This is awful.

They are not, that was a Tiawanese ship, Maersk is a Dutch Danish company

RunawayFixer ,

Nope, that was the ship Ever Given from the company Evergreen, this accident is with a ship from Maersk.

they lied about their age… the corporation’s HR dept really screwed the pooch but it’s probably difficult to perform background checks on people who are illegally entering the country.

TokenBoomer ,

Let the free market decide.

Tilgare ,

Well to work with heavy machinery, you have to be 18. You’ve clearly never met a 14 year old, but 4 years and puberty at that age make a BIG difference. These children were very obviously, well, children.

Leviathan ,

I’ve seen people over 18 work on heavy machinery who I wouldn’t consider mature enough to do so. The older you get the more you cringe when you see someone work and know they’re gonna get hurt before they have a chance to live.

prole ,

it’s probably difficult to perform background checks on people who are illegally entering the country.

So the default is to just hire a literal child and hope for the best? Do you not see how stupid that is.

FlyingSquid ,

You think it’s hard to tell a 14-year-old from an adult? Really?

librecat , in NY judge issues gag order on Trump in hush money trial
@librecat@lemmy.basedcount.com avatar

I don’t like Trump, but gag orders shouldn’t be a thing either.

orbitz ,

Sure just let Trump commit stoic terrorism in hopes everyone is scared to cross him rather than gag him because he ALWAYS does it. That seems like a great way to make sure justice is done.

Chef ,

I have to disagree, especially in this case.

Forget the fact that his public statements can cause real damage to the targets of his accusations.

The gag order is called for if only to ensure he receives a fair trial with an outcome determined by an untainted jury. Whether he is trying to or not, every public statement potentially removes jurors from the pool by having them create a predetermined opinion on the defendant and the case.

This is literally a case where the judge needs to “protect the defendant from himself” as well as protect the proceedings from a mistrial or future appeals.

pmmeyourtits ,

Help me understand your perspective.

My perspective is, when Trump tweets/truthsocials anyone’s name in a court case about him, said person and person’s family receive death threats, bomb threats and other forms of intimidation.

So for this I see gag orders as important when used for good.

Providing two sources for sauce. rollingstone.com/…/judge-engoron-staff-death-thre…washingtonpost.com/…/bomb-threat-judge-ny-fraud-t…

JoBo ,

This is a semantic objection which completely ignores context and scope.

The ‘gag order’ bars Trump from using his platform to intimidate witnesses and employees of the court.

    I assume anyone who says ‘both sides!’ to anything involving Trump butter both sides of their toast and throw it on the floor before eating it, just to prove it always lands butter side down.

    verdantbanana ,
    @verdantbanana@lemmy.world avatar

    well both sides have worked together to make sure there is no other choices presented such as the fact that both corporate parties rig the board so other parties never get a chance to voice their vision for the US to the voters

    so yes it is both sides or nothing in the US and some of us are not even allowed to vote

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    At least it escaped from an ecological park where it will likely live out a normal ostrich lifespan. Based on the fact that the PetsMart in my under-100,000 population town has a large number of ostrich tracheae in stock, they must be heavily farmed.

    TIMMAY ,

    I just meant while it was running around in the city, I didnt read carefully enough about the recapture

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Sorry to confuse, I knew what you meant. I was saying it will probably have a less terrifying life than a lot of other ostriches. Which is good considering what it just went through.

    I assume the ostriches providing PetsMart dog treats are factory farmed. They probably live their whole lives under incredible stress.
