I get the joke, but I honestly don’t think Jellico is a jerk. He’s a military man. He wants his ship run in a military manner. Captains like Picard, Kirk, Janeway, etc. are not especially interested in a ship being run that way despite being in the military. I am guessing they are more the exception than the rule. Maybe that explains their success, but Jellico was also a successful captain. He just had a different way of running a ship, a more traditional way.
See also: Shaw on Picard. I know he was portrayed as an asshole (until the end), but he was clearly a very good captain.
Welcome, everyone! The way I described what I personally hope for this community is a place to have fun discussions about Star Trek that aren’t stuffy like DaystromInstitute on Reddit but also not pure silliness like Ten Forward (although I’m probably going to be the first one to end up being silly anyway, I can’t help myself). But there is definitely a place on Lemmy for people to talk Trek in a friendly way about subjects us fans care about.
My one personal rule is this- Star Trek canon doesn’t really exist and we shouldn’t pretend it does. It changes all the time. Even within a series.
That’s not a rule I’m going to enforce as a mod or anything, it’s just something I will not hesitate to point out when I see it.
And you don’t have to take my word for it. Ex Astris Scientia has a massive inconsistencies list. They make a valiant attempt to explain away as many as they can, but they admit failure all the time too.
As the viewer, it’s hard not to dislike a new face in the captain’s chair. We’re so used to Picard’s strengths and style that anyone else’s flaws seem immediately obvious. Jellico is probably a fine captain without the unavoidable comparison, but the crew (as a stand-in for the audience) were highly critical and slow to trust him. I’m not sure who was more in the wrong.
I’ve heard it mentioned many times: Riker would be a captain on any other ship, but since he’s on “The Enterprise”, he’s only the first officer.
So imagine you are Riker, as #1 on the flagship of the fleet. Picard becomes “indisposed” for whatever reason. You are as good as any captain, but not on the Enterprise. Starfleet decides to assign another temporary captain, instead of using Riker, who already knows the ship/crew/etc.
I know I’d be pissed, no matter who the temporary captain was. I’d feel slighted.
Now image you are Jellico. An accomplished captain (who very well could have been the normal captain on the Enterprise), who may or may not be assigned to a ship. Picard becomes “indisposed” for whatever reason. Starfleet decides to assign you as temporary captain of the flaship of the fleet. It’s truly an honor to be chosen to that position. You don’t know the ship, or the crew, very well, so are an outsider. An upstart #1 (who is NOT a captain) feels he should be in command. I’d feel unappreciated/slighted as well.
Looking from either position, I can totally understand Riker and Jellico not liking each other, to say nothing of different command styles. Both have a good claim to acting captain, and neither are particularly wrong.
As another crew member on the Enterprise, who would you like to see as temporary captain?
I was lucky enough to meet him a few times. Always absurdly kind and thoughtful. The second time I met him was by chance. He recognized me and asked if I was still keeping up with the show. Not to mention talented. I really loved the character of Aurellio. I was hoping we’d get to see him more. Hopefully he has some scenes in Season 5.
Gone but certainly not forgotten by this fan anytime soon.
Two things. The first is something that I posted a week or so ago to my Mastodon.
So I just had a realization.
My entire life I’ve known what’s going to happen in Star Trek. I started with TNG but by the time I was actually invested it was off the air and Enterprise was limping off screen itself.
Lower Decks is amazing and I love the characters. If one of them dies I’ll be upset and if the Cerritos is destroyed then I’ll be upset but its Starfleet. It’ll carry on.
Strange New Worlds is amazing and I love the characters. Most of them we know the trajectory of but some we don’t. If one of them dies then I’ll be upset but its Starfleet. It’ll carry on and with TOS specifically.
Discovery is amazing and I love the characters but it was a prequel. As with SNW, we know what’s going to happen so the threat didn’t feel as severe to me. It was the same as Lower Decks and SNW. If someone died I’d be upset but it was Starfleet. I’d carry on. I was upset at Culber but carried on. Upset with Ariam but carried on. Even when they went to the future things didn’t change much for me. Sure I didn’t know what was going to happen anymore but it didn’t seem to the click.
But this fucking [trailer] and the realization that this is the final season? I am actually scared and really uncomfortable now and I don’t quite know how to process this. Like I started to have a minor panic attack. I don’t think it was until this moment I realized the show is ending and I have no idea how it will…
The second is something I have been realizing about myself a lot lately and I’m not sure what it says about me. But I’m more concerned for the ship than I am for the crew. I don’t really know why. Like don’t get me wrong, I’ll be upset if someone dies, as I said in that toot, but I am going to be devastated if the ship is destroyed. I don’t know why. Every other hero ship has been either destroyed or battered and it stung but this would kill me. I keep staring at my Discovery model on my desk (I really need to eventually get that Refit model) and panicking. She’s my ship. Not my first. Won’t be my last. But she’s my ship.
My question is where, there is a community center of sorts but it’s a bit off the beaten path. There wasn’t a park or similar community space the last time I was there (admittedly that was 20 years ago). They could put it at the airport or in front of the hotel or maybe down by the docks but that’s about it.
If it’s anything like the Janeway statue near to me in Bloomington, Indiana (still haven’t made my pilgrimage despite going to Bloomington to visit my mother all the time), it will be on an urban trail.

According to The Register, it’s in Ruth Pond Park? I looked it up in Google Maps, and it looks like it’s nicely developed enough that a statue somewhere out there wouldn’t look too weird.
Here’s the weird part. Riker only ever says that he’s from Alaska in the show. He doesn’t specify Valdez. So where does Valdez come from?
Both the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 223) and StarTrek.com identified Valdez, Alaska as Riker’s place of birth. [1]
I mean sure, why not Valdez? Riverside, Iowa decided Kirk was born there because he said he was from Iowa and no one ever claimed it before them, so I guess they got there first. They have a statue and a marker.
Someday, I’ll have to visit the Janeway statue in Bloomington, IN (Voyager did establish her as being from Bloomington because Jeri Taylor went to IU), the Kirk statue in Iowa, the soon-to-be Riker statue in Valdez and maybe finish at Vulcan, Alberta. A Star Trek road trip!
