vivadanang , in Pandas could be gone from America's zoos by the end of next year

yeah kinda finding myself not caring… like… they won’t fuck to save their own species without pandaporn and veterinary handjobs… we have enough useless, lazy assholes in the GOP to take care of.

Grumpy ,

This is a false narrative people keep pushing in order to ignore the reason pandas became threatened. Their population decline has one and one reason only, that is: habitat loss. In other words, as usual, it’s human fault.

Pandas mate and pump out healthy babies perfectly fine in the wild. They only refuse to mate in captive environments filled with onlookers. This is a very common behavior among captive animals of many different species, not just pandas. Probably most humans too.

vivadanang ,

sorry, I should have specified, they won’t fuck in captivity and we don’t have their natural habitat to give them, so yeah, send 'em home.

randon31415 , (edited ) in Kevin McCarthy is ousted as House speaker in a historic vote pushed by conservatives

Anyone know who are the 5 most liberal republicans in the house are and if they want to just come over to the side that wants to govern?

Edit: According to a list I found online, those would be: -Fitzpatrick, Brian (PA-1) -Van Drew, Jeff (NJ-2) -Lawler, Mike (NY-17) -Chavez-DeRemer, Lori (OR-5) -Smith, Chris (NJ-4)

I’m never heard of any of them.

teruma ,

I’m never heard of any of them.

That’s probably a good thing Do you want any that you have heard of to be speaker?

frezik ,

As the current situation stands, I’d be suspicious of anyone who would willingly take the job.

ShaggySnacks ,

Interesting tidbit of information, in Britain the leaders of the Government and Opposition will drag who was ever voted as Speaker to the Speaker’s Chair.

It was the Speaker’s job to tell the Monarch what the House of Commons wanted. If the Monarch didn’t like what the Speaker said, no more Speaker.

Maybe the US needs to adopt that tradition.

Or go the way of the Wicker Man, just burn some random congress member to appease the Speakership God.

jesuiscequejesuis ,

Van Drew ran as a Democrat and then flipped parties after Trump’s impeachment. I wouldn’t trust him as far as you could throw him.

randon31415 ,

Must be why he had a high history of voting with democrats.

mojo , in Over 60 percent of Gen Z have an anxiety disorder

This is just straight up false

Fedizen ,

It might be this has always been the case

sfgifz ,

In a follow-up to our initial research, we surveyed nearly 1,000 Gen Zers who struggle with anxiety to ask them about what and who causes them to have anxious thoughts.

According to our research, more than 1 in 2 struggle with anxiety daily, and 1 in 3 are taking anxiety medication to try and find relief. But some are turning to other drugs or alcohol to cope.

The set of people surveyed are ones who claimed to suffer from anxiety. Every conclusion making claims on all Gen-Z after that is going to be flawed since the pool didn’t include non-anxious Z’s.

remotelove , in Pennsylvania inmates sue over 'tortuous conditions' of solitary confinement
@remotelove@lemmy.ca avatar

I was always thinking that a nerd like myself would be better off in solitary confinement if I ever went to prison. I am having second thoughts about that now.

SoylentBlake ,

You sit in a white room empty of everything but theres a slab to sleep on. One thin as fuck scratchy wool blanket. A sink/toilet combo. Maybe a cup that tastes like plastic, if yr lucky. That’s it. And the light never goes out.

You lose track of time as you have no basis besides meals (which is like a sack lunch with 2 pieces white bread dry and a piece of bologna. And a red delicious apple. I’ll starve, thanks) which are by no means at a set time. You lose track of everything.

It’s inhumane. It’s contempably cruel. And the cruelty is the point. What little contact you get with the jailers, they make sure to to let you know they enjoy your suffering. There is no empathy inside. There is no respect. You’re a piece of meat, not a citizen.

If there’s a just god in any capacity, everyone who works in the prison system will burn in hell. All of them

Ghostalmedia , in Ford makes new offer in US labor dispute, GM furloughs more workers
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

GM: Kills CarPlay and Android Auto, and aggressively, stays away from the bargaining table, lays off striking workers.

Ford: Says they will continue to support infotainment options drivers want, stays at the bargaining table, and isn’t trying to put the screws to striking workers. Also, Ford’s EVs are nicer looking.

My next American vehicle will be a Ford. Fuck GM.

zackwithak ,

Feel like the key part of that sentence is “American” 👀

Bbbbbbbbbbb ,

Paddzr ,

Ford is going down the subscription route… therefore they can also fuck off. Polestar is looking more appealing than their Mustang ev…

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, Volvo / Polestar is one of the more interesting manufacturers these days. They’re pretty aggressively cutting over to EVs, they were an early adopters for Android Automotive, and their industrial design is pretty on point.

Also, bang for your buck, Volvo Polestar often opens more features and better build quality than their competitors.

mojo , in Shouting at children can be as damaging as physical or sexual abuse, study says

This is horrible to do, but I feel like this really downplays physical/sexual abuse.

Gloomy ,

How so? If the result is similar they are just different roots to the same outcome.

The main difference is that the resilience, or the ability of a child to cope with the abuse, may vary greatly between physical abuse, sexual abuse and psychological abuse (like what the article is talking about). So a single sexual abuse is much more likley to cause Trauma, then beeing yelled at once. But beeing yelled at for years? Beeing told that you are wortheles repeatedly? That is likley to cause a lot of harm, especially because it plants a sense of “not beeing good enoth” in you that can take a lot of work to overcome once grown up.

There is no need to rank diffent kinds of abuse against each other. We need to see them as equaly harmful for children and not trivialice them.

MaxVoltage ,
@MaxVoltage@lemmy.world avatar

frankly if my dad was in my life the whole time growing up saying those horrible things

i wouldnt of thought i was capable of being a rocket engineer and fuck myself

LillyPip ,

It doesn’t, really. I experienced psychological and sexual abuse as a child (but not physical). Both were equally bad. I had a good friend who got physical and emotional abuse, but not sexual. She said she preferred being hit by her father over the psychological shit she got from her mother, because it didn’t last as long or hurt as much.

All three are equally bad.

icanred , in Over 60 percent of Gen Z have an anxiety disorder

I know an excellent therapist. In her professional opinion, she feels that other therapists and psychiatrists rush to diagnose any patient who comes to them with any type of normal worry or anxiousness about a situation that any normal person would also be worried about. It sort of like physicians who over prescribe antibiotics just because the patient insists. Just slap a label on the person and have them keep coming back for the fee. So, I do not believe the numbers are real. I feel like 60% may be diagnosed, but the number for people with the actual condition is likely much smaller.

DrMango ,

I recently went to a therapist for a few sessions because I wanted to talk through some major life changes with an unbiased third party. I have no diagnosed anxiety disorders, but I was told in our earlier meetings that he was going to “diagnose” me with something like “adjustment reaction with anxiety” (or put another way “difficulty working through change”) so that he could continue to see me. This isn’t the serious anxiety disorder that many people struggle with, but would almost certainly be lumped in to the category of “anxiety disorders.” This was apparently done mostly for paperwork reasons; I imagine somewhere on the backend someone might be asking why he’s providing therapy to someone who “doesn’t need therapy” without something entered in.

I still don’t have an anxiety disorder, but that diagnosis is going to be on my chart forever unless I go through a lengthy process to purge it. I’m not saying this is the way every doctor will do things, but it might explain some of the increased prevalence of “disorders” in the population.

    I’ve been in Kaiser for years, and even though my wife has worked for PPO insurers, and head up chronic care solutions for a large one, she is on my Kaiser HMO plan. The cost for care is simply much much cheaper going through Kaiser.

    The overall organization is not-for-profit, and physicians are on salary, and that shows when the bill comes. That said, they’re pretty notorious for struggling with the lack of physicians and therapists in the US.

    IMHO, I’ve got a lot of issues with Kaiser, but when it works, it works really well. When I needed major surgery they let me get multiple opinions with multiple surgeons at different hospitals, and I picked the surgeon that felt had the best plan and track record. Then they made sure to set me up with long term care with a PT, nutritionist, specialist in my condition, etc. That plus a week in the hospital cost me $50 or something. Maybe $75 with drugs. No way my company’s equivalent PPO plan would’ve done that.
