Evil_Shrubbery , in It's not DNS

Literally this, literally today.

subtext ,

Same here, quite literally this morning, it was fucking DNS

Evil_Shrubbery ,

Those little bastards, so sneaky. I’ve checked if d(uck)dns is working before my local DNS.

cm0002 , in We are not same

I don’t think that will have the impact people think it will, maybe at first, but eventually it’ll just start treating “wrong” code as a negative and reference it as a “how NOT to do things” lmao

Nighed ,
@Nighed@sffa.community avatar

It needs to understand that that code is bad to be able to do that though

cm0002 ,

For sure, but just like that whole “poison our pictures” from artists thing, the people building these models (be it a company or researchers or even hobbyists) are going to start modifying the training process so that the AI model can recognize bad code. And that’s assuming it doesn’t already, I think without that capability from the getgo the current models would be a lot worse at what they generate than they are as is lmao

FaceDeer ,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

That's just a matter of properly tagging the training data, which AI trainers need to do regardless.

Rindel , in Bartender Qualifications

I might be missing the joke, but Bartender is actually a real program for managing barcode readers!

____ , (edited )

Are they based out of the PNW? Now that I think about it, I may actually have interviewed with them at one point.

ETA: Yeah, pretty sure it was them, they’re PT and have a 425 DID for sales, and the company name is wholly unrelated to the product. Had forgotten about them entirely, and would have had the same reaction as OP to getting that email now.

And it probably is the sw product the email was referencing, since Bartender is capitalized.

Natanael ,

Sprokes , in Every Family Dinner Now

Didn’t ChatGPT become very bad recently? It used to give really working code but now it gets things wrong and doesn’t follow context. It gives code but when you ask it to improve by give more context, it ignores the previous answer and give wrong code.

It even sometimes answers by saying it does not have the answer for questions that it answered few months ago.

The latest update from openai calls this “laziness” and discusses a fix coming

PopShark ,

Whoa really? AI “laziness” is actually a really interesting concept imo

Evotech ,

Last time I asked a niche api question it showed me how to formulate the question so I could post it on this GitHub issues…

Edit

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/cb6cad7c-f0bf-47f5-b79a-bfa8dcf0ecfa.png

Clent ,

How is that a niche api question? That’s a public api that is scraped up.

It’s also a terrible way to ask the question. It’s how a clueless newb asks questions. Anyone hoping to help needs to at least know: What are you attempting to use the end point for and What results are you receiving vs expecting?

Black616Angel ,

Also also it told him to include the API key and used v3 in the URL.

LemmyRefugee ,

It is a perfect example of why you still need good programmers, that know what/how to ask.

RedstoneValley ,

That looks like advice on how NOT to ask for technical support on a public forum.

  1. Be generic and vague. Omit as many details as possible, this will only distract from the problem at hand.
  2. remember to include your private API key to share it with the world.
explodicle ,

I keep telling the stupid thing to stop wasting time and space apologizing, and it won’t.

doctorcrimson , (edited ) in Why pay for an OpenAI subscription?

IMO people are idiot for using an OpenAI subscription regardless of workarounds.

EDIT: +3 to -2 in roughly 3 minutes. Sudden downvotes instantaneously appearing. Hey, I’ve got a question, why does every defence of OpenAI sound like a fucking advertisement? “I realize it’s not for everyone, but my work at home is so much easier with this: It Slices, It Dices, and It even Peels all in one. Personally, with all the time it saves me, I can never go back to working without it.”

EDIT 2: Mods are deleting some of my responses for “ad hominem” but I think it was pretty fair to say those users were woefully unskilled and that it negatively impacts their future and everyone around them if they rely on the chatbot to do half passable work. If anything, I think them telling me about their inferior skills was the only insult there, and it was their own comment not mine.

thetreesaysbark ,

Why?

doctorcrimson ,

It’s a gimmicky mimic machine that produces actual nonsense which appears at a glance passable for human generated text. Why? I should be the one asking, fucking why?

fidodo ,

I use it for debugging all the time and while it making mistakes is not uncommon it’s still way better than trying to manually search through spotty documentation.

It’s also really great at doing basic automation tasks. Sometimes I’d write up throw away scripts to process some data, but with its code interpreter it can write those for me and for simple tasks I don’t even need to check what it wrote since it’s obvious when it did it correctly.

doctorcrimson ,

I’m sorry for your company and your peers that you’re so incompetent, and I’m sorry for your future self that gets replaced easily.

fidodo ,

I feel sorry for anyone who has to put up with your sorry ass attitude

captsneeze ,

I bet people love working with you…

thetreesaysbark ,

Jeez dude calm down. I was interested in your opinion, not this angry sprawl of bullshit.

It’s a pretty useful tool for certain subjects. Nobody should take it as an ‘it’ll do the work for me’, but for a lot of subject matter it works better and more consistently than a search engine.

And yeah, it is a mimic machine. And if you want something that mimics a huge amount of information that is on the internet without you having to search through tonnes of pages, this is really really useful.

doctorcrimson ,

Be real, I called a vague description that matches you an idiot and you are here to argue defensively.

thetreesaysbark ,

Not really. Was just looking for a calm answer on why you don’t like the thing. It’s a tool, I’m on board that you’re allowed not to like it. There may be valid reasons I shouldn’t use it. You seem to have mentioned only things that are useful about it, for me.

Sure I can be an idiot, who cares? The idiot with the bow and arrow is the one eating that night.

doctorcrimson ,

Imagine defensively denying your own defensive attitude.

thetreesaysbark ,

Lol alright have a nice day.

doctorcrimson ,

thats better

Wolf_359 ,

Perhaps you just don’t have a use for it?

It doesn’t do the thinking for me but man it’s a time saver for busy work.

It turns a lot of my work into “editing” rather than writing and then editing.

It’s very good for teachers to differentiate materials for students with a variety of reading levels.

doctorcrimson ,

Wow, that’s honestly pathetic that you trust it that much. It’s the equivalent to hiring a guy on craigslist to do your work for you, except instead of actually doing the work he is 50% likely to generate entire false documentation and sources. But hey, at least it’s very fast, so you could be wrong faster than you normally are.

Adanisi ,
@Adanisi@lemmy.zip avatar

Clearly the people downvoting you don’t understand that it’s a glorified bullshit generator haha.

Wolf_359 ,

I don’t have to trust it though? I just told you I revise and edit.

It doesn’t do my job for me, I still have to understand how to do the work properly. But I can use it to save time and then revise, check for errors, etc.

You’re basically arguing that spell check is useless because it’s wrong sometimes. It’s just a tool.

Meowoem ,

Why do people praising a thing you’re saying is useless sound like someone listing it’s good points in an advert? Gee tough question, could it be that they’re essentially the same thing and the latter is explicitly designed to look like the former?

Of course if you’re going to dismiss something entirely then people who benefit from using it are going to give their opinion, that’s what this is - a place to give opinions and talk about stuff.

How else would anyone answer your question? You suggest that it has no use, people who use it regularly are of course going to point out the uses it has. And yes many aren’t going to bother they’re going to use the button that essentially says ‘this is balderdash I don’t agree’

I have found many things ai is brilliant at, as a coding assistant it really is a game changer and within five years you’ll be used to talking to your PC like they do in Star Trek and having it do all sorts of reality useful things that there are no options for in software made like we do now.

doctorcrimson ,

They attempted to answer questions I didn’t ask, I expect them to screw off and enjoy their blissful ignorance, otherwise I wouldn’t have outright insulted them in the first place: I am not here to converse about all of the good points of an unethical and honestly inadequate product, I don’t give a fuck how they’re using it.

No real person sits down at their computer and thinks “I’m going spend today convincing people that Farberware is a high quality product.” Farberware is chinesium shit just like any other machine fabricated knife from Walmart. Just like ChatGPT fanboys claiming it automagically accomplishes your work tasks, it’s disingenuous to its core.

Meowoem ,

Well I use it most days and it’s sped up my coding and documentation writing considerably.

You’re either too dumb to be able to use it or you’ve not used it because of some weird fear of new things, either way you’re not coming from a place where your opinion has any value on this topic.

doctorcrimson ,

Bros, look, it’s the same advertisement defense I made fun of before. Lmao.

Meowoem ,

We know, you want to make a ridiculous statement and for everyone pointing out you’re objectively wrong to be ignored.

It’s the level of thinking of a six year old.

doctorcrimson ,

Do you hear that sound?

I hear the raw unfiltered sounds of defeat from the comment above. No longer trying an argument they resort to insulting my person.

Meowoem ,

You’re literally arguing ‘this has no uses and anyone who says otherwise is a meany’ what is anyone supposed to do but laugh at you?

I wish! The best Linux git gui I have found is SmartGit. I like it, but it’s just a little goofy and not free. Fork is better for its ability to very easily stage and/or stash a subset of the current changeset.

Anyone got any suggestions? I tried git-cola and gitkraken. The former I found obtuse and limited, and the latter is not free in addition to somehow making git harder with a pretty gui.

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

Gitkraken is free as long as the repository is public, which seems like an alright compromise to me. The only problem I had with it was that it was electron. What did it make harder for you?

    floofloof , (edited )

The best ones I have found for Linux are SmartGit and Sublime Merge, but neither are free in any sense. Sublime Merge is slightly cheaper. SmartGit offers a free “hobby license” but it limits which kinds of repos you can work with.

Gitkraken looks like it might be good but I haven’t used it.

Is running Linux off a USB drive possible? It isn’t ideal, but you can still have persistence if needed? There is also WSL, if you don’t need a GUI.

    You have rust.
