Also, scroll up to see Alan, the dude behind Valve’s Lighthouse tracking tech for VR. And now I just realised it’s >20 years since I first browsed his awesome hobby website Alan’s Lab.

I assumed this was leftover April fool stuff. Does he really look that good all the sudden? I swear he was just photographed for another story within the last couple months that he looked the same in.

Damn damn, good for him if real.

I have played many games similar to this one, and I hate to admit this, but I think I’m too stupid for CK3. I just don’t know enough about English royalty/gentry shit to keep up.

ICastFist ,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

I always assumed from videos I’ve watched that the point of the game is to either manage shit around Europe/Asia or fuck around as a noble of Bumfucknowhere, denouncing the pope, spying on your spouse, sending your entire court to jail, all for shits and giggles.

NoIWontPickAName ,

I want a battle sim version of ck3.

Like Digital Risk but with terrain and type advantages right down to being able to control different active battlefields as the general or maybe even squad formation level if you wanted.

The background can be all the complicated incest avoidance/embracing.

Basically the opposite of ck3.

I still want the option to make allies or trade treaties, just maybe let me hand it off to the cpu if I want

bob_lemon ,

You just described the Total War series

ICastFist ,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Yep, @NoIWontPickAName could look into Medieval 2 Total War for the combat where terrain, morale and troop fatigue matters, though it’s sorely lacking in the incest department and internal political intrigue.

NoIWontPickAName ,

Alas, incest simulator three will just have to wait

DragonTypeWyvern ,

The point is create a eugenics empire of giant geniuses who come out of the womb ready to tear a grown man’s head off his shoulders.

And that other stuff.

psmgx ,

ThunderclapSasquatch ,

On my last CK3 run I seduced the Pope, went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, picked a twink in Syria, then made him a lord in Northern Italy upon our return, then my character lost his fucking mind and banged the man’s wife

some_guy , in More games should do this

I’m loving CK3 right now.

Godric ,

Where are you posted? In my current run, I started as the count of Gotland, and then invaded Frisia. A few generations later, and all of the British Isles are viking, as is Scandinavia, Germany and France.

Last I played, my dynasty had 10 Kingdoms under its belt, ruled by various cousins and uncles of the main branch.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

The new Legend mechanic is pretty hilarious with the Asatru horde. I’d conquered all of Catholicism by my second ruler because you can spam out the generic Defender of the Holy Site legend, spread it fast as fuck because of course they gave the Norse more bonuses, and basically buy a Kingdom Holy War CB every couple of years while also mass converting territory.

Then the second ruler died and I’m still on Confederate Partition so now there are five Norse Empires in control of Western Europe. I’d considered going full Blood Empire and trying to eradicate all dynasties but mine but I’m not sure that’s even possible anymore.

some_guy ,

I’ve been playing Norse for a while. Just switched back to the Ireland campaign. I’m pretty new to the game and still learning how to effectively retain control after succession.

I started on xbox, which strips out a lot of granularity and only picked up the full version on a kbd/mouse device about a month ago. Reading game tips made me aware of mechanics that xbox lacked. I haven’t lasted more than several generations because I still learn from mistakes and start over. I’m getting there. Great game.

Godric ,

Love the game, been playing Ck2 and 3 for about a decade now.

A big part is making sure your lands are not split up too much each generation. Usually this means conquering or revoking from a vassal a new duchy per son, so the core remains intact on sucession. Like real life, Tyranny is just a number if you have the army to back it up.

Another big part is military strength. Betroth your newborns to people with big armies. Keep in mind the product of said unions will inherit claims to your land. Also, Knights and Men at Arms are wayyyy stronger than levies. If you’re playing Norse, they cost prestige, not gold, so you can maintain as many as your monthly prestige income allows, and battle, feast, and raid to boost your prestige over time to afford more.

Raiding is a HUGE boon for the Norse. Best places are counties in Ireland early, and then Brittany, Spain, and Cornwall as you become more powerful. Just be sure you scout the place out and make sure the ruler doesn’t have better troops than you, or you’ll go home with nothing!

some_guy ,

Thanks! I saved this comment to review later when I’m more awake.

Knowing CK3 it is too dangerous that it would say “Marrying your sister”. So gonna stay in invisible mode

You start getting healthier and losing weight just by eating real food instead of American poison, living in NZ or any other country that cares for its citizens will do that for you

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

You think America doesn’t have any fruits and vegetables? And NZ doesn’t have any unhealthy food? Lol

spacedout ,
@spacedout@lemmy.ml avatar

The ease of access and availability of unprocessed foods, or food products without high amounts of corn syrup, sugars and other additives, is much higher in most of the world outside of the US. I can never stay in the US for more than a couple of weeks without gaining weight. Then again, it doesn’t help that US food is fantastically tasty, either ♥️

GBU_28 ,

There have been account after account of people leaving the States for one reason or another (Military relocation, job placement, etc), monitor their diet and actually find that while they are technically eating more, they are losing weight.

America’s got problems.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Bullshit. The laws of thermodynamics will not be denied.

Now, if you told me the American food industry was just lying about calorie content in the first place…

Obi ,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

Probably more a case that people don’t look at calories and make the comparison based on volume eaten, feelings etc.

Fruits and vegetables sprayed and watered with preservatives and pesticides at every step of its cycle that end up in our bodies without much long term study before approving it.

NZ has McDonald’s and other similar trash but like most nations other than the us some restrictions and requirements are in-place and enforced to prevent corporations poisoning us for slightly improved profits

Nachorella ,

America might take the crown but I can assure you AU and NZ have plenty of trash to eat.

Gotta be Ozempic.

NoneYa ,

Nothing wrong with it though

Hopefully. But it feels like we do this very often. We get a drug or something else that does this or that and is touted as being the best at this and then a few years later we announce that it was a horrible decision and has harsh consequences. Cigarettes, plastic, trans fats, so many dietary trends…

I’d love to try it but I’m skeptical just for this reason. Hoping not to hear in a decade that all these people developed the same type of cancer or some other horrible ailment.

SeabassDan ,

Man, remember Fen-Phen?

Tyfud , (edited )

I 'm with you, truely.

But what you’re describing is just how science works in a world where we’re trying to make discoveries quickly due to our lifespans only being around 75 years compared to the billions or millions or thousands of years for everything else existing.

As long as we continue making discoveries along the way, this is progress. It sucks that we keep getting things partially wrong sometimes, like with asbestos, but we’ll eventually get it right as long as we keep following the process.

blind3rdeye ,

The examples given are not problems with science and time-scales. They are examples of the corrupting influence of money. Companies push their product as being fantastic, and deliberately cripple any science that would challenge their profits. Cigarettes are probably the most famous example of this.

Tyfud ,

That is a fair point for sure. No disagreement from me.
