Mildly notable social media moment for me watching a Dr Becky video on YT.

In listing her "socials" she's got , and (and of course ).

link below

Is this the new central axis of social media?

Which is funny cuz I've never really been to any of those. No accounts and only visited IG a few times because something else linked there for some information.

Also, I didn't really notice Threads was succeeding.

Yea for sure. I’m not enough of YouTuber to use an account and comment though.

Plus I get the feeling that the astrophysics community kinda bounced off of the fediverse. But definitely worth a try.

I post about !boinc a bunch on mastodon hopefully to get some excitement from astrophysics folks, there’s tons of cool boinc projects doing astrophysics research. Science runs on twitter, and many scientists are desperately searching for an alternative, imo it’s only a matter of time before they all end up on mastodon or nostr.

Death of the Middle Class Musician

Interesting reflection by two older musicians (Beato and Tim Pierce) about how the music industry used to have a "middle class" that's been pushed out now by an industry that focuses more and more on profits.

They don't really go into the details of how the changes happened, with big-corp being the elephant in the room ... but their observations, which include tech, paint a pretty clear picture.

I remember a piece Harlan Ellison wrote back in the 1970s. He was working on television shows, and said that if he could save $1,000.00 he could live for six months and just write the stuff he really wanted to do.

mrcompletely ,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@joyce there's a stealth category of Supposed Kids' Books That You Should Absolutely Read As An Adult and that's my number two all time book on that list, the first being The Thirteen Clocks by Thurber - I know @neilhimself is a fan as well - an absolutely masterful book on every level. Everyone should get to know the Golux and the Todal. Anyone who loves The Last Unicorn is likely to love this book too

mrcompletely ,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@KShortill @joyce I would certainly list the younger-audience works by @neilhimself to start with. He writes with respect for the minds of younger people, which is the key quality of a work like this. Calvin & Hobbes is a canonical text of this type, as are the first few Earthsea books by LeGuin. The Princess Bride novel is not, which surprises many who see the movie first. I've never written out an actual list so I'll have to think about it to recover a few more examples.

My theory is that the edges of trees are actually invisible to us, so they are touching (on both ends, obvs), but not in a way we can see. What they are not doing is fighting each other for the light. They are optimizing and cooperating. https://toot.lgbt/@book/111749320285900616

autistic teen and depression, what has worked for you to feel better?

samanthagroves ,
@samanthagroves@kolektiva.social avatar

@SylviaSolanas Well, truth is nothing did, but in retrospect I'm assuming that either accommodations or being taken out of school, removed from the neurosupremacist environment I grew up in altogether and live in one in which I would have been allowed to be myself (explore my special interests, be allowed to stim, unmask and not stigmatized for my meltdowns leading me to internalize them) may have helped.

Or at the very least perhaps I wouldn't have already been burnt out and an addict by the time I reached adulthood.

The lightest, this makes makes me think, what actually constitutes a gaming laptop, I have an old Intel 530 laptop, I can play Abe’s Oddysee on it, and probably fallout, which makes it a gaming laptop, why do gamers chase the latest hardware when for mere cents they can get a good experience, an experience which was a dream to many.

It’s just marketing terms and they carry zero weight (lol) or reasoning anymore. Best to ignore anything a company says and just look at the hardware and its use case. Companies will continue to lie to consumers and nothing will change that

According to Engadget’s coverage of the first model with the touchscreen case, the case mostly just lets you use functionality from the app that goes with the earbuds without actually going into the app. I don’t use the apps for my earbuds or headphones, so I can’t say how useful quicker access to their functionality would be.

My all time favourite is El ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha. (dat is trouwens mijn leestip aan jullie!)

Balakrishnan Rajagopal (https://www.ohchr.org/en/special-procedures/sr-housing/mr-balakrishnan-rajagopal):

"I do believe that 's actions amount to domicide, and may now very well constitute acts of genocide as well. The attacks by Israel have destroyed not just homes, but hospitals… historic streets, public buildings holding important records and archives… the main public library, all four of Gaza's universities, 's old city, the ancient port of Gaza, and many museums including the newly opened Museum of Palestinian Heritage. Thank you for the interest. I will start adding screenshots in the new year, very soon. I have taken several, but I still need to decide which ones to use and how I'm going to organize them.

user0 OP ,

@justin

I had added lots of screenshots, but the repo ballooned in size and took too long to clone. So I completely removed all screenshots and opted instead to link a screenshot that I posted to the Purism forums. I may add some more in the future, but I don't want to clutter the README.md with too many images. Sorry if that's a let-down.

I literally just opened Geometry Dash and was met with a terms of service pop up.
"…Why are they showing me this? Did my data get wiped or something?"
And then I see the Tower and realize that 2.2 just released.

Glad to finally see it here. Played through Dash (which is really easy for an insane imo, beat it much more quickly than usual), and it was mostly great! Only issue is that I REALLY don't like the swing copter. It's not fun to use at all.

Can't say I'm great at it either. Honestly, platformer game type is a weird concept for Geometry dash, but I don't mind it. The way different game modes are incorporated into it is really fun though
