That and plain old garden variety racism.

FuglyDuck , (edited ) in Southwest Airlines appeals order requiring its lawyers to take 'religious liberty training'
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

So the employee was odious, refusing to participate in a parade with her union, and went on social media to harass others in doing the same- because the parade/protest was sponsored by planned parent hood against trump (edit, sorry for the typo)

She got fired for the harassment and is claiming religious discrimination.

So scummed up trump appointee of a judge ordered the lawyers to take “religious liberty training” training from the same people that are going after mefipristone.

  1. am I the only one wondering if this isn’t a money laundering scheme? Judge takes bribes, sends people for bullshit training, these people pay for it. Rinse, repeat.
  2. do they not see the irony of going on about religious liberty while actively imposing their religion on others?
buckykat ,

It’ll be the ones you don’t hear about, for example my grandparents who are some of the kindest, most compassionate people you’d meet. They hosted refugees, consistently voted progressive, and changed church when their previous one started being more anti-LGBT. Christians have ignored the teachings of Jesus from the start. Just one example: You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24. I think Jesus was a communist who would probably also be crucified today by the people who proclaim to be Christians.

RavenFellBlade ,

Paul derailed the Church right out of the gate. Here’s a guy who has had an absurd amount of control over the fate of Christianity who never met Christ, and who advocates principles that directly contradict Christ’s own teachings while being very similar to the teaching of the Jewish temple Paul previously held power in as a Pharisee. Paul took Christ’s teachings and merged them into a contemptible, incoherent hybrid of Christ’s message and the Jewish law-focused faith, brought full circle back into a religious bureaucracy by the Roman Catholics.

It was 50k doubling each day. So 50k + 100k + 200k for 3 days, if they had let it keep going it would of hurt a lot. This type of fine works.

At 10 days would be 51 million, after 20 would be 52 billion dollars. So, they have a compelling reason to comply with haste.

mo_ztt , in Indictment shows White House lawyers struggling for control as Trump fought to overturn election
@mo_ztt@lemmy.world avatar

Three days before Jan. 6, Philbin told Jeffrey Clark, a Justice Department lawyer, that if Trump remained in office despite no evidence of fraud there would be “riots in every major city in the United States.”

Pat Philbin is more optimistic about Americans than I am. Republicans have been stealing elections time to time since the year 2000, and I haven’t seen a single riot about it.

RGB3x3 ,

That’s because they keep us arguing with the Republicans about trans people and immigrants.

If the democrats could get their heads straight about who and what the actual problem in our country is (ultimately the lack of accountability in Washington and the efforts by Republicans across the country to disenfranchise millions of voters), we could then demand some real change.

Instead, we’re fighting over student loan scraps and the environment. That all comes after we fix our voting systems so that we can actually have representation to get things done.

mo_ztt ,
@mo_ztt@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed.

If the democrats could get their heads straight about who and what the actual problem in our country is

There’s the rub… one of the core actual problems in our country is that if you’re in government, you can make a pile of money by selling out the working folks to the people who have piles of money to give you. The Democrats are great, comparatively speaking (i.e. standing next to the Republicans), but even so there are a lot of Democrats who don’t want to solve that problem.

crusa187 ,

To put it bluntly - there are a lot of democrats taking a lot of corporate bribe money to ensure that “nothing would fundamentally change.”

    I don’t agree with this rehabilitation bullshit, it’s only for rich and small countries with already high living standards. Any other country, and it will be just like you said, a bunch of people working their assess off just for a slight chance at a psycho not turning into a disgusting asshole.

    CoolSouthpaw ,

    Yeah. I would also say that even in rich and small countries, it’s hard. Some people are just born psychos - far ends of the bell curve, etc etc.

    Baconheatedradiator ,

    Baconheatedradiator ,

    Yes rehabilitation costs money and time, but do you realise that the death penalty often uses more money and resources than keeping somebody alive and in prison for the remainder of their life?

    It baffles me when people like you jump to these extreme conclusions. Kids a fucked up little shit, but here you are calling for his death. That in itself is extremely fucked up.

    Landrin201 ,
    @Landrin201@lemmy.ml avatar

    No see he wants the restrictions on the death penalty to be removed so the state can execute people easily

    It’s because he wants the “undesirables” killed off where he can’t see it happening.

    Uranhjort ,

    Hmmm, yes, let us murder this child before he has a chance to murder us. This is what a society does.

    CoolSouthpaw ,

    Bruh, I’m just appealing to utilitarianism here. Also, remember that this child almost murdered an innocent teacher.

    Uranhjort ,

    Approx. 20.000 juveniles were arrested for murder or attempted murder in 2020 (per the US Dept of Justice) Shall we put them all down, as you say? Just to be safe?

    Calling your position utilitarianism is interesting, in what way is really, actually murdering a child (never mind the massive amount of legal, ethical and emotional complications that entail) to prevent a hypothetical future murder maximizing utility for anyone?

    CoolSouthpaw ,

    No, of course we shouldn’t put them all down. But extreme cases like this ought to be considered carefully, and if the risk is high, we should remove these individuals from society.

    To your second point, this child already almost killed someone and then bragged about it, showing no remorse. There is a very good chance he will grow up to try and commit murder again; he’s too far gone. That’s where the utility maximisation comes in.

    And re: your point about there being a great deal of legal, ethical, and emotional complications for this kind of policy intervention, I completely agree. Good thing we’re just talking shit on Lemmy, right? 😂

    the_lennard ,
    @the_lennard@feddit.de avatar

    What brain-dead form of utilitarianism is that supposed to be? The “I’m-16-and-on-a-wikipedia-bender”-kind?

    We don’t hold 6-year-old children accountable for very much in a legal sense, because they are essentially animals able to (barely) speak. Thats why we instead regulate gun-ownership, so that no child has access to firearms. And if that doesn’t seem to do the trick yet, I’d suggest regulating more comprehensively and holding parents accountable, so that it is very much in their own interest to keep guns from kids. We might also fund social services and schools to the extent that children are able to adequatley learn how to control their emotions and verbalise anger, unhapiness in a non-ciolent way, even if their parents are a bunch of irresponsible idiots.

    That seem much preferable to executing a six year old every once in a while to be save.

    CoolSouthpaw ,

    That’s just utilitarianism taken to its logical conclusion, is it not? Don’t hate the player, hate the game lol.

    And I agree that all of those interventions are preferable to capital punishment for juveniles. But in extreme cases where they are too far gone and are going to grow up to become killers, surely there is more we can do? Cos atm, we just let that happen and innocent people die.

    Blinx615 ,

    Age 6 was the time to intervene but the system is trash, bare minimum assistance provided generally makes things worse.
