The cats at my parents home have a portion “RECEIVING PET” that is at least as big as the “SLEEP”, they will never get tired of pet and cuddles.

First-hand reports did not make mention of the origins of the perpetrators, only that they are of similar age (12 and 13yo) and one of them the ex-boyfriend of the victim. Very horrible, no question. But, is immigration relevant to this case ? Isn’t it more relevant to question why education of teenagers has failed so bad ? Why are racial and faith related aggression still a thing in a laïc state ? Why nothing concrete is being done to protect women ? Let’s avoid the essay short-cuts, and instead talk about the real root-causes.

It is very sad to see. RN party really doesn’t carry any values that are favorable to women in any way. They are very much fighting for blocking access to birth control and sex education. They have voted against proposal aiming to improve parity and reduce wage gapes.

@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

Official source are kinda hard to brows, but I could find this about the latest (16th) legislature:

It’s important to keep in mind that, without reading the details of the proposals, it’s hard to know the reasons for voting against. Often, a proposal with a title that seems to be progressiste is voted overwhelmingly against by the left groups, because the proposal is deemed flawed or insufficient, then many amendments are proposed and voted again, and again… It’s all very complicated to decipher. This small research also helped me to realize, what the news and media reporting about this in a more comprehensible way are often simplifying a lot and cherry-picking data to push a specific editorial line, and it is misleading more often than not.

RISC-V (pronounced risk five), is a Free open-source Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). Other well established ISA like x86, amd64 (Intel and AMD) and ARM, are proprietary and therefore, one must pay every expensive licenses to design and build a processor using these architectures. You don’t need to pay a license to build a RISC-V processor, you only need to follow the specifications. That doesn’t mean the CPU design is also free, no, they stay very much the closed property of the designer, but RISC-V represents non the less, a very big step towards more transparency and technology freedom.

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I admit it’s still a pretty complex explanation. I gave it my best shot :)

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

I know there are already a number of extensions specified in the specifications, such that Risc-V could be relevant to design the simplest of microcontroller up to the most powerful super computer. I suppose it is possible and allowed to design a CPU with proprietary extensions. What should prevent an ARM type of situation is the fact that so many use-cases are already covered by the open specifications. What is not there yet, to my knowledge, are things like graphics, video, neural-net acceleration.

HP tied thermal shutdown to Windows, meaning it doesn't work on Linux. (imgur.com)

My HP All-In-One 20-c081nt has the processor Intel Core i3-6100U, which is supposed to not run hotter than 100C. On Windows if 100C is reached, the screen will fade out and PC will immediately shutdown. A warning will be shown at next boot. On Linux, seen in the video, the PC will simply keep running as if nothing has happened...

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

You are saying, you are using your computer normally and it will reach temperature so high it needs to self-shutdown ? Either your laptop needs a good cleaning, maybe if it’s very old replacing the thermal past, or this is really a terrible design flaw.

Sorry, but Les Républicains are not “center-right”, they are definitely very-right, they campaign on the same topics than the extreme-right and share a lot of points in their programs.

The new Front Populaire regroups a fairly wide variety of parties, from the the far left revolutionary communists like NPA, radical left with PCF and LFI, until the center like Les Socialistes (social Democrats) and Ecologists. Last Sunday, they were divided and dragging each other in the mud, today they have 1) signed to campaign as one, 2) decided the candidates for each county, 3) agreed on a very detailed common program for the next 2~3 years.

The vote takes place on 30th of June, therefore the political landscape of France will continue to shift frenetically for the next 2 weeks at least.

It is surprising everyone, including left voters. I don’t think Macron considered this outcome seriously when he made his play to dismiss the national parliament. Most likely he was counting on the “Republican blockade” (it’s kind of a tradition at this point) to draw all the center to his cause (this would have included, Green, Socialists and the traditional right of Republicans).

Instead, Les Republicains instantly imploded when their leader Eric Ciotti declared we wants to ally with the RN (leading extreme-right party), he got unanimously banned from his party. Another extreme-right party, Reconquête also failed to rally to RN (this is another crazy story, mixing family relations and betrayal). And the left in the most broad sense, is as united as ever, in a unions that seems much more serious and solid than precious failed attempts, giving (my feeling) a lot of hope for voters attached to democracy and justice.

In a nutshell there are 3 possible outcomes we can summarize in Macron’s perspective:

  1. Republican blockage: Macron gets again majority in the assembly, he is reaffirmed as the legitimate leader of the country and he can continue the same government and policies. **Macron wins **
  2. Rassemblement National (RN) wins the parliament: Macron is the last standing defense against fascism in France, he will use his powers to veto and block the policies of RN, use this as an opportunity to display RN as incapable of governing, putting him and his party in a favorable position for the next presidential elections in 2027. Macron wins
  3. Le Partie Populaire wins the parliament: Macron cannot govern, he will use his powers to block the policies of the left, these measures are in large part about reversing the unpopular policies he passed in the passed 5 years (often without vote: 49-3), this will discredit him and his party. Macron looses

Do not expect this thing to be a daily driver. It’s aimed at developers who need a Risc-V testing platform. Very few Software will run on it unless you can spend hours making it compile for Risk-V and lets not talk about drivers. Also it will likely cost over $1000.

I am exited for the future of Risc-V in the consumer space, but we aren’t there yet.

I am joking of course. I am a privacy freak myself:

  1. All my computers run Linux
  2. I self-host all what I can and encrypt as much as I can by myself too
  3. On desktop, Mic and Cam are connected to a USB hub with individual switches such that they are powered ON only when I need them
  4. Laptop is a Framework 13 with HW switches for both Cam and Mic

There is something about the webcam switch on the Lenovo from work, that I like better than the Framework: The switch also physically blocks the camera. It makes me feel more safe and it’s actually much more intuitive to understand when it is disable. On Framework, the switch shows either red or black, but I never know what is enable and disable. Is it red for “Careful, it’s active !” or red for “Disable” ? (It’s Red=Disable, Black=Active).

Just install an alternative one from Play store or APK, and apply the requested change of settings.

@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, in the cas of Projectivity at least, when you launch Projectivity the first time it will ask you to change specific settings and it will take you to the corresponding menus. You just need to read the instructions and press OK. Sorry I can’t be more specific at this time, as I am away from my TV.

About the power of the hardware, you don’t need to worry too much. My NAS is a SBC with 6 ARM cores and 4GB or RAM. It run flawlessly all the services you’ve listed and more ! (Also, without transcoding for jellyfin).

I don’t know if your budget includes Hard disks, but it should be plenty enough to get you an ready made NAS from Synology or other brands, that will give you an easy start with self-hosting.

If you want to go the DIY route. Then I recommend to build yourself a small computer from a Intel N100 motherboard, or the older J5040. From there you can install Open Media Vault, or otherwise the Linux distribution you are the most familiar with, and install Docker. You can check Linuxserver.io for many guides for spinning up docker containers for all of the services you’ve listed.

Streaming services don’t support artists in any meaningful way.

Instead, buy music for download when it’s available (Bandcamp and the like).

If not possible, just pirate it and buy merchandise or go to a concert. You will bring as much revenue to the artists this way, than listening to them on Spotify for 200 years non stop, and it will be cheaper for you in the end.

Back in the days, you’re probably right. Nowadays? I wouldn’t connect online with Windows XP…

synapse1278 ,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

Good luck with software compatibility. The latest web-browser you can run on Windows XP is probably 10 years out of date by now and riddled with exploits, same with network share protocols, printer drives, etc. Your router will not protect you of attacs using port 443 or 80. Same for antivirus software, where are you going to find an updated one working on XP?

Sorry, can’t find the stuff I read about it a while back when I was interested about it, or was it a YouTube video?

Anyway, here is what I remember: having the radioactive fuel as a liquid makes it easier to leak, and once that’s happened, the environment damage will spread faster to ground water. Also sodium salt is liquid at high temperature, at which it will spontaneously catch fire in contact with oxygen (air), so any leak will cause a catastrophic fire, and this is what caused the demise of the French prototype “Projet Phénix” in the 70s.

GrapheneOS has an option to restart the phone after a given time without any successful unlock. I have it set to 8 hours, so it reboots every night. Shorter is possible.

A freshly restarted phone is in its safest state. Necessary to input the unlock code, strict minimum required processes running in the background.
