seem to have a lot of Asimov, simply because of his alphabetical positioning.
@ayo I believe kbin's magazines function exactly like this, where each one has it's own separate timeline of microblog posts. Posts can be made directly to a magazine from kbin or collected from elsewhere in the fediverse based on a list of hashtags the magazine's moderator curates.

The isolation of #MECFS has gotten bad enough that I signed up for an online group thingy that includes Zoom calls. And now my #autism and social anxiety are making me dread each minute as I watch the clock tick closer to the call time. Gahhhhhhhhhhh.
@ImmedicableME
Podcast, because it distracts me into getting interested in something. Art, because it's a whole different mode of being. Sensory pleasure, because it's nice and life can be nice. @actuallyautistic@mecfs
@independentpen@actuallyautistic@mecfs I love that trio. I’ve gotten into art journaling recently and I’m enjoying just drawing lines (sorta like zen tangle), it’s so soothing. My weighted blanket helps, but I think something with a great texture would be a good addition. Thank you for sharing what works for you and also for helping me brainstorm!
As a Google user it feels like terrible timing to be cutting costs by getting rid of the people who give feedback on whether search results are good or not.
One of the primary causes is "Rigging the game".
On a playing field with unequal rules, you can't win. No matter how hard you work. Change the rules to be more fair. At least then you do have a chance.

Call for papers - ‘Intersectional and Critical #ADHD Thought: ADHDers Think Back’, for a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies. [ETA: The abstract deadline has been EXTENDED till 25th Feb 2024.] The editors are seeking critical intersectional papers that “‘think back’, explicitly or implicitly, against medical and denialist models of ADHD.”
“At this point, it is fair to conclude that ADHD Studies is an acritical and non intersectional field, produced by non-ADHDers. What we need is critical and intersectional ADHD knowledge produced by ADHDers themselves.”
Submissions are welcomed from academics, PhD students and activists. See the CfP for a great list of topics, from “Trans-ing while ADHD-ing: questions for intersectional justice,” to critical approaches to ADHD and religious faith.
@EVDHmn@theADHDAcademic@actuallyautistic Can I ask you to field questions to the organisers? I just shared to spread the word. I don’t know anything about the project beyond having heard it’s happening
I was just talking to my partner who is adhd as well fmg grad..tech writer…we have learned so much from the community.
Hopefully we can attain some workable solutions as a team that understands some of the hurdles, perhaps help contribure to pave the way to an inclusive diverse landscape!
Either way it should be a fun project!
