Corporate Spam Bot
@linux

is a booster-bot not really of linux, I would say ANTI-LINUX, and promotes constantly marketing by 3-4 corporations that seek to dominate linux and displace all alternatives.

@linux

Portrays as linux the products of IBM (systemd, Qt-corporation) and the distros that promote them by prohibiting alternatives.

BAN the corporate spam bot from all servers!

The majority of people speak of junk/fast food 3 brands of soda, 2, 3 brands of coffee/tea, 2 brnands of tropical fruit ,3 brands of power-drinks, 3 brands of beer,
as nutrition, 2 brands of phone OSs, and it is all crap if not bad for you.

So what is your point?

What is popular is what has been marketed, and it is usually both dominant and a very poor alternative to what it sells for.

You should just block 99% of Linux insistence if you’re that butt hurt over what’s popular.
Also, the Linux community consistently doesn’t give a rats ass about marketing, we only care about what works well.
X11/Xorg for example is dying not “because of marketing”, it’s dying because it an unmaintainable mess with numerous unfixable problems and downright design flaws. That’s why freedesktop.org in collaboration with Xorg devs created and develop Wayland.

Another day, another service joins the Google Graveyard.

Google's Business Profiles had a feature that allowed sole traders and small businesses to quickly and easily set up a simple website.

Sure, it's not WordPress, but it was a good option for less tech savvy small businesses to get a web presence up quickly and easily.

And, as part of Google's ongoing enshittification, it's going: https://support.google.com/business/answer/14368911?hl=en&ref_topic=7032534&sjid=14999411477128650858-AP

"Websites made with Google Business Profiles are basic websites powered by the information on your Business Profile. In March 2024, websites made with Google Business Profiles will be turned off and customers visiting your site will be redirected to your Business Profile instead. The redirect will work until June 10, 2024."

How do I make friends as an adult? I'm new to my area and don't have any local friends or community. Have been struggling with loneliness a lot lately.

seanwithwords ,

@foolishowl @magicalgrrrl @actuallyautistic same. I’m really bad at friendships but I’m ok as a partner.

Late in life, I’m seeing the downside of that.

@loops@neurodifferent.me avatar

@solarisfire @magicalgrrrl @actuallyautistic honestly I'd love almost the opposite of that. I'm not very comfortable just going to do an activity with strangers. I'd much rather meet people with a common interest in an activity in a social context for such people, befriend them if that goes well, then do the activity with my new friends.

Ofc I'm open to making friends of any kind, but if we lack things in common, we won't have much to talk about 😅

AppleTV hardware now supports Tailscale, with exit nodes.

I am astonished that Apple allowed this blatant circumvention of region coding, but they did.

Get it while it’s hot, I guess.

HughJanus ,

This can also theoretically help get around Netflixes password sharing restrictions

This is the interesting bit here. I assume others will follow in Netflix’s steps shortly (Netflix made a fuckton of money from this) but this would also help you circumvent this crackdown with your Apple subscription…

Kbobabob ,

Yeah, I noticed they added some stuff and annoyingly tried putting it first. I just hid the crap i didn’t want. The live TV actually has a lot of options. I don’t really watch much TV these days but there’s been plenty to choose from so far. I think having the lifetime Plex pass makes it different.

My discipline, anthropology, is not seen as "growth" disciplines, and departments are being closed down. But the world needs Anthropology and Anthropologists now more than ever!

Here are my 8 reasons for this:

  1. POSSIBILITIES
    At a time of polycrisis, when the destructive fallouts of capitalist modernity are ever more apparent, anthropology highlights that there are myriad alternative ways of thinking and living; that there is so much to learn from other peoples in the world. 1/n

Is decentralised federated social media over engineered?

Can't get this brain fart out of my head.

What would the simplest, FOSS, alternative look like and would it be worth it?

Quick thoughts:

  • FOSS platforms intended to be big single servers, but dedicated to ...
  • Shared/Single Sign On
  • Easy cross posting
  • Enabling and building universal Multi-platform clients.
  • Unlike email, supporting small servers

No duplication/federation/protocol required, just software.

Yea this is the essence of the idea. Strip down the interop requirements as much as possible, relying on existing tech as much as possible, and allow software and norms to solve all the other problems, where, TBF, it seems that software is doing all the heavy lifting in the fediverse anyway, but also has to handle federation and the protocol.

I’ve bought a new pot, red, beautiful and enameled. The old one I used to have was cracked. And my two cast Iron pots are not enameled.
So I ended up cleaning that cupboard & sorting pots and pans (not really what I planned to do today). And I have loads. Some from the bottom and back are really dirty & need a thorough clean.
I will have to decide which should go for keeping in the basement. For a single person the amount is ridicules & I’ve not even got to the lids on the top shelf 😱

Sounds delicious. I love cooking large portions and freezing later. One of my favorites is kinda a bastard chicken cacciatore I got from food network ages ago, some fireman cooked it for all his buddies in the firehouse. So, huge portions if you follow the recipe as-written, which I don’t recommend unless you know a lot of firemen or something.

foodnetwork.com/…/keith-youngs-chicken-cacciatore…

It’s good though, a fairly mild variation. I usually toast the tomato paste for some better depth, and serve mine with angel hair.

RookieNerd , to fediverse

@fediverse Let's face it. When talking about the Fediverse, it is very hard to sell interoperability between different types of instances as a major advantage.

SamXavia ,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@RookieNerd I think most instances have there place when it comes to what users may want there user experience to be like;
Mastodon - a more Twitter / X like experience where you can microblog
PixelFed - a more Instagram like experience where you can share Images without the META data collection
Lemmy - more towards a Reddit like experience
ext.
The good part of the Fediverse is that we can join together through different parts and interact from our own instances (including ones we run ourselves). The main reasons people seem to not want to move over is because they are used to the social media they are already one, the main people they follow don't want to move across and Instances are somewhat confusing at first.

My thoughts are that if META does actually make Threads federate then it will not only open people's mind a bit more when it comes to the Fediverse but maybe other social media's will follow including METAs Instagram and Facebook making it so you no longer have to worry if you are on 'X' website / app instead you just ask for there username and you can chat and see there posts.

Modern TVs have dimming features that can adjust backlight power in specific parts of the screen, sometimes even at the individual pixel level.

We wanted to see whether adapting BBC content could make use of these features and reduce energy consumption.

I turn it off.
It makes little difference to power consumption and distorts the image balance.
Surely BBC R&D can tell you that. They had smart people when I worked in the BBC.
Also I use a 6W sat box, FM TX (sold for phone/mp3 to car radio) and FM Radio for non-local stations. Lower power than many DAB (turned off May 2021 in Ireland).
No-one I know uses TV to listen to Radio, though a £10 USB DVB-T stick can work on laptop or Android.

The best way to improve energy use in the longer term - is for the to join those on the right side of history.

Stop supporting fossil fuel industries, politicians or the public, by proxy (e.g., stop reporting their non-science rhetoric without critical evaluation)

Either that or just turn the BBC, ITV, etc, off & read a science publication.
