NecroSocial , in Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Lower Decks | 4x05 “Empathalogical Fallacies"

I feel like this, and the latest three, episodes have been kinda fillery. I’ve ended each by thinking, “Well, that was an episode.” It wasn’t bad but it didn’t push the envelope comedy-wise or plot-wise. It was some breezy fluff, good enough to pass the time to but I find myself looking for higher caliber laughs or deeper plot elements than this episode delivered.

NocturnalEngineer , in Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Lower Decks | 4x05 “Empathalogical Fallacies"

I can never get enough Lower Decks. This episode was unhinged, in the best possible ways.

Leave it to lower desks to reveal more Orion history than any other show.

I had to add this after I found out it was real.

Camera with AI that can recognize items (like Google glass or Siri identifying plant species or translating text).

Health tools like heart rate monitor, EKG. Portable ultrasound

Cool_Name OP ,

Oh yes, AI image recognition absolutely gives me that tricorder vibe. I have a friend at my community garden with some apps like that and it is so much like an away mission when she quickly makes an ID and tells us what to do with that information.

scan “This is honey suckle it needs to be removed.”

scan “This is an indigenous cone flower, it will attract pollinators”

nickwitha_k , in What would be your ideal kit of tools for a real world tricorder?

Hrm… If going for things that could magically be in it, I think the following:

  • Multi-meter
  • Oscilloscope / Logic Analyzer / Signal Generator
  • Basic microscope
  • UV/Vis/IR spectrophotometer/spectrometer (possibly part of an imaging system)
  • Geiger counter / dosimeter
  • Gas Chromatograph (maybe use some kind of forcefield instead of physical column)/ Mass Spectrometer
  • EMR transceiver
  • Onboard reprogrammable logic circuitry (allows for arbitrary signal routing and data transformations)

Great I forgot this was out today. Looking forward to the new season. I’ve just been catching up on latest season of Strange New Worlds and literally just got to the cross over episode the other day so the timing is perfect.

I really loved how they highlighted the differences between the Ceritos and Enterprise crews in that crossover, might be weird seeing them back animated again though now.

I’m looking forward to watching this evening!

Hope you sat down with a nice glass of bones to drink and enjoyed them.

Amputret , in 'Star Trek' Day 2023 arrives this week to celebrate 'The Original Series' 1966 launch
@Amputret@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It still annoys me that they don’t use April 5th, the actual canonical First Contact Day, which is the Federation’s biggest holiday as Star Trek Day. 😒

Just_Pizza_Crust , in Star Trek is getting five new ‘very Short Treks’

Can we please just have normal short treks back but take it seriously? Some of those were fairly good, and were part of the plan for Disco and Pic.

Hell, there’s even an important character from short treks that shows up in Disco, without any explained connection during the Disco episode. It’s literally just, “hey I’m here and I’m friends with ___ character”. If short treks was taken seriously, people might have actually watched it and been a useful tool in developing the smaller and intimate moments in New Trek.

Birth of the Federation, is an option if you don’t want to support the Kelvin universe.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It sucks that you have to go back to 1999 to get a TNG-era 4X game and there’s no TOS one as far as I know. You’d think with the success of SNW they would at least have an updated TOS era 4X game.
