@bookstodon Another really good graphic nonfiction book I've read recently, and recommend, is WE HEREBY REFUSE, regarding the Japanese-Americans forced into internment camps in WWII.

The story addresses a common victim-blaming response to the plight of others: "Why didn't they fight back?" It's almost always the wrong question, even though indeed, they did fight back. Victim-blaming is a pernicious permission structure, allowing us not to care about terrible events that happen to other people.

This is a story rarely heard. It needs to be heard, especially as some leaders are openly advocating for detention camps for those who look like they "might be here illegally."

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Most Japanese Americans & Asians (in US & outside of it) called them concentration camps - not internment camps. Colonial, racist governments called them internment camps in US & Canada but that's a dishonest word for them. Internment camps are for military personnel. Japanese & Asians(anyone who looked Japanese) were rounded up & imprisoned in colonial concentration camps. Many died in them.

Author copies arrived of this bulky anthology of African ghost stories. Now I can say that my story was published in the same book as the legend, Amos Tutuola!

@thepoliticalcat @TheConversationUS @histodons That's a pity. Ignorance can lead to unintentional abusive actions. I'm glad that ppl intervened.

I recommend purchasing used books from the library, especially if they sell donated books, and not just library discards. I picked up all of these for a cool five bucks.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I often buy used books from local libraries.

@cpm @kimlockhartga @bookstodon I also run my little free community library in front of my home. I put new books donated & gently used books I'm finished reading in there. I also put in CDs & DVDs in it. Lots of ppl visit it & take/donate books/multimedia.

I'm starting a arts/crafts/non-perishable food free community sharing box too. I have to repaint an old donated newspaper box for that one 😊

@cpm @kimlockhartga @bookstodon There's a whole bunch of people owned/run little free libraries in every community here 😊 Mine has dinosaurs, Baby Yoda & gargoyle guardians atop & decorated with environmental stickers.

@kimlockhartga @cpm @bookstodon Thanks! Kids/adults who visit love it & also like that I planted several foods in front gardens that I encourage visitors to pick & take home to eat.

I am adding some more decorations to my LFL this Fall & some seasonal stuff near Halloween & at Winter Solstice time.

Anyone with more on this private medical clinic in that I was alerted about today?
Alerted by a friend who was told by her family physician that if she wanted to remain a patient that she needs to pay $1500 first.
That sounds illegal & in violation of federal health act.

Can anyone in BC please tell me more about legalities of this??

Image from Perpetual Healthcare in Victoria. Pop-up window says they are accepting private pay patients & to click to fill out intake form.

@chris I thought that was kinda illegal, when she started telling me about her/her husband's horrific & what they felt as blackmail billing.

They weren't expecting to be hit like that. She's been going to walk-ins since being told to pay $1500 to remain a patient. I'm trying to help her get a new family doc ATM. Both her & her husband are elderly & need a family doctor who will help them manage their health.
