10 years ago, teacher Twitter was extremely helpful to me. There's the #teaching hashtag here, which is nice, but are most people still on X? Or worse, Facebook?
Trying to build that side of my timeline back up. Boots appreciated along with recommendations of who to follow.
@brianb@NewScience101@edutooters Facebook has some amazing groups relevant to science, etc. they are more focused. Are you a #tcea member? We have free membership drive in October and that would give you access to TCEA Community which has over 80k educators via Mobilize.io community. Learn more at https://tcea.org
Since I am planning to delete my Twitter account soon, I am slowly deleting every post I made manually, so I can see what I posted (I also do not trust that they will delete the posts if I delete the account). A large portion of my replies are congratulating people on things like their newly published paper, graduating, getting a grant, etc. These kind of posts are what I miss about Twitter, and I hope more people come and post their successes on Mastodon. #AcademicChatter
@DrEvanGowan
What do you think is the best way to encourage more academics to switch?
I don't know the answer, nor do I think people should be actively persuaded. Maybe just creating an inviting alternative environment on Mastodon is enough, but the risk there is you never reach a network effect / gravitational pull. #academicchatter#mastodon#twitter @yetiinabox@academicchatter
Live tooting from conferences, celebrating publications, circulating calls, putting out the word on jobs...all the stuff we used to do over there! And also, the more difficult bits - calling out abusive profs happened in significant part on Twitter, as did the formation of alternative informal networks.
This week's #MythologyMonday theme is fire and there are two major Greek gods associated with fire: #Hestia, goddess of the hearth, and #Hephaistos, god of smiths.
They represent #fire in two different forms: the sacrificial flame of the hearth as the sacred centre of domestic life and the flame of Hephaistos, source of all arts, and fuel of the funeral pyre. But both could be invoked for the cooking of sacrificial meat or a good meal:
If it did go out, only sacred fire produced by friction, or by bronze burning mirrors drawing fire from the sun, might be used to rekindle it.
A ritual from #Lemnos, the cult centre of #Hephaistos, has all fires on Lemnos extinguished for nine days until new fire is brought from the island of #Delos:
"And the island of #Lemnos is purified every year for the deed once done to the men on Lemnos by their wives at #Aphrodite's instigation. The fire on Lemnos is extinguished for nine days. A sacred ship from #Delos, however, carries the fire, and if it arrives before the offerings for the dead, it puts in nowhere on Lemnos, but rides at anchor off the headlands out at sea until sailing into the harbor is permitted by divine law."

Despite the structural mess of the post, the game it’s showing (a mix of rimworld and a political simulator?) looks like it could be pretty interesting.
The #RomanceForMaui auction is live, until 3pm EDT on Monday August 21; the original goal was a humble $5K, but the current total is siting just shy of $62K, with 281 items on offer.
"In the waning days of the Cold War, Rainer Sonntag helped fuel a neo-Nazi movement that still plagues Germany today. He was also a Communist spy—and worked for Vladimir Putin."
Nope we have a big Nazi problem and most of us learn that the only right way to go about it is to be very self critical with our history and to call those racist dipshits out whenever we can

That’s a hell of a statement. I wish I could show you how wrong you are. Just look at the origin of our past terrorist attacks and you will see a trend and a priority list for us.
If you look close enough to all the bullshit destabilising western countries, there’s always Russian influence at the end of the string.
Even Trump election was made with Russian influence, which caused a huge division in the west. That’s the type of strategy they used in countries like Ukraine (worked until they launched a full invasion).
At least. With the strike(s) going on it could be even longer. Though I presume that the studios will try to pump out new content as quickly as possible once productions are possible again.
The square brackets around the hashtags followed by regular brackets and URLs should be interpreted by the client as URLs with link text whatever is in the square brackets - markdown is how it is formatted to do this.
Strangely, viewing the post here on blahaj.zone, the tree and moss links do display like that, but lichen does not - I suspect because the length of the title (including full URL links) exceeds the allowed title length so it stops parsing the text.
Anyone with more #BritishColumbia#GovernmentofCanada#legalities on this private medical clinic in #VictoriaBC that I was alerted about today?
Alerted by a friend who was told by her family physician that if she wanted to remain a patient that she needs to pay $1500 first.
That sounds illegal & in violation of federal health act.
Can anyone in BC please tell me more about legalities of this??
@chris I thought that was kinda illegal, when she started telling me about her/her husband's horrific & what they felt as blackmail billing.
They weren't expecting to be hit like that. She's been going to walk-ins since being told to pay $1500 to remain a patient. I'm trying to help her get a new family doc ATM. Both her & her husband are elderly & need a family doctor who will help them manage their health.
