some_guy , in California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs law to protect doctors who mail abortion pills to other states

The California Catholic Conference opposed the law, arguing the state is “engaging in ideological colonization against states and citizens that do not want abortion.”

Fucking bring it. California is one of the largest economies in the world. I’d like to see states like Louisiana and Alabama try to fuck with us. Texas might be able to go toe-to-toe, but they’re about the only abortion-banning state that’d even stand a chance.

I ended up being one of those people who needs more numbing than normal people, which is not the most pleasant thing to learn during your vasectomy.

That said, even after 4 separate breaks to apply more lidocaine, I had a super smooth experience and was pain free after the first day. Had to force myself to take it easy for a week, and didn’t even need ibuprofen. Getting kicked in the nuts is way worse.

Getting kicked in the nuts is way worse.

I know what you’re trying to say, but that’s not an especially high bar to hurdle. :)

kameecoding ,

do you have ADHD by any chance?

lidocaine is sometimes ineffective for people with ADHD.

I also found out lidocaine was ineffective for me while they were cutting out a birthmark

clockwork_octopus ,

Well, I’ll be damned. Also, if you’re a woman with adhd and are PMSing, apparently lidocaine has about a 25%effectiveness rate.

Wild.

kameecoding ,

yeah it was a wild experience, cuz I felt the blade cutting me, but I was like, surely just my mind playing games, then I started going into shock (according to the nurse) I was white and could-sweating so they upped the dose and still felt most of it, I usually felt pain at the dentist too, then I started mentioning that I have issues with the “standard” numbing agent because I forgot the name and since then going to the dentist is a breeze, get the stuff, get numb, stuff is done.

rustyj ,

This explains a lot. I’ve had dentists baffled that I could still feel anything during a procedure.

SheeEttin , in At US Antarctic base hit by harassment claims, workers are banned from buying alcohol at bars

Spoiler, it’s not going to change anything. People can still stockpile their rations and get trashed, or get other people, who aren’t going to use their rations, to buy for them. And 18 beers, three bottles of wine, or a bottle of liquor is still enough to get trashed on in a night.

And that doesn’t even touch the sexual assaults where alcohol isn’t involved.

birdcurtains , in US jail practices are racist and an 'affront to human dignity,' UN experts say

This just in: UN calls basketball referees racist due to their overwhelming calls against players of African American descent.

Wogi ,

Let’s say that there are roughly 3 times as many black players as white players. I have no idea what the actual percentages are, but for the sake of argument let’s say the NBA is 60% black, 20% Hispanic or Latino, 15% white, and the last 5% is everybody not already mentioned.

If all players are playing roughly equivalently, but 90% of the calls were made against just the white players, would you have a problem with that? What if 95% of the referees are black?

Let’s even throw a common racist counter point in there, and say that white players are more likely to commit a foul. Say each individual white player is 100% more likely to foul another player than his black teammates are. That would only account for 30% of the fouls and yet 90% of the calls are still made against white players.

Let’s go on to say that white players are penalized so heavily that for anything that could even appear to be a foul, whether it is or not, other players go to the referee and complain about their white teammates actions. Leading to even more calls against white players.

What if just having a white sounding name like Justin or Matt was enough to prevent you from even being considered for the NBA draft?

birdcurtains ,

It’s almost like they have these actual statistics on crime, but they don’t fit your narrative so they’re wrong right?

Wogi ,

Because unreported, unprosecuted crimes are always factored in, of course

birdcurtains , (edited )

You’re right, violent crime is typically goes under reported in black communities. Secondly some state agencies only report crime to the national agencies at around 50%. Overall 67(ish)% of agencies across the states reported. I’m also pretty sure its just resolved crimes/situations that are reportable.

Its fucked. It should be ringing alarm bells in everyones head noticing the multiple times gap between black and non-black murder offenders is now higher then the gap between men and women offenders. Even if it is skewed, its still people being murdered in communities that need the most.

Strawberry ,

this was never gonna convince the racist garbage you responded to because they didn’t arrive at their racism through reason. Their ‘misunderstanding’ of statistics is a post hoc justification for their racism. And any actual scientific analysis that disproves them would just be liberals twisting the simple statistics. As these things always go with fascists.

bobs_monkey , in Fast food workers to get a $20 minimum wage in CA

Here’s a (not so) funny anecdote: I went to Italy years ago and got McDonald’s equivalent of a double quarter pounder with cheese for shits and giggles. Dollar for euro, the price was about the same, if not a little cheaper, in Italy. Now couple that with the fact that Italians have access to healthcare, are paid a living wage, and have ample vacation pay.

These companies could pay their workers properly and provide benefits if they wanted to, they have the money. They don’t because fuck you

LetMeEatCake ,

But did you ever stop to think about how Italy’s system impacts the most important among us: the wealthy shareholders? A truly humane system would prioritize them at all costs.

Yeah when you think about how many meals they sell in an hour, they probably only need to charge less than 20 cents more for a meal to cover the cost of employees having a livable wage.

If were charging more for your burger in Italy, the difference in price was small enough to be unnoticeable. Because when you do the math, employees wages at a fast food joint isn’t a significant percentage of the price.

PunnyName , in Fast food workers to get a $20 minimum wage in CA

They’re making quite a lot of acquisitions, despite Bandcamp unionising earlier this year. It’s one of the biggest licencing companies in the world, so it probably won’t be great for the current services of Bandcamp when Songtradr wants to start monetising its users more meaningfully to make back the acquisition cost and break even.

Maybe good growth, maybe an attempt to gauge users as deep as possible before they just shutter the company. Could go either way.

He literally as spent years building up this conspiracy to the point that the parents of those poor dead children have been harassed for over a decade by crazys. I believe I heard that even one of the parents killed themselves over it.

He spent years spreading lies on his show that the victims of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting weren’t real and were part of some sort of conspiracy. He lost a civil case brought by the families of the murdered kids who suffered a ton of harassment by his fans. They were awarded a lot of money that he has so far weasled out of paying.

    mosiacmango , (edited )

The extra bits here are that they had data proving engagement went way, way up when they claimed it was a deep state conspiracy, so they leaned into it hard. This was done cynically, on purpose. They tortured these child murder victim familes for decades, for money.

The other part is that he lost by default, as he refused to turn over any legally required documents when sued. The only time you would ever opt to do that at trial is if the documents were far more damning than out and out losing. Judges dont like this, and neither do juries.

The third fun part? One of his lawyers legal aides accidentally sent a full capture of alex jones cellphone, with about 2 yrs of data on it, to the opposing council. Instead of making a legally binding request for opposing council to get rid of this accidental disclosure, he just asked him casually to discard it. Opposing council didn’t reply back, but did wait the legally required time in Texas before it became “fair game,” since alex jones lawyer didnt do his due diligence. A bit of dirty pool from the sandy hook laywer, but a monsterous fuck you to Alex jones that he deserved. His phone was turned over to both the feds for Jan 6th reasons and his ex wife.

My experience was pretty similar to yours. Really no pain and recovery wasn’t even that bad.

    teuast ,

Mine also didn’t really go beyond “uncomfortable.” I was moving pretty gingerly for about a week, but I started light running again after two weeks, easy road cycling after three, and was back to normal gravel biking after a month. Probably could have done earlier but didn’t want to push my luck.

One fun and one not-so-fun anecdote from that time:

    1. I’m a music teacher and was about to start directing a student show showcasing the music of Elton John at the time. The doctor had a radio on, and when he finished up and pronounced the procedure complete, Tiny Dancer was playing. Something something just got rid of my Tiny Dancers. That song holds a special place in my heart as a result.
    2. I got a lyft home from the procedure, and my driver had to stop at a gas station right after picking me up because she was pregnant and needed to pee. Apparently she had dropped out of college after finding out. I didn’t tell her what I had been at the hospital for, as that felt cruel.
