There is nothing to argue about, that opinion is spot-on.

Smeagol666 , in US prepares for bird flu pandemic with $176M Moderna vaccine deal

I guess they didn’t kill enough of us old/fat/sick fuckers with Covid, so they’re going to give it another go with fucking bird flu. How the fuck is Fauci not in prison? We are at the convergence of 1984, Brave New World, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Lord of the Flies. These stories were supposed to be warnings, not instruction manuals.

Lord of the Flies? How?

Smeagol666 , (edited )

Lawlessness, or more specifically the idea of “might makes right”. They just convicted Trump of 34 counts of fraud. Will he go to jail? Probably not. Our Congresspeople have rewritten the laws to allow themselves to do insider trading to enrich themselves to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. There is a profession in this country called a “lobbyist”, which is just a professional bribery middleman. The Supreme Court (not wanting to be left out of the so called “side hustle” culture), just two days ago, deemed it legal for government officials to accept “gratuities”. I wish this was a fucking joke.

That’s certainly the case in the UK.

What’s the point in competition if they don’t actually compete?

bluGill , in John Deere lays off hundreds of employees, after a $10B profit year

That was last quarter. You don't have to be very good at economics to look at world crop supplies, the age of the current farming equipment fleet, and other such data and conclude this next year will be tough for ag companies like Deere.

Of course the above is nothing new - ag is a cyclical business, you see the above ever 5-10 years. Previous to the current CEO the last layoffs of this type of position was the mid 1980s - several other CEOs saw the same signs the current one does and were able to manage it without layoffs.

whyalone ,

Are you feeling sorry for a soulless company that they didn’t steal enough pay from the employees and now they need to fire people to improve their quarterly report?

bluGill ,

I'm strictly reporting facts. How you feel about them is your decision. Though I suspect you didn't read everything I wrote if you come to that conlusion.

We could be even more proactive by banning these disease incubators.

Sidhean ,

Has the time finally come to ban birds??

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Factory farming is a huge problem when it comes to influenza and other diseases spreading and mutating. It certainly doesn’t help that farmers are often not given protective equipment like gloves and masks, but even without that, factory farming animals is a huge problem when it comes to the spread of disease.

In this case, it’s farming chickens and turkeys (along with other less common birds) that is the problem with influenza in general since it usually begins in bird populations, but it’s already spread to cattle farms.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Eh. I’ll watch the gymnastics.

The floor show is always worth it.

Bahnd ,

Ill follow some of the track and field this time, I prefer watching the winter games. Curling has no right to be as intense as it appears on TV, its great.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’m not particularly excited. Giant waste of money to appease a known corrupt organization, that negatively impacts locals (displacing them for temporary construction that is generally not built to last and falls apart within a couple years).

If they just designated a single spot to hold the Olympics every time (different spot for winter/summer) I wouldn’t have as much of a problem with it.

There are bigger priorities in the world, bread and circuses don’t hold much sway right now. I do feel for the athletes who train for it, but it is frankly not the apocalypse if they don’t know who is better at a given sport.

Alexstarfire , in Banker Who Slugged Woman at NYC Pride Event Charged With Assault

Why is the person just identified as “banker?” Is that somehow relevant? Are bankers as rage filled as cops and I didn’t know about it?

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

He’s identified in the article. I think it makes more sense than putting his name in the headline. Nobody knows who “Jonathan whatever” is. We all know what a banker is
